THE BLACK LION CARD / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - The Woman Beneath the Moretti Tower

Federal investigators raided Moretti headquarters the following morning.

Isabella had transmitted Daniel’s drive before the restaurant’s signal disappeared. Copies reached prosecutors, employee attorneys, and three newspapers at the same time.

The evidence exposed years of organized wage theft across twenty-seven properties.

Marcus DeLuca had kept only a fraction of the stolen money. Most had been transferred through shell companies controlled by senior Moretti executives.

Nine people were arrested within two days.

Three board members resigned.

Thousands of workers received notices that their payroll histories would be reviewed and repaid with interest.

Moretti’s Crown remained under Clara’s control.

She removed the manager’s private dining room and converted it into an employee legal office. She gave staff representatives access to financial records and established a profit-sharing plan that could not be changed without a worker vote.

For the employees, the victory was real.

For Clara, it was incomplete.

Vincent remained missing.

Adrian admitted helping him create the false death declaration but insisted he did not know where Vincent had gone afterward.

Daniel remained under federal supervision while investigators examined his involvement in the fake accident, the false burial, and Northstar Trust.

Clara refused to see him again.

She allowed him to write a letter to Leo but did not deliver it.

Not yet.

A father could not disappear for four years and return expecting a child’s forgiveness simply because the world had become dangerous.

Clara moved Leo back to their apartment.

Security officers remained outside, but she wanted him near his school, Mrs. Alvarez, and the ordinary life others kept trying to steal from him.

On Sunday morning, Leo sat at the kitchen table eating cereal.

Clara placed the white card beside her coffee.

Leo pointed at it.

“Is that the restaurant card?”

“No.”

“Can it buy things?”

“I do not think so.”

“Then it is not a very good card.”

Clara smiled.

“You may be right.”

He picked it up before she could stop him.

The Northstar compass glowed beneath his fingers.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“It is warm.”

A small line appeared across the card.

Then a map formed on its surface.

One point flashed beneath Moretti Tower in Lower Manhattan.

Clara took the card from him.

“Did you say anything?”

“No.”

“Did it ask for your voice?”

“No.”

The map disappeared.

Leo returned to his cereal.

“Dad used to have one.”

Clara stared at him.

“What?”

“A white card.”

“When did you see it?”

“When I was little.”

“You are little.”

“When I was more little.”

“Where?”

Leo thought carefully.

“In the room with the stars.”

Clara sat beside him.

“What room?”

“The room under the hotel.”

“Which hotel?”

“The lion hotel.”

“Who took you there?”

“Dad.”

Clara tried to keep her voice calm.

“When?”

“The day you were sleeping.”

A memory moved through her.

Leo’s birth.

The private maternity wing.

The hours she had been unconscious.

“Was anyone else there?”

Leo nodded.

“The birthday man.”

“Vincent?”

“I do not know his name.”

“Was there a woman?”

Leo’s spoon stopped halfway to his mouth.

“Yes.”

“What did she look like?”

“Like you.”

Clara’s skin turned cold.

“What did she say?”

Leo looked confused.

“She said I would forget.”

“You remembered.”

“Only in dreams.”

Clara contacted Adrian.

Within an hour, they stood inside the underground parking level of Moretti Tower.

Isabella joined them with a team of federal agents. Daniel remained excluded from the operation despite his repeated demands to participate.

The white card opened a service elevator not shown on the building plans.

The elevator descended forty-two floors beneath street level.

No one spoke during the descent.

When the doors opened, they faced a circular hallway lined with black stone. Seven metal doors surrounded a compass embedded in the floor.

The Northstar symbol.

Clara held the white card.

“Which door?”

Adrian pointed toward the map on the card.

“The north door.”

It opened before they reached it.

Beyond was a long room containing computers, storage cabinets, and shelves of paper records protected behind glass.

No guards waited inside.

No prisoners.

At the far end stood a hospital bed.

The sheets had been removed recently.

Medical equipment remained connected, its screens dark.

Isabella examined a cabinet.

“Medication was stored here.”

“For who?” Clara asked.

Adrian found a surveillance control panel.

Most recordings had been erased.

One file remained.

It was dated seven years earlier, the night Leo was born.

Clara pressed play.

The video showed the same underground room.

Vincent stood beside the hospital bed.

Daniel entered carrying newborn Leo.

Clara gripped the edge of the desk.

Daniel placed the baby in the arms of a woman sitting on the bed.

Her face was turned away from the camera.

Vincent said something, but the recording had no sound.

The woman touched Leo’s cheek.

Then she looked directly toward the security camera.

Clara stopped breathing.

The woman had her eyes, her nose, and the same small scar near the left side of her mouth.

Evelyn North.

Clara’s biological mother.

On the recording, Evelyn handed Daniel a white card.

The woman then pointed toward the door, ordering them to leave.

Daniel carried Leo out.

Vincent remained behind.

For several minutes, he argued with Evelyn.

Then the video jumped forward.

A man entered wearing a dark coat.

His face remained hidden.

He injected something into Vincent’s arm. Vincent collapsed into a chair.

The man approached Evelyn.

She did not resist.

They left the room together.

Adrian paused the image as the man turned toward the door.

A reflection appeared in the black glass of a cabinet.

Isabella stepped closer.

“That is impossible.”

Clara recognized the face.

It belonged to the man who had sat at Table 17.

Vincent Moretti.

Adrian replayed the final seconds.

The man reflected in the glass looked like Vincent, yet Vincent was still visible unconscious in the chair.

Two identical men occupied the room.

Isabella whispered, “Vincent had a brother.”

“No,” Adrian said. “He was an only child.”

Clara remembered the man using Daniel’s identity. False records. Replaced bodies. Stolen names.

“Perhaps the man we knew as Vincent was never Vincent.”

A printer activated at the side of the room.

One sheet emerged.

Clara removed it.

The document was new. The ink was still warm.

It contained a flight number, a departure time, and an airport in Bangkok.

Beneath it was a message.

Clara,

Evelyn is alive.

She has Leo’s original birth record.

Do not trust the man who returned claiming to be your husband.

Daniel Bennett died before Leo was born.

Clara read the final sentence again.

Behind her, the elevator doors closed.

The lights switched to red.

A live video appeared on the largest computer screen.

Daniel stood inside Clara’s apartment.

Mrs. Alvarez lay unconscious but breathing on the sofa.

Daniel held Leo by the shoulder.

Leo looked frightened but unharmed.

Daniel stared into the camera.

“I am sorry, Clara.”

He raised the original black lion card.

“But Evelyn said she would tell me who I really am only after I bring her the heir.”

The screen changed to a live image of a private jet waiting on a dark runway.

A woman stood beside the stairs.

She had Clara’s face.

Evelyn North looked into the camera as though she could see her daughter watching from beneath Manhattan.

Then she lifted a white card of her own.

The Northstar doors began locking one by one.

A voice sounded through the underground room.

“Guardian access revoked.”

Clara’s card turned black in her hand.

On the screen, Daniel pulled Leo toward the apartment door.

Adrian reached for the emergency controls.

Isabella called federal agents, but every line was dead.

Clara looked at the seven sealed doors and understood what Vincent’s final warning had meant.

The black lion had never chosen her to inherit the restaurant.

It had chosen her to decide whether Northstar should ever be opened.

And someone had just used Leo to open it from the other side.

The video feed flickered.

Before the screen went dark, Evelyn leaned toward the camera and spoke five silent words.

Clara could not hear them.

May you like

But she could read her mother’s lips.

You were never my daughter.
