Chapter 15 - The Knock Beneath the Floor

The Carter-Mercer home became a fortress.
Police installed new cameras, window sensors, reinforced locks, and motion detectors beneath the surrounding trees.
Grace wore a discreet tracking bracelet.
Daniel slept with a chair wedged beneath the bedroom door.
Emily did not sleep much at all.
No footage showed who entered the house to photograph her.
The security system had not failed.
It had recorded no intrusion.
That meant the person entered through a route no one knew existed.
Or someone already inside took the picture.
Natalie became the obvious suspect.
She was offended but allowed police to search her belongings.
They found nothing.
Daniel submitted his phone, clothing, and vehicle for examination.
Nothing connected him to the photograph.
Grace said David had not visited.
“Would you tell me if he did?” Emily asked.
Grace looked down.
“He says grown-ups make promises they cannot keep.”
“What promise did he ask you to keep?”
The child did not answer.
Emily did not force her.
Three days after the bridge fire, Linda requested an emergency meeting.
She claimed she knew why the message said one child for each heir.
Reyes brought Emily and Daniel to the secure medical facility.
Linda’s injuries had begun healing, but she appeared twenty years older than she had at Natalie’s wedding.
“The five embryos were not the beginning,” Linda said. “They were the second generation.”
“Explain,” Emily demanded.
“Helix Bridge created paired lines. One Mercer child and one Vale child in each generation.”
“Daniel and me.”
“Yes.”
“Grace and whom?”
Linda looked toward Daniel.
“That depends on which twin fathered her.”
“David probably did.”
“Then Grace is both lines combined.”
Emily understood why the archive recognized Grace’s hand.
“She is not one heir,” Linda said. “She is the first child who carries access rights from both families.”
“Which makes her the key.”
“Yes.”
“What does one child for each heir mean?”
“Vale planned redundancies. If Grace became unavailable, another combined child would be needed.”
“Samuel?”
“No. Samuel came from one of your embryos, but his father belongs to the Vale line.”
Emily frowned.
“Then he is Vale and Vale.”
“Correct.”
“Noah?”
“Mercer and Vale.”
“Who is his father?”
Linda looked at Daniel.
“Your father.”
Daniel recoiled.
“Malcolm died eight years before Noah was born.”
“His genetic material was stored.”
The horror of the program seemed endless.
“Lucy?” Emily asked.
“Mercer and Vale.”
“Which Mercer?”
Linda’s lips tightened.
“I do not know.”
“Then what are you hiding?”
“The phrase one child for each heir does not refer to the children you know.”
Linda leaned forward.
“It refers to replacements prepared for each of you.”
Silence filled the room.
“A replacement for Grace?” Emily asked.
“Yes.”
“Another child with the same parentage?”
“More than that. Evelyn attempted to produce genetic duplicates.”
“Clones?” Daniel whispered.
“Not exact clones. Near-identical embryos created through cellular reconstruction.”
Emily stood.
“How many?”
“Linda,” Reyes warned, “answer her.”
“Three were viable.”
“Where are they?”
“One died. One remained with Evelyn. One disappeared.”
“Who took the missing child?”
“Sarah.”
Emily turned toward the observation window.
Sarah had been recovering under police supervision. She was expected to give a formal statement that morning.
She had never arrived.
Detective Reyes checked her phone.
Sarah’s escort vehicle had been found abandoned beside the river.
The officers were unconscious but alive.
Sarah was gone.
A message waited on Emily’s phone.
It contained an audio file.
Sarah’s voice trembled through the speaker.
“Emily, I wanted to tell you before they found me. Grace is not the child I removed from the program. She has a sister.”
Grace had a sister.
A near-identical replacement.
“The other girl was raised under a different identity,” Sarah continued. “She was placed close to you so no one would search far.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Close to us?”
Linda closed her eyes.
She knew.
“Who?” Emily demanded.
Before Linda could answer, alarms sounded throughout the medical facility.
The lights failed.
Emergency locks slammed shut.
A nurse shouted from the corridor.
The observation window shattered inward.
Daniel pulled Emily to the floor.
Two armed figures entered through the smoke.
One wore a tactical mask.
The other carried no weapon.
It was Sarah.
She looked directly at Emily.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “They have Lucy.”
The masked figure removed his helmet.
David.
Daniel moved between him and Emily.
David did not raise his gun.
“I did not come for Grace,” he said.
“Then why are you here?” Daniel demanded.
“To stop Amelia.”
“You expect us to trust you?”
“No.”
David dropped a black case onto the table.
Inside was a portable biometric reader and a vial of blood.
The label displayed one name.
LUCY VALE-MERCER.
Emily stared at it.
“You found her?”
“I found where she was kept.”
“Where is she now?”
“With Amelia.”
“Why?”
“Because Amelia never opposed Helix. She wanted control of it.”
Sarah began crying.
“I spent years believing she was trying to destroy the program.”
“She was removing Evelyn,” David said. “Not the research.”
Linda looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because Amelia raised me.”
Grace’s father had been raised by Emily’s biological mother.
Every family line folded back into the same conspiracy.
David activated the biometric reader.
A map appeared.
One signal pulsed beneath the facility.
Another signal pulsed inside Emily and Daniel’s home.
Emily’s chest tightened.
“Grace is at home with Natalie.”
“That signal is not Grace,” David said.
“How do you know?”
“Grace’s bracelet was removed an hour ago.”
Emily reached for her phone.
The call to Natalie failed.
David enlarged the second signal.
It came from beneath the house.
Far beneath it.
“The tunnel,” Daniel said.
The route used to enter without triggering security.
Reyes ordered police units to the house.
David grabbed the black case.
“We need to reach Grace before Amelia opens the trust.”
“The trust requires Grace’s consent,” Emily said.
“Not if Amelia has the replacement.”
Emily thought of the near-identical child.
A girl with the same biological signature.
A child raised under another identity and placed nearby.
“Who is she?”
Linda finally answered.
“The replacement has lived with the Mercer family for seven years.”
Natalie was older than seven.
Grace was four.
Emily’s mind moved through everyone who had entered their lives.
Then she remembered the quiet little girl who visited Linda every summer.
The daughter of Linda’s housekeeper.
Maya.
Seven years old.
Gray eyes.
A crooked smile.
Emily had seen her at the wedding rehearsal.
Maya handed Grace a ribbon and whispered something that made both children laugh.
“Where is Maya?” Emily asked.
Linda stared at the floor.
David’s expression confirmed the truth.
At that moment, Emily’s phone received a video call from her own house.
She answered.
The screen showed the hidden space beneath the floor.
Grace sat beside Maya.
The girls looked almost identical except for their age difference.
Natalie lay unconscious behind them.
Amelia Vale stood beneath a single hanging light.
“Hello, Emily,” she said.
Maya placed her hand on a biometric scanner.
The Grace Trust began opening.
Emily felt Daniel’s hand close around hers.
Amelia smiled.
“You thought the archive belonged to Grace.”
The loading bar reached fifty percent.
“It never belonged to one child.”
Sarah whispered, “Turn it off.”
David raised his gun toward the phone, helpless against a distant screen.
The loading bar reached seventy percent.
Amelia continued.
“Grace is the lock.”
Maya looked into the camera with frightened gray eyes.
“But this child is the door.”
The screen displayed thousands of hidden files.
One folder opened automatically.
Its title was:
ACTIVE REPLACEMENTS.
Names began appearing.
Politicians.
Judges.
Doctors.
Company directors.
Military officers.
Then Daniel Mercer.
Emily Carter.
Natalie Mercer.
Detective Sofia Reyes.
Reyes stared at her own name.
“That is impossible.”
Her file opened.
A photograph showed two infants sleeping in side-by-side bassinets.
Both were labeled SOFIA.
The loading bar reached ninety-nine percent.
The lights returned.
A sound came from beneath the interview-room floor.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone became silent.
David pointed his gun downward.
Daniel moved Emily behind him.
The knocks came again.
A child’s voice called through the floor.
“Emily?”
It was Grace.
But Grace was still visible on the phone screen miles away.
The floor panel began lifting.
A small hand appeared through the darkness.
Around the child’s wrist was Grace’s tracking bracelet.
Emily stepped forward.
David caught her arm.
“Do not touch her.”
“Why?”
His face had gone completely pale.
“Because Grace does not have a scar on that hand.”
The child beneath the floor pushed the panel higher.
She looked exactly like Grace.
Same dark hair.
Same gray eyes.
Same frightened expression.
But a thin black number had been tattooed beneath her wrist.
G-2.
The video on Emily’s phone suddenly ended.
The trust completed its transfer.
Somewhere inside the facility, every locked door opened at once.
Footsteps echoed through the corridors.
Not one pair.
Dozens.
The little girl beneath the floor smiled.
May you like
Then she spoke in Amelia Vale’s voice.
“Welcome to the next generation.”
