Chapter 48 - The Original Owner

Eleanor Anne Vale was ninety-one years old.

She leaned on a silver cane but stood without assistance. Her existence explained why every descendant’s authorization had remained incomplete.

The trust did not belong to Rachel, Olivia, Miriam or Evelyn.

Not while Eleanor was alive.

Victor placed the source-key terminal before her.

“Authorize the transfer.”

Eleanor looked toward the camera transmitting her image to Rachel’s house.

“Is Rachel watching?”

“Yes.”

“Then let her hear this.”

Eleanor explained that Vale Urban Renewal had been created to rebuild damaged neighborhoods. Victor’s father transformed it into a property-acquisition scheme.

When Eleanor attempted to expose him, her death was fabricated and her daughters were separated.

She had spent decades moving between protected residences while James Bennett preserved the evidence.

“Why didn’t you stop Northline?” Rachel asked through the connection.

“Because I believed Celia could reform it.”

Celia lowered her eyes.

Eleanor continued.

“I made the same mistake every person in this family made. I trusted secrecy more than truth.”

Victor ordered her to authorize the trust.

Eleanor refused.

He reached for the terminal.

Marcus moved first, knocking the device away from him. Miriam pulled Eleanor behind the vault door as police entered through the private elevator.

Victor attempted to escape but found every exit locked.

Rachel activated the house system again.

Eleanor placed her hand on the terminal inside the vault.

ORIGINAL OWNER VERIFIED.

The contaminated files separated from the authentic records.

Property deeds, forged loans, manipulated inheritances and manufactured marriages began transmitting to courts, journalists and affected homeowners.

Victor watched his empire disappear line by line.

Before police removed him, he looked directly into Marcus’s transmitter.

“You think this ends with me?”

Marcus did not answer.

Victor smiled.

“Ask Rachel why her house was called Lot 46.”

The public release completed.

Then the screen displayed a map containing forty-five other numbered properties.

Every one of them was connected to another underground archive.
