Chapter 9 - The Lion Opens the Cage

Clara did not allow Adrian to enter the kitchen.
She stood behind the locked door while Daniel, Isabella, and Naomi waited in the delivery corridor.
“What do you want?” Clara called.
“To speak without doors between us.”
“That is not happening.”
“Daniel has spent four years lying to you.”
“So has everyone else.”
“I did not know he was alive.”
“Did you know the body in his grave belonged to Stephen Cole?”
“No.”
“Did you tell Isabella about the warehouse?”
“Yes.”
“Did you arrange Vincent’s death certificate?”
Adrian did not answer immediately.
“I arranged it under Vincent’s instructions.”
Daniel whispered, “He is admitting it.”
Clara raised her voice.
“Why?”
“Vincent believed someone within the estate planned to kill him. Declaring him dead removed his legal access to the trust and made him useless as a target.”
“Where is he?”
“I do not know.”
“Do you expect me to believe that?”
“No. But it is true.”
Clara looked at Daniel.
He shook his head.
Adrian continued.
“Daniel brought a drive containing partial evidence. He wants you to believe he returned to expose the theft.”
“What does he actually want?”
“The black lion card.”
Daniel moved closer to the door.
“Adrian wants it.”
Adrian heard him.
“Tell her why Leo was added to Northstar, Daniel.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Clara turned toward him.
“You already told me.”
“I told you what I knew then.”
“Then?”
“I did not know Vincent had changed the beneficiary rules.”
“When did you learn?”
“Two years ago.”
Clara felt anger rising again.
“What changed?”
Daniel looked at Isabella.
“The trust does not automatically pass to the youngest descendant. It passes to the descendant whose identity is confirmed by the black lion system.”
Naomi frowned.
“His voice.”
“Yes.”
Clara remembered the phone opening when it heard Leo’s childhood recording.
“Why Leo?”
“Because Vincent believed Evelyn North had chosen him.”
“Did she?”
Daniel looked down.
“I do not know.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To find out.”
The kitchen door shook as someone tested the lock.
Adrian spoke again.
“Clara, the final file is stored inside a private Northstar vault beneath the Moretti headquarters. The system requires the card and Leo’s voice.”
“You want me to take my son into a hidden vault?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I want you to leave New York with him before Daniel or Isabella can use him.”
Isabella stepped forward.
“That is convenient. Once Leo disappears, Adrian becomes acting trustee.”
Adrian replied through the door.
“If I wanted control, I would not have transferred the restaurant to Clara.”
“You transferred one restaurant to obtain access to the beneficiary.”
Daniel looked at Clara.
“We have to leave.”
“Where?”
“The Northstar vault.”
“You just heard him say it requires Leo.”
“We do not need to bring Leo. I recorded enough of his voice years ago.”
Clara recoiled.
“You recorded our child without telling me?”
“For security.”
“No. For access.”
Daniel’s silence answered her.
The deepest betrayal was not that he had disappeared.
It was that even now, after returning from the dead, he was still treating Leo like a key.
Clara stepped away from him.
“You are not going near my son.”
“Clara, listen.”
“No.”
“If Evelyn left a message, it could explain everything.”
“Then it can remain unexplained.”
“People will continue coming after him.”
“They are coming because all of you keep trying to open the same door.”
The kitchen lock clicked.
Someone on the other side had an override key.
Naomi pointed toward the delivery exit.
Clara made her decision.
“Isabella, take Daniel’s drive.”
Daniel objected.
Clara took it from him herself and handed it to Isabella.
“Send copies to the police, federal investigators, every newspaper, and every employee attorney.”
Isabella accepted it.
“What about the trust?”
“We expose the theft first.”
“And the Moretti board?”
“They can explain their accounts in public.”
The kitchen door opened.
Adrian entered alone, holding both hands where they could see them.
“No security,” he said.
Clara looked beyond him.
The dining room was empty.
“Where are your men?”
“Outside.”
Daniel moved toward Adrian.
“You had no right to issue Vincent’s death certificate.”
“I followed his order.”
“You always do.”
“No,” Adrian said. “I stopped following his orders four years ago, when he told me to let Clara believe you were dead.”
Clara looked between them.
“You knew?”
Adrian faced her.
“Vincent told me after the funeral. I wanted to tell you. Daniel refused.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“It was not safe.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“You watched her lose everything while you lived under Northstar protection.”
“I was gathering evidence.”
“You were searching for Evelyn.”
“Because she is alive.”
Isabella froze.
“You said you met her.”
“I did.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
Clara’s breath caught.
“Where?”
“Bangkok.”
“What did she say?”
Daniel looked at her.
“She told me to bring Leo.”
Clara moved so quickly that Adrian caught her arm before she reached Daniel.
“Let go of me.”
Adrian released her.
Daniel backed away.
“I did not bring him.”
“But you considered it.”
“I needed answers.”
“He is your son.”
“That is why I came back.”
“No. You came back because you need his voice.”
Daniel’s face collapsed beneath the truth.
Clara took the black lion card from her pocket.
Everyone watched it.
Then she placed it on the stainless-steel counter.
“You all believe this card gives you something.”
No one answered.
“It gave Marcus a reason to steal from me. It gave Vincent a reason to test me. It gave Daniel a reason to return. It gave the Moretti family a reason to fight over Leo.”
She picked up a heavy kitchen knife.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Clara, do not.”
She placed the card against the cutting board and brought the handle down against it.
The metal card did not bend.
A thin green light appeared along its edge.
The black lion’s eyes illuminated.
A voice came from the card.
“Beneficiary confirmed.”
Everyone became still.
Then the restaurant’s lights went out.
A low mechanical sound came from beneath the floor.
Table 17 began to move.
The entire table lowered several inches, revealing a metal compartment hidden underneath.
Inside was a second card.
This one was white.
Clara picked it up.
One side held the Northstar compass.
The other contained a message.
The black lion chooses the guardian.
The white lion belongs to the heir.
Adrian looked toward the windows.
Every black security vehicle outside had gone dark.
His phone lost signal.
Isabella tried the doors.
They were locked.
Then the restaurant speakers activated.
Vincent Moretti’s voice filled the room.
“Clara, if you have found the white card, someone has already betrayed you.”
The recording paused.
“Do not take Leo to the Northstar vault.”
Daniel whispered, “Why?”
Vincent’s voice continued.
“The vault was never built to protect the inheritance.”
May you like
A door opened somewhere beneath them.
“It was built to keep Evelyn North inside.”
