Chapter 14 - The Price of Freedom

The police arrested Dr. Evelyn Voss.
Sarah survived the stab wound.
David escaped.
During the chaos following the archive transfer, he triggered the building’s fire suppression system and disappeared through an engineering tunnel beneath the river.
Grace remained with Emily under emergency protective custody.
Natalie was hospitalized for dehydration and a head injury.
Linda was transferred to a secure medical facility, where prosecutors began building cases for assault, fraud, kidnapping, illegal medical experimentation, and conspiracy.
Mercer Medical’s sale was suspended.
Vale Consortium denied all knowledge of Helix Bridge.
Its board claimed Amelia Vale had not held an official role in more than twenty years.
Yet Amelia controlled the company’s private network and had spoken as its unquestioned authority.
Then she disappeared from every system.
The Grace Trust became the most valuable encrypted archive in the world.
Emily could not access it.
Neither could Daniel.
The system required Grace’s living biometric consent.
A four-year-old child now held control over evidence capable of destroying companies, governments, hospitals, and hundreds of powerful families.
Detective Reyes placed the trust under court supervision without attempting to open it.
“Anyone who knows what she controls will come for her,” Reyes said.
“They already have,” Emily replied.
Grace sat on the hospital bed coloring a picture of three people beneath a red bridge.
One was Emily.
One was Grace.
The third had Daniel’s face.
Emily could not tell whether Grace meant Daniel or David.
Daniel remained several feet away.
Grace was affectionate with him but watched him carefully.
Whenever he entered unexpectedly, she asked, “Which one are you?”
He always answered, “The one who knocks.”
It became their private rule.
David never knocked.
Emily’s recovery progressed slowly.
The repeated surgeries left a long scar across her abdomen. Dr. Wells could not guarantee that she would ever carry a pregnancy.
The news devastated her less than she expected.
Biology had been used against her for too long.
Motherhood, she now understood, would be defined by choices made after the truth.
Still, Grace’s legal status remained uncertain.
Records identified three different families as her parents.
DNA confirmed Emily’s biological connection.
No reliable fatherhood record existed.
Daniel volunteered for testing.
The results were inconclusive because Daniel and David shared nearly identical DNA.
A deeper epigenetic analysis suggested David was more likely Grace’s biological father.
When Daniel received the report, he sat alone in the hospital chapel for two hours.
Emily found him beneath a stained-glass window.
“She loves him,” Daniel said.
“He raised her.”
“He also tried to kill you.”
“People can love someone dangerous.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that what you are doing with me?”
The question hurt.
“You were triggered once.”
“And I reached for a gun.”
“You stopped.”
“You stopped me.”
She sat beside him.
“I cannot promise I will never be afraid.”
“You should be.”
“But fear is not the only thing I feel.”
Daniel took her hand.
For the first time since the hospital attack, they allowed themselves to sit without discussing evidence, identities, or conspiracies.
It lasted less than five minutes.
Detective Reyes entered the chapel.
“We found Noah.”
Emily stood.
“Where?”
“A family in Maryland received him through a private adoption six years ago. He appears healthy. The parents claim they knew nothing about Helix.”
“How old is he?”
“Six.”
“Does he know about us?”
“No.”
“Lucy?”
“Still missing.”
“And Samuel?”
“Ethan Vale’s aircraft landed in Switzerland, but neither Ethan nor Samuel was aboard.”
“What about David?”
“No confirmed sightings.”
Reyes handed Emily a photograph.
A traffic camera captured a man leaving a bus station seventy miles away.
The image was blurred.
The man resembled Daniel.
A little boy walked beside him.
Samuel.
“David took him,” Daniel said.
“Possibly.”
On the back of the photograph was a message recovered from a secure Mercer Medical account.
ONE CHILD FOR EACH HEIR.
Emily read it twice.
“What does that mean?”
Reyes had no answer.
Natalie left the hospital two days later.
She moved into Emily and Daniel’s home under police protection.
Linda requested to see her.
Natalie refused.
“I spent my life believing she controlled everything,” she told Emily. “Now I think she was only the cruelest guard in a much larger prison.”
“Do you believe she tried to stop Vale?”
“Sometimes.”
“Do you forgive her?”
“No.”
Natalie’s answer came without hesitation.
“But I need her alive until we know where Lucy is.”
Linda agreed to cooperate in exchange for protective custody.
She provided names of doctors, lawyers, surrogate coordinators, and wealthy families connected to Helix.
Arrests began.
News outlets described it as an illegal fertility network.
Authorities concealed the behavioral conditioning, duplicate identities, and corporate succession plans.
The public knew enough to be horrified but not enough to understand the scale.
Weeks passed.
Grace began sleeping through the night.
She called Emily “Em” instead of “Mom.”
Emily did not pressure her.
One morning, Grace climbed into bed beside her and touched the surgical scar through Emily’s shirt.
“Did Daddy do that?”
Emily chose her words carefully.
“David made a bad choice because he was afraid.”
“Is he bad?”
“He has done bad things.”
“Will he come back?”
“I don’t know.”
Grace considered this.
“He promised he would.”
Emily’s blood ran cold.
“When?”
Grace looked toward the window.
“When the red bridge burns.”
That afternoon, police reported a fire at Rebecca Ellis’s Vermont house.
The red bridge had been set ablaze.
Inside the basement, investigators found a hidden chamber they had missed during the first search.
The walls contained hundreds of photographs.
Every image showed Emily, Daniel, Grace, and the other children.
At the center was a recent photograph.
Emily asleep at home three nights earlier.
Someone had entered despite police protection.
Beneath the photograph, David had written:
May you like
YOU OPENED THE TRUST.
NOW THEY KNOW GRACE IS THE KEY.
