Chapter 31 - The Third Name
The darkness lasted only three seconds.
Emergency lights came on beneath the flooded floor, casting a pale glow across House Zero. Rachel saw the family doctor standing beside the open pressure vault.
Dr. Adrian Cole looked older than she remembered. His hair had turned completely white, but his voice was unmistakable. It was the same voice that had calmly told Rachel her mother had died eleven years earlier.
In his hand was a narrow black cartridge removed from the center of the source-ledger system.
“Put it back,” Tessa ordered.
Cole stepped away from the vault.
“That device contains enough evidence to destroy thousands of legal titles,” he said. “It cannot remain here.”
“You pronounced my mother dead,” Rachel said.
“I signed the certificate.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
A second impact shook the archive entrance. Water spread around their ankles while the internal locks sealed one after another.
Miriam—the woman wearing the green ring—moved toward Cole.
“You were supposed to protect the girls.”
“I protected them for thirty years.”
“By delivering the ledger to Victor?”
Cole’s expression changed.
Olivia stared at Miriam. “You know him?”
Before Miriam could answer, Marcus opened his eyes beside the vault.
“The cartridge is not the ledger,” he whispered. “It’s the key that tells the archive who owns the truth.”
Cole raised the cartridge.
“And in less than two minutes, it will recognize only one owner.”
The damaged screen flickered back to life.
Rachel’s name appeared first.
Olivia’s appeared beneath it.
Then the third line slowly returned.
MIRIAM ANNE VALE.
Rachel turned toward the woman with the green ring.
Miriam did not deny the name.
Instead, she looked at Dr. Cole and said, “You told me that identity had been erased.”
Cole placed the cartridge inside his coat.
“It was,” he replied. “Until Rachel entered the house.”

Someone was waiting on the other side.
