Chapter 14 - The Confession That Turned Against Them

At Haven West, Tyler heard Noah’s cry over the intercom and abandoned the camera.
“Where is he?” he demanded.
Vanessa looked genuinely confused.
“I left him at the house.”
“With whom?”
“That nurse followed me. Samuel said he would handle her.”
Tyler turned toward Samuel.
“You let Patel near him?”
“I moved Noah away from Rusk.”
Dr. Rusk’s face darkened. “The child was never in danger from me.”
Rachel laughed from the bed.
Every person in the room looked at her.
She was bleeding through her hospital gown. One wrist remained strapped down. Yet for the first time since entering the annex, she no longer looked frightened.
“You’re all losing track of your own lies.”
Tyler crossed the room.
Rachel continued.
“Vanessa thinks this is about her foundation. Rusk thinks it’s about protecting his license and money. Holloway thinks it’s a corporate transfer. Samuel thinks he can still save my father’s secret. You think you control them all.”
Tyler leaned close.
“I control what happens to you.”
“No. You controlled what each of us knew.”
She looked toward the camera.
Its red light was on.
Tyler followed her gaze.
The camera had begun streaming automatically when the intercom activated. The small monitor beside it showed a live connection to the hearing server Holloway had prepared.
Holloway lunged for the controls.
The screen displayed a participant count.
Twenty-eight.
The judge, court clerk, child-welfare attorneys, and remote observers had heard the argument.
They had heard Vanessa say she left Noah at the house.
They had heard Samuel admit moving him.
They had heard Rusk insist the child was safe from him.
They had heard Tyler ask where Noah was, proving he had not known the infant’s location while claiming lawful custody.
Holloway ripped the power cord from the wall.
The stream ended.
But the damage had been transmitted.
Sirens approached outside.
Real ones this time.
Vanessa raised her gun.
“We leave through the north tunnel.”
Rusk gathered medication from the cart.
Holloway opened the steel door.
Smoke rolled in from the parking bay.
Police shouted through loudspeakers.
Tyler unfastened Rachel’s wrist.
“Stand up.”
She did not move.
He pulled her from the bed.
Pain nearly dropped her to her knees, but she stayed upright.
Samuel moved between them.
“Let her go.”
Tyler struck him across the face with the leather folder.
Documents scattered.
One page slid beneath Rachel’s foot.
A birth certificate.
Not Noah’s.
Her own.
The mother listed was Clara Cole.
The father’s line was blank.
A second page was attached beneath it, a sealed genetic report comparing Rachel to Thomas Cole.
Probability of paternity: 0.00 percent.
Rachel looked at Samuel.
“What is this?”
Vanessa seized the papers.
“This is not the time.”
Rachel caught the corner and tore the report from her hand.
“My father wasn’t my father?”
Samuel wiped blood from his mouth.
“He was your father in every way that mattered.”
“Who was my biological father?”
The north corridor door opened.
Detective Reed appeared through the smoke with his weapon raised.
“Drop the gun!”
Vanessa fired.
Reed dove behind the frame. Officers returned fire. A bullet struck the ceiling, showering the room with concrete dust.
Rusk fled toward the treatment wing.
Holloway dropped to the floor.
Tyler wrapped one arm around Rachel’s throat and pressed a blade beneath her jaw.
“Back away!”
Reed aimed at him.
Rachel could feel Tyler’s heart hammering against her back.
Samuel stood near the tripod camera, hands raised.
Vanessa had been hit in the shoulder but remained on her feet, pistol hanging at her side.
“Tell her,” she said to Samuel.
Tyler shouted, “Shut up.”
Vanessa laughed breathlessly. “All this time, and she still doesn’t know why Thomas chose her.”
Rachel looked at Samuel.
He had protected the secret through fraud, betrayal, and the possible destruction of her life.
“Tell me.”
Samuel’s face collapsed.
“Your biological father was Adrian Vale.”
Eleanor’s husband.
Vanessa’s father.
Rachel stared at Vanessa.
Vanessa smiled through the pain.
“We’re sisters.”
The word struck harder than Tyler’s arm.
Suddenly Rachel understood the resemblance strangers occasionally noticed. Vanessa’s lifelong access to the Cole family. Eleanor’s involvement. The trust provision that placed the company under Samuel rather than a blood relative.
Tyler tightened his grip.
“None of it matters.”
Rachel looked at Reed.
Then she let her knees buckle.
Tyler’s blade lifted as he tried to hold her.
Reed fired.
The bullet struck Tyler’s shoulder.
Rachel fell free.
Officers rushed the room.
Vanessa disappeared through the north corridor during the confusion.
Samuel dropped beside Rachel and pressed both hands over her reopened incision.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
She looked at him.
“Where is my father?”
Samuel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Which one?”
Then the building’s emergency doors began to close.
A recorded voice announced that the lower level would seal in sixty seconds.
From somewhere deep beneath the annex came the sound of machinery starting.
Samuel went white.
“Rusk activated the disposal system.”
“What does it dispose of?” Reed asked.
May you like
Samuel looked toward the floor.
“Records,” he said. “And anyone still inside.”
