Chapter 1 - the fall that changed everything

The stroller was already halfway down the marble staircase when Gabriel Mercer heard the first scream.
It was not the baby's cry.
It was Nora Blake.
"Oh my God! The baby!"
Gabriel came running from the west corridor just as the gray stroller struck the final three steps, twisted sideways, and slammed against the polished marble floor.
Nora threw herself after it.
Her knees hit first.
Then her shoulder.
Then the side of her face.
She slid across the marble beside the stroller, one hand stretching toward the safety strap that held ten-month-old Emma Mercer inside.
The baby was screaming.
But she was alive.
Gabriel's heart stopped for what felt like several seconds.
Above them, Caroline Mercer stood on the staircase.
His younger sister wore a metallic gold dress and looked almost frozen beneath the chandelier.
Then she suddenly ran down.
"What have you done?"
Nora pushed herself onto one elbow.
"What?"
Caroline pointed at her.
"What have you done?"
Gabriel reached the stroller.
"What happened?"
Caroline answered before Nora could speak.
"She almost killed the baby!"
Nora's face went pale.
"No!"
Her hands trembled violently.
"I was trying to save her!"
Gabriel looked from Nora to Caroline.
His mind could barely process what he was seeing.
Emma screamed as Gabriel carefully removed her from the stroller.
He checked her head.
Her arms.
Her legs.
No blood.
No obvious injury.
He held her against his chest while Nora remained on the floor, breathing hard.
Caroline came closer.
"Gabriel, I saw her."
Nora stared at her.
"That is a lie."
"You left the stroller at the top of the stairs."
"No."
"You weren't paying attention."
"No!"
Nora tried to stand but collapsed against the bottom step.
Gabriel looked at her.
"Nora, tell me exactly what happened."
Nora swallowed.
"I was coming out of the nursery. The stroller was beside me. I turned around because I heard someone behind us."
Her eyes moved slowly toward Caroline.
"And then it started moving."
Caroline laughed nervously.
"Are you seriously blaming me?"
"I didn't say your name."
"You looked at me."
"Because you were there."
Caroline stepped toward her.
"You're trying to protect yourself."
Gabriel raised his voice.
"Enough."
The enormous foyer went silent.
Even the two house staff standing near the dining room doorway stopped moving.
Then a small voice came from behind Gabriel.
"Dad."
He turned.
His eight-year-old daughter Lily stood beside the fireplace.
She was barefoot.
Her dark brown hair was messy from sleep.
And she was holding a black smartphone in both hands.
Gabriel stared at her.
"Lily?"
The little girl looked frightened.
But there was something else in her expression.
Determination.
She walked toward him.
"Dad, I managed to record the whole thing."
Caroline's face changed.
Gabriel noticed it immediately.
It lasted less than a second.
A flash of panic.
Then it was gone.
"What are you talking about?" Caroline asked.
Lily ignored her.
She held the phone toward Gabriel.
"I was making a video for Grandma's birthday. I was recording the staircase because I wanted to show her the decorations."
Gabriel shifted Emma to his left arm and took the phone.
Lily had already paused the recording.
The image showed the upper section of the staircase.
The stroller was clearly visible.
So was Nora.
And behind the stroller stood Caroline.
Gabriel pressed play.
Nora was pushing the stroller across the upstairs landing.
She stopped beside the railing.
Then she walked approximately six feet away to pick up a baby blanket that had fallen near the nursery door.
Caroline appeared from the opposite hallway.
She looked toward Nora.
Then toward the stroller.
She stepped closer.
Gabriel leaned toward the phone.
Caroline's right hand disappeared behind the stroller handle.
A second later, the stroller moved.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
Nora turned.
The recording shook as Lily apparently gasped behind the camera.
Nora sprinted after the stroller.
Caroline remained standing near the top of the stairs for two full seconds.
She did not run.
She did not scream.
She simply watched.
Only after Nora reached the middle of the staircase did Caroline begin moving.
Gabriel stopped the video.
Nobody spoke.
Caroline's lips parted.
"I can explain."
Gabriel stared at her.
"Did you do this?"
"No."
"You touched the stroller."
"I was trying to stop it."
"You stood there afterward."
"I was shocked."
Nora finally managed to stand.
"You released the brake."
Caroline spun around.
"You don't know what you saw."
"I heard it."
Gabriel looked at Nora.
"Heard what?"
"The brake."
Nora's voice shook.
"That stroller has a locking mechanism. It makes a very specific click when someone releases it."
Caroline's eyes filled with anger.
"You are unbelievable."
Nora continued.
"I heard the click before the stroller moved."
Gabriel felt something inside him turn cold.
He looked at his sister.
The woman who had slept in the bedroom across from his daughter's room for almost six months.
The woman who had moved into Mercer House after Julia's funeral because she said Gabriel should not raise two children alone.
The woman who had held Emma while Gabriel selected flowers for his wife's grave.
The woman who had told Lily that family protected family.
Gabriel handed Emma to Nora.
"Take her into the sitting room."
Caroline stepped forward.
"Gabriel."
He did not look at her.
"Ben."
One of the two security guards entered from the eastern doorway.
"Sir."
"Take Caroline to my study."
Caroline stared at him.
"You cannot be serious."
"And call the police."
Her confidence vanished.
"Gabriel."
He finally looked at her.
"You nearly sent my daughter down a marble staircase."
"I didn't."
"I watched you touch the stroller."
"You don't understand what happened."
"Then explain it to the police."
Caroline lowered her voice.
"You don't want them here."
Gabriel froze.
"What?"
"You heard me."
Something in her expression made him uneasy.
It was no longer panic.
It was warning.
"You don't want police searching this house."
Gabriel stared at her.
"Why?"
Caroline's eyes moved briefly toward Lily.
Then back to him.
"Because Julia left more behind than you know."
Gabriel felt the entire foyer disappear around him.
His late wife's name had not been spoken like that since the funeral.
"What did you say?"
Caroline took another step backward as Ben approached.
"I said you have no idea what your wife was doing before she died."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"Take her."
Ben and another guard moved toward Caroline.
She did not resist.
Not yet.
But as they escorted her toward the study, she turned her head and stared directly at Nora.
For the first time that morning, Nora looked truly afraid.
Then Caroline said something so quietly that Gabriel almost missed it.
"You should have left when she told you to."
Nora's face lost all color.
Gabriel followed Caroline with his eyes until the study door closed.
Then he turned slowly toward Nora.
"What did she mean?"
Nora did not answer.
"Nora."
She held Emma tighter.
Lily moved closer to Gabriel.
Nora looked at the little girl.
Then toward the staircase.
Then finally at Gabriel.
"Mrs. Mercer spoke to me three days before the accident."
Gabriel stopped breathing.
Julia had died four months earlier when her SUV went through a guardrail during a rainstorm.
The police had called it an accident.
Gabriel had believed them.
"What did Julia say?"
Nora's eyes filled with tears.
"She told me that if anything ever happened to her, I was supposed to protect Lily and Emma."
Gabriel felt cold spread through his body.
"Protect them from what?"
Nora looked toward the closed study door.
"She never told me."
A police siren became audible outside the mansion.
Nora whispered the rest.
"But she did tell me one thing."
May you like
Gabriel waited.
"She said the danger was already inside this house."
