THE BLACK LION CARD / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Husband Who Returned Too Late

For four years, Clara had imagined seeing Daniel again.

In some dreams, he entered their apartment carrying groceries and acted as though he had only been gone for an hour.

In others, Clara found him waiting at a train station, unable to explain why he had missed so many birthdays.

None of those dreams prepared her for the anger.

She crossed the dining room and struck him across the face with an open hand.

The sound echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Daniel did not move.

Clara’s hand stung.

“You let me bury someone else.”

“Yes.”

“You let Leo believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched us lose our home.”

“I know.”

“You do not know.”

Her voice broke despite her effort to control it.

“You do not know what he asked me every night. You do not know how many times he waited by the window because he thought you might come back. You do not know what it was like to choose between rent and his medicine.”

Daniel’s eyes filled, but Clara felt no comfort from it.

“I tried to send money.”

“Someone stopped it.”

“Vincent?”

“No.”

“Adrian?”

Daniel looked toward the front entrance.

“We cannot stay here.”

Isabella stepped between him and the door.

“You are not leaving until you tell us what happened.”

Daniel’s expression hardened when he saw her.

“You brought her here?”

“She arrived before you,” Clara said.

“Then we are already in danger.”

Naomi locked the service door.

“Perhaps everyone should stop speaking in riddles.”

Daniel removed his cap.

He looked older. A thin scar crossed his jaw. His hair was shorter, and exhaustion had settled around his eyes.

But he was Daniel.

Clara hated that her body recognized him before her mind accepted him.

“Start with the grave,” she said.

Daniel sat at Table 17.

“The night before the accident, Stephen Cole contacted me. He had evidence connecting Marcus’s wage theft to Northstar accounts.”

“Why was he in your truck?”

“He was not supposed to be. We were attacked at the construction site.”

“By whom?”

“I never saw their faces.”

“Stephen died?”

Daniel nodded.

“I was injured. Vincent’s security team found me before police arrived.”

“And they put Stephen’s body in your place?”

“Vincent ordered it.”

“Why?”

“Because the people searching for the audit file needed to believe I was dead.”

“What about me and Leo?”

Daniel looked down.

“I thought the danger would end if I disappeared.”

“You were wrong.”

“Yes.”

“Where did you go?”

“Argentina first. Then Portugal. Then Canada.”

“You could not make one phone call?”

“Every message to you was intercepted.”

“You could have come home.”

“If I came home, they would take Leo.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at Isabella.

“Evelyn North.”

Isabella shook her head.

“No one has proven she is alive.”

“She is alive.”

“How do you know?”

“I met her.”

Clara sat opposite him.

“Who is she?”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Clara.

“Your mother.”

The room became silent.

Clara almost laughed because the statement was too impossible to deserve fear.

“My mother’s name was Helen Bennett.”

“The woman who raised you was Helen Bennett.”

“She was my mother.”

“She loved you. But she did not give birth to you.”

Clara stood.

“No.”

“Clara.”

“My mother died when I was seventeen. Do not use her to explain your lies.”

Daniel reached into his coat and removed a photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a newborn outside a hospital.

The woman had Clara’s eyes.

On the back, someone had written Evelyn and Clara, 1991.

Clara stared at the date.

She had been told she was born in 1994.

“This is fake.”

“It is not.”

“Then why does every legal record show another year?”

“Northstar changed them.”

“Why?”

“To hide you from the Moretti family.”

Isabella took the photograph.

“Evelyn North was the original trust beneficiary.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“And Clara is her daughter.”

“Yes.”

Naomi looked toward the black lion card on the table.

“Then the card identifies Clara’s ownership.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not Clara’s.”

He looked at her.

“Leo’s.”

Clara tried to follow the pieces.

“If my mother owned Northstar, why would Leo be the beneficiary instead of me?”

“Because Evelyn was declared dead before you turned eighteen. Under the original trust rules, ownership passed to the youngest living direct descendant after the next child was born.”

“Leo.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Vincent control the company?”

“He never controlled it legally. The Moretti board acted as custodians while searching for the beneficiary.”

Isabella’s voice turned cold.

“My family built that company.”

“Your family expanded assets owned by the trust.”

“And you expect us to surrender everything to a seven-year-old?”

Daniel looked at her.

“That is why people died.”

Isabella stepped back as though he had accused her personally.

Clara looked at Daniel.

“Where is Vincent?”

“I do not know.”

“You were found near his car.”

“That was Nolan Reed.”

“He used your identity.”

“Vincent gave it to him.”

“Why?”

“To move through restricted Moretti properties.”

“Did Vincent fake his death?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I think someone faked it for him.”

“Adrian?”

“Possibly.”

Clara removed Daniel’s warning photograph from her coat and placed it on the table.

“You wrote this.”

Daniel read the message.

His expression changed.

“I wrote the first line.”

Clara pointed to the warning beneath it.

“Do not let Adrian Vale open the final file.”

“I did not write that.”

“Then who did?”

Daniel turned the photograph over and examined the ink.

“Vincent.”

“How can you know?”

“He always crossed the letter A like that.”

Clara thought of the video.

“Daniel, your final recording showed Adrian’s hand.”

“No. It showed his ring.”

“What is the difference?”

“Adrian lost that ring three years before the recording was made.”

Isabella stared at him.

“Who had it?”

Daniel’s face became pale.

“My brother.”

Clara had never heard him mention a brother.

“What is his name?”

“Julian Reed.”

“Nolan Reed?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Nolan is our cousin.”

The connections multiplied faster than Clara could understand.

Daniel took out a small drive.

“This contains the payroll transfers, trust documents, and security communications. Enough to expose Marcus and several Moretti executives.”

“Is it the final file?”

“No.”

“Where is that?”

“I never had it.”

“Then who does?”

“Vincent.”

A black vehicle stopped outside the restaurant.

Daniel stood immediately.

“Turn off the lights.”

Clara did.

Several figures approached the entrance.

One of them used a key.

Isabella whispered, “Only executive security has that key.”

Daniel took Clara’s hand.

They moved toward the kitchen.

Naomi led them through the wine storage room to a delivery corridor.

Before they reached the exit, the dining-room lights switched on.

Adrian’s voice came through the restaurant.

“Clara, I know Daniel is with you.”

Daniel stopped.

Adrian continued.

“You need to understand that he did not return to protect Leo.”

Clara looked at Daniel.

May you like

Adrian’s next words traveled through the empty restaurant.

“He returned because Leo is the only person who can open Vincent’s final file.”
