Chapter 3 - the key that opened the nursery wall

Uncle Malcolm arrived before Gabriel could call him.

That alone was enough to make Detective Shaw suspicious.

His black sedan passed through the mansion gates just as the forensic team finished photographing the staircase.

Malcolm Mercer was sixty-seven, silver-haired, elegant, and famous for remaining calm during disasters.

He had rebuilt Mercer Holdings after Gabriel's father died.

He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without raising his voice.

And when Julia's coffin had been lowered into the ground, Malcolm had stood beside Gabriel and whispered that family would survive anything.

Now he walked into the foyer and removed his gloves.

"What happened?"

Gabriel did not answer.

Malcolm looked toward the stroller.

Then toward the police.

Then toward Caroline, who was still inside the study.

His expression sharpened.

"Gabriel?"

"How did you know something happened?"

Malcolm paused.

"Caroline called me."

Detective Shaw looked toward the study.

"Her phone was taken before she entered that room."

Malcolm's face did not change.

"Then one of the staff contacted me."

"No one did," Gabriel said.

Silence.

Malcolm looked at him.

"Are you accusing me of something?"

Gabriel removed Julia's photograph from his pocket.

"I don't know yet."

He handed it to Malcolm.

For the first time, the older man's composure cracked.

Only slightly.

But Gabriel saw it.

Malcolm stared at the photograph.

"Where did you get this?"

"Julia left it."

"Julia?"

"Why were you here?"

Malcolm looked at the picture again.

"I don't remember."

"It's dated five days before she died."

"I visited this house many times."

"You told me at her funeral you hadn't been here in a year."

Malcolm raised his eyes.

"Grief makes people say inaccurate things."

Detective Shaw spoke.

"Convenient."

Malcolm looked at her.

"Detective Shaw."

"You remember me."

"I remember everyone involved in my family's affairs."

Shaw held his gaze.

"I'm sure you do."

Gabriel took the photograph back.

Then he remembered the brass key.

He pulled it from his pocket.

Malcolm looked at it.

Again, something changed in his face.

Gabriel noticed immediately.

"You recognize it."

"No."

"You looked at it."

"People generally look at objects held in front of them."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"What does it open?"

Malcolm smiled.

"How would I know?"

Lily came down the staircase again.

This time nobody stopped her.

She looked at the brass key.

"That's Mom's nursery key."

Gabriel turned.

"What?"

Lily walked toward him.

"She used it behind Emma's closet."

Gabriel felt another chill.

"Behind the closet?"

Lily nodded.

"She told me not to tell Aunt Caroline."

Caroline's voice came from behind them.

"That little girl has always had an imagination."

Everyone turned.

An attorney had arrived.

Caroline stood beside him.

Detective Shaw had not arrested her.

Not yet.

The video showed suspicious behavior, but without proof that Caroline intentionally released the brake, her attorney was already arguing that she had simply touched the stroller while trying to stabilize it.

Gabriel hated the technicality.

But Shaw had told him quietly that rushing an arrest could weaken the case.

Caroline looked at Lily.

"Your mother filled your head with secrets."

Lily moved closer to Gabriel.

Gabriel's voice became cold.

"Do not talk to my daughter."

Caroline's attorney stepped between them.

"My client will be leaving."

Gabriel stared at Caroline.

"You are not staying in this house."

"I had no intention of doing so."

As she passed him, Caroline whispered, "You should burn whatever Julia left."

Gabriel said nothing.

Caroline stopped.

"She became obsessed near the end."

Gabriel looked at her.

"Obsessed with what?"

"With proving everyone wanted something from her."

"Did you?"

Caroline smiled.

Then she walked away.

Malcolm watched her leave.

Too carefully.

Gabriel noticed.

So did Detective Shaw.

They went upstairs.

Emma's nursery looked exactly as it had that morning.

Cream walls.

White crib.

Small stuffed animals.

A rocking chair near the window.

Julia had designed the room herself while she was pregnant.

Gabriel remembered her standing in the middle of it, laughing because he had assembled the crib backward.

The memory hurt.

Lily walked to the closet.

She pushed aside several baby dresses.

Then she pointed toward a small brass circle hidden behind the wooden frame.

Gabriel inserted Julia's key.

The lock turned.

A narrow section of wall opened inward.

Behind it was a space approximately three feet deep.

Not a room.

A compartment.

Inside were several folders.

A laptop.

A small digital recorder.

And a red leather notebook.

Detective Shaw put on gloves.

"Nobody touch anything."

Gabriel stared at the objects.

Julia had built a secret archive inside their baby's nursery.

How had he not known?

How many nights had he slept beside her while she carried this alone?

Shaw opened the first folder.

Bank statements.

The second contained copies of corporate documents.

The third contained photographs.

One showed Malcolm speaking to Caroline outside a hotel.

Another showed a man Gabriel did not recognize entering the underground parking structure beneath Mercer Holdings.

Another showed Gabriel's father, taken years earlier.

Gabriel frowned.

"My father?"

Shaw looked at the date.

"Twelve years ago."

Gabriel picked up the red notebook.

Shaw stopped him.

"Gloves."

She handed him a pair.

He opened the notebook.

Julia's handwriting filled page after page.

Dates.

Names.

Amounts.

Meetings.

At first, Gabriel could not understand the pattern.

Then he saw a phrase repeated several times.

Mercer Children's Trust.

Gabriel looked at Malcolm.

"What is this?"

Malcolm remained near the doorway.

"A trust your grandfather created."

"For what?"

"For future generations."

"Why didn't I know about it?"

"You did."

"No, I didn't."

"You signed documents after your father's death."

"I signed hundreds of documents."

Malcolm sighed.

"Gabriel, this is not the moment."

"It is exactly the moment."

Shaw continued reading.

Then she stopped.

"Mr. Mercer."

Gabriel turned.

She pointed to one entry in Julia's notebook.

Three months before her death.

Caroline asked again what happens if both children die before Gabriel takes full control.

The room became silent.

Gabriel read the sentence again.

Then the next one.

Malcolm says the trust reverts to the surviving Mercer bloodline.

His stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Malcolm's expression had gone flat.

Gabriel stepped toward him.

"What does that mean?"

Malcolm answered slowly.

"It means if you died without heirs, certain assets would return to the family trust."

"I'm alive."

"Exactly."

"And my children?"

Malcolm did not answer.

Gabriel looked down at Julia's notebook.

May you like

The next sentence was underlined twice.

If something happens to Lily or Emma, it will not be an accident.
