Chapter 7 - The Nurse Behind the Wall

The woman who stepped through the hidden panel wore gray scrubs beneath a maintenance jacket.
Rachel recognized her after several seconds.
“Nurse Patel?”
Mira Patel had cared for Rachel during the first night after surgery. She was the nurse who had asked Tyler to leave the room during a pain assessment. The nurse who had looked at Rachel’s bruises too carefully. The nurse whose name disappeared from the staffing board the following morning.
Mira closed the panel behind her.
“How did you get into my wall?”
“There’s an old service corridor connecting the nursery plumbing to the linen access. Your house was renovated from the original Vale model home. Diane found the plans online.”
Rachel stared at her.
“Diane knows you’re here?”
“She called the hospital after you stopped answering. I gave her my private number before security escorted me out.”
“Why were you escorted out?”
Mira looked toward the nursery camera.
“Is that active?”
Rachel nodded.
Mira took a small device from her pocket and pressed it beneath the camera. A blue light blinked.
“It will loop the last forty seconds.”
“You can do that?”
“My brother installs security systems.”
Mira knelt beside the rocking chair.
“Rachel, I need you to listen. The morning after your surgery, I found Dr. Rusk in your room. He was not listed as a consulting physician. He injected something into your IV port.”
Rachel’s arms tightened around Noah.
“What?”
“I stopped the infusion and sent the tubing to the lab. Before results came back, the sample vanished. My supervisor said Dr. Rusk had been authorized by your husband.”
“I never authorized him.”
“I know.”
Mira removed folded papers from beneath her jacket.
One was a copy of the handwritten discharge note Tyler had hidden.
Another was a medication administration record. Beside two sedative entries were initials that did not belong to any nurse on the floor.
Mira pointed to them.
“Those initials are Rusk’s. He entered the hospital using credentials from the Vale Foundation clinic.”
Rachel felt the floor shift beneath her, though she was sitting still.
“Can we call the police?”
“We can, but Tyler will say the medication was medically necessary. Rusk will say you consented. Vanessa will support them. They already have videos of you disoriented.”
“So what do we do?”
“We get you and Noah out.”
Rachel looked at the locked door.
“Tyler controls the gate.”
“The service corridor reaches the pool house. Diane is waiting two streets away.”
Hope came so suddenly it hurt.
Rachel stood, then doubled over as pain tore through her incision.
Mira caught her.
The bandage had begun to show a dark spot.
“You may have an infection.”
“I can walk.”
“You may not make it far.”
“I’m not staying.”
Mira opened the panel.
The passage beyond was narrow and dusty, framed by old pipes. Rachel wrapped Noah against her chest and followed. Every step pulled at the surgical wound.
They had reached the bend near the pool house when the lights came on.
Tyler’s voice echoed through the corridor.
“Rachel.”
She stopped.
A speaker had been mounted somewhere above them.
“You’re frightening the baby,” he continued.
Mira whispered, “Keep moving.”
The pool-house exit was twenty feet ahead.
A metal door slammed shut.
Locked.
Tyler’s voice returned.
“Come back inside and we can forget this happened.”
Rachel leaned against the wall, breathless.
“How did he know?”
Mira looked upward.
A small lens glinted between two pipes.
The corridor was monitored.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Mira pulled a wrench from her jacket.
Rachel shook her head. “No. He wants violence.”
“What choice do we have?”
Rachel looked down at Noah. His eyes were closed. One tiny hand rested beneath his chin, trusting her to know how to save him.
Then she remembered the spare key from her father’s compartment.
She tried it in the pool-house door.
It turned.
Fresh air struck her face.
Mira pushed the door open and they stumbled outside.
A car horn sounded beyond the side gate.
Diane.
Rachel took three steps across the patio.
Vanessa emerged from behind the outdoor kitchen.
She held a pistol.
“Give me the baby,” she said.
Mira moved in front of Rachel.
Vanessa aimed at her chest.
“I said give me the baby.”
Rachel’s mind became perfectly clear.
“You won’t shoot,” she said.
Vanessa’s lips curved. “You have no idea what I’ve already done.”
The side gate burst inward.
Max, the golden retriever, lunged through first, barking wildly. Diane followed with a length of broken fence board in both hands.
Vanessa turned.
Mira struck the pistol away with the wrench.
It skidded across the patio and fell into the pool.
For one second, escape was possible.
Then Tyler appeared at the kitchen door with two uniformed officers behind him.

He pointed at Rachel.
“She kidnapped my son,” he said.
