Chapter 12 - The Footage From Across the Street

While Rachel traveled west with Tyler, Diane sat in Mrs. Alvarez’s dining room watching the Mercer driveway from six different angles.

Mrs. Elena Alvarez was seventy-eight, widowed, and more observant than anyone on Willow Crest Lane understood. Her cameras covered her porch, mailbox, garden, side gate, and the broad curve of the street.

“I installed them after someone stole my ceramic goose,” she explained.

Diane would later believe that ceramic goose helped save two lives.

The footage began at 1:38 p.m., the day Diane smashed the sedan window.

Rachel’s black car entered the driveway and parked near the garage.

Four minutes later, Tyler’s luxury SUV arrived.

Tyler stepped out first.

Vanessa followed.

Then Samuel Cole emerged from the rear seat wearing a gray baseball cap.

Diane froze the image.

Samuel walked to Rachel’s driver-side door and opened it. Rachel was already in the seat, holding Noah.

There was no audio, but the confrontation was visible.

Rachel tried to get out.

Tyler pushed the door closed.

Vanessa opened the rear door, took Noah from Rachel, and strapped him into the car seat. Samuel stood near the hood, looking toward the street.

Then Tyler leaned into the driver’s side.

When he stepped back, he held Rachel’s phone.

Vanessa placed a grocery bag on the passenger seat.

Samuel walked to the garage, entered a code, and disappeared inside.

Three minutes later, he returned carrying a small black case.

Tyler closed Rachel’s door.

Vanessa closed the rear door.

Tyler pressed something on his phone.

The sedan’s lights flashed.

Locked.

The three of them entered the SUV and drove away.

Rachel moved inside the sedan, striking the window weakly.

Noah began to cry.

Mrs. Alvarez covered her mouth.

Diane felt rage settle into something colder.

“They knew.”

Her phone rang.

Detective Reed told her the tracker had stopped moving and the signal was likely compromised. He had units searching the last known area, but the roads divided through miles of private property.

Diane sent him the video.

Then she used Rachel’s key to open Thomas Cole’s storage unit.

Samuel’s office records listed the address under dormant estate assets. The unit stood in an industrial facility near the western county line, less than fifteen miles from the tracker’s last signal.

Inside were boxes of flight records, legal files, old computer drives, and a scale model of a Vale Foundation clinic.

Diane lifted the model’s roof.

Beneath it was a floor plan showing a subterranean level not present in public building records.

The label read Haven West Research Annex.

The same name appeared on an old property transfer signed by Eleanor Vale and witnessed by Samuel Cole.

Diane sent the location to Reed.

Then she found something else.

A portable receiver with a handwritten label.

NURSERY AUDIO, WILLOW CREST.

Thomas had known the house contained hidden passages and surveillance wiring before Tyler ever claimed to install the system. The Mercer house had been a Vale model home, used years earlier to demonstrate residential medical monitoring technology.

Diane powered on the receiver.

Static filled the unit.

Then a baby cried.

Noah was not at the abandoned clinic.

The signal originated from the house.

Diane called Reed again, but his units were already moving toward Haven West. She could not wait.

She drove back to Willow Crest, entered through the pool-house passage, and followed the sound behind the nursery wall.

There, inside a narrow surveillance room, she found Mira Patel sitting on the floor with Noah in her arms.

Mira’s temple was bleeding.

“What happened?”

“Vanessa brought him here after Tyler took him from the hospital,” Mira said. “I followed. Samuel let me into the house.”

“Samuel?”

“He said he was trying to keep the baby out of Rusk’s hands.”

Diane looked at Noah. “Then why is Samuel with them?”

“I don’t know. He kept changing his mind.”

On the floor beside Mira lay a black case containing copied trust documents, a satellite transmitter, and several audio files.

One file was labeled THOMAS COLE, FINAL STATEMENT.

Diane played the first thirty seconds.

Thomas Cole’s voice filled the small room.

If you are hearing this, Samuel has either kept his promise or broken it. Do not decide which until you know why.

Diane stopped the recording.

There was no time.

She needed to get Noah to safety and Rachel out of Haven West.

The satellite transmitter could send audio to receivers connected to the old annex network. Thomas had designed the system as a failsafe.

Mira found the annex frequency.

Diane held Noah near the microphone and activated the intercom.

His cry traveled through the hidden network.

Then Diane spoke.

“Come find us.”

It was a bluff.

They were still at Willow Crest.

But Tyler did not know that.

And if he believed Noah was somewhere inside the annex, he might separate from Rachel long enough for police to reach her.

Diane sent the annex plans to Reed.

A reply appeared seconds later.

UNITS THREE MINUTES OUT.

Then the nursery door opened.

Vanessa’s mother, Eleanor Vale, stepped into the room.

She was supposed to have died eight years earlier.
