Chapter 38 - What Evelyn Authorized
Rachel watched the video three times.
Her mother appeared calm. Victor sat across from her with a contract between them.
The recording ended before revealing the purpose of the agreement.
Miriam studied the image.
“Evelyn was being forced.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know my sister.”
“You thought she was dead for eleven years.”
Miriam had no answer.
Tessa sent the video to a forensic analyst. Initial inspection found no obvious editing, but the file’s final two minutes had been removed.
A second document provided the missing context.
Project Bennett had three stated objectives.
Create a legal dispute over Lot 46.
Force the concealed deed into public evidence.
Identify which daughter the house recognized.
Marcus had been selected because he was in debt, easily influenced and connected to Olivia.
“He was never supposed to win,” Miriam said. “The marriage was a trigger.”
Rachel felt sick.
Every humiliation Marcus had caused, every demand he had made and every document he had forged had begun inside a plan carrying her mother’s approval.
Tessa disagreed.
“The documents may show what Evelyn authorized. They do not prove she approved what Marcus eventually did.”
Rachel called the hospital.
Marcus was awake.
They found him handcuffed to a bed with an officer outside his room. When Rachel showed him the video, his expression revealed genuine surprise.
“Victor told me the operation came from Miriam.”
“Did you ever speak to my mother?”
“No.”
“Did Olivia?”
Marcus hesitated.
“One week before the wedding, Olivia met a woman at Cole’s clinic.”
“What woman?”
“She wouldn’t tell me. Afterward, she tried to cancel everything.”
Rachel remembered Olivia’s fear inside House Zero.
Marcus reached beneath his blanket and removed a plastic medical tag.
A nurse had placed it on his tray with breakfast.
Written inside was a message.
VICTOR HAS MOVED ROSE.
CELIA WILL CALL AT 9:00.
DO NOT ANSWER.
The clock above Marcus’s bed changed to 8:59.
