Chapter 1 - Call the Police

The bouquet hit the hospital floor so hard that white roses scattered beneath the bed.
Emily Carter barely had time to lift her head before Linda Mercer crossed the room.
“You filthy liar!” Linda screamed. “You ruined my daughter’s wedding!”
Emily’s fingers tightened around the blanket covering her abdomen. She had been out of surgery for less than six hours. Every breath pulled at the stitches beneath the thick bandage, and the pain medication had left her mind slow and heavy.
“Linda, please,” Emily whispered. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You know exactly what you did.”
Linda’s face twisted with rage.
She lunged toward the bed.
Emily saw the raised hand but expected a slap.
Instead, Linda drove her palm directly into the fresh incision beneath the bandage.
Pain tore through Emily’s body.
She screamed.
The sound was raw enough to silence even Linda for half a second.
Warm blood spread beneath the dressing. A dark red stain surfaced through the white gauze and began widening across Emily’s hospital gown.
The heart monitor exploded into rapid alarms.
Linda stepped back, breathing hard.
“Stop faking it,” she snapped.
The door flew open.
Daniel Mercer charged into the room with such force that the handle struck the wall.
He took in the blood, Emily’s twisted expression, and his mother standing over the bed.
Something changed in his face.
Daniel grabbed Linda by both arms and tore her away from Emily.
“Touch her again,” he roared, shoving Linda backward, “and I’ll make sure you answer for it.”
Linda stumbled into a chair.
“You don’t understand,” she cried. “She destroyed everything!”
Two nurses sprinted into the room, followed by Dr. Aaron Wells.
One nurse forced Linda toward the wall while the other pressed a call button.
“Security to surgical recovery, Room 614,” she shouted. “Now!”
Dr. Wells pulled back Emily’s blanket. His expression hardened when he saw the blood-soaked dressing.
“Mrs. Carter, stay with me.”
Emily tried to answer, but another wave of pain seized her abdomen.
Daniel moved toward the bed.
“Emily?”
The doctor cut away the bandage.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Dr. Wells stared at the exposed incision.
Then he leaned closer.
His gloved fingers stopped beside a thin line of bruising that extended above the surgical wound.
His face changed.
Not with ordinary concern.
With recognition.
“Call the police,” he said.
Linda went still.
Daniel looked from the doctor to his mother.
“What happened?”
Dr. Wells did not answer immediately. He pressed gauze against the bleeding and turned toward the nurse.
“Prepare an operating room. Tell trauma surgery we may have internal hemorrhaging.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You said this wasn’t just an assault.”
The doctor finally met his eyes.
“The impact reopened part of the incision,” he said. “But the bleeding pattern started before your mother entered this room.”
Silence fell.
Linda’s pale face reflected in the dark hospital window.
Emily struggled to understand.
“That’s impossible,” Daniel said. “The surgery was successful.”
“The surgery may have been,” Dr. Wells replied carefully. “But someone interfered with her wound afterward.”
Linda suddenly moved toward the door.
The nurses blocked her.
“I need air,” she said.
“No,” Daniel answered.
The security officers arrived moments later.
One positioned himself outside the room while the other approached Linda.
“Ma’am, step away from the patient.”
Linda stared at Emily with a look that was no longer only hatred.
There was fear in it.
The doctor examined the wound again, then reached beneath the edge of the loosened dressing.
His forceps closed around something.
Slowly, he lifted a tiny clear fragment from inside the bandage.
It looked like a sliver of plastic no longer than a fingernail.
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?”
Dr. Wells placed it into a specimen container.
“I don’t know yet.”
Linda’s knees seemed to weaken.
Emily noticed.
So did Daniel.
“Mother,” he said quietly, “what did you do?”
Linda shook her head.
“This is all her fault.”
“What is?”
“The wedding. The photographs. Natalie disappearing. Everything.”
Emily’s vision blurred.
Natalie was Linda’s daughter and Daniel’s younger sister. Her wedding was supposed to have taken place that afternoon at the Mercer estate, almost forty miles from the hospital.
Emily had not attended.
She had been rushed into emergency surgery before dawn.
“What happened to Natalie?” Emily asked.
Linda looked at her as if the question itself were an insult.
“You sent the message.”
“What message?”
The security officer reached for Linda’s arm.
She jerked away.
“At eleven twenty this morning,” Linda said, “every guest received a video from your phone.”
Emily’s heartbeat climbed again.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“What video?”
Linda’s lips trembled.
“A video of Natalie confessing that the wedding was a lie.”
Emily felt the room tilt.
She had never seen such a video.
She had not touched her phone since the ambulance carried her from her house.
Daniel seemed to reach the same conclusion.
“Where is Emily’s phone?” he asked.
The nurse looked toward the bedside table.
“It was collected with her belongings.”
The drawer was empty.
The clear evidence bag containing Emily’s jewelry and clothing remained on the counter.
Her phone was gone.
Dr. Wells swore under his breath.
“Daniel,” Emily whispered.
He took her hand.
“I’m here.”
Her fingers were cold against his.
Before she could speak again, the monitor sounded another warning.
Dr. Wells looked at the screen.
“We are out of time. Take her down now.”
The nurses unlocked the bed and began rolling Emily toward the hall.
Daniel tried to follow.
The doctor stopped him.
“You need to stay here and speak to the police.”
“My wife is bleeding.”
“And whoever caused it may still be inside this hospital.”
Daniel looked toward Linda.
For the first time since entering the room, Linda appeared genuinely terrified.
Not of the police.
Not of Daniel.
She was staring at the tiny plastic fragment inside the specimen container.
Emily noticed the shape of her mouth as the bed moved past her.
Linda silently formed three words.
They found it.
Then the doors closed, carrying Emily back toward surgery.
Daniel stood in the blood-stained room while the police sirens approached outside.
He did not yet know that the plastic fragment had been hidden beneath Emily’s bandage to deliver a slow-acting drug into her bloodstream.
May you like
He did not know that Natalie’s missing wedding video had been recorded three months earlier.
And he did not know that the first person shown entering Emily’s recovery room after surgery had been wearing Daniel’s hospital visitor badge.
