Chapter 9 - Where They Promised Never to Lie

The unfinished house stood beyond the last streetlight on Meadow Lane.

Its windows were dark holes. Weeds covered the driveway. The porch where Maya and Daniel once planned their future sagged beneath years of rain.

Maya entered through a side door.

A lantern glowed in the kitchen.

Daniel stood beside it.

For a moment, neither moved.

He was thinner. A scar crossed his left temple. His hair was longer, and his face carried the exhausted caution of a man who slept near exits. But he was Daniel. The same dark eyes. The same slight tilt of his head when afraid to speak.

Maya crossed the room and slapped him.

The sound echoed through the empty house.

Daniel accepted it.

She struck his chest with both hands. “I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I held our daughter beside your grave.”

“I know.”

“You watched us?”

“From far away.”

She hit him again, then broke, pressing both fists against her mouth to keep from screaming.

Daniel reached for her but stopped before touching her.

“I am sorry.”

“You do not get to use that word.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“The crash was staged because the Circle discovered I copied the ledger. I thought if they believed I was dead, you would be safe.”

“They did not believe it.”

“Not for long.”

“You let me live alone with a newborn while people watched us.”

“I had someone protecting you.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Maya laughed bitterly. “The mother who disappeared with Veronica?”

“Lillian infiltrated the Circle before you were born. She stayed because leaving would have exposed you.”

“Evelyn said she tried to leave.”

“She did. Richard Sterling created the trust to buy her freedom, but Gideon Vale changed the terms. The trust became a control mechanism. It transfers authority only through the bloodline.”

Maya stepped back. “Is Richard my father?”

Daniel’s silence answered.

“You knew.”

“I confirmed it after Chloe was born.”

“And Alexander is my brother.”

“Half brother.”

A floorboard creaked outside.

Daniel drew a gun.

Alexander stepped through the doorway with both hands visible.

“Put it down.”

Daniel aimed at him. “You should not have followed her.”

Maya moved between them. “No more secrets. Not from either of you.”

Alexander’s eyes stayed on Daniel. “Did you take Lillian and Veronica?”

“I removed them before the Custodian killed them.”

“Where are they?”

“Safe for the moment.”

“Who is the Custodian?” Maya asked.

Daniel looked toward the windows. “I thought it was Gideon. Then I learned Gideon died in the fire. The person using his identity inherited the archive.”

“Who?”

“I do not know.”

Alexander said, “Convenient.”

Daniel’s gun shifted toward him. “Your company financed the Circle.”

“My father’s company.”

“You signed the budgets.”

“I did not know.”

Daniel gave a hollow smile. “That is what powerful men say when the basement is finally opened.”

Maya stepped closer to Daniel. “Did you arrange Chloe’s disappearance?”

“No.”

“Did you send Alexander the warning?”

“Yes.”

“Did you send Veronica the message?”

“No. That was the Custodian.”

“Why did Veronica take Chloe?”

“She believed she was following a plan to discredit you. She was told Chloe would be returned after an hour. Then she learned the basement office had been rigged to burn.”

Maya’s breath caught. “Burn?”

“Alexander arrived before the timer activated. Veronica realized the Custodian intended to kill Chloe and frame her. She ran because the Circle kills failed operatives.”

Alexander’s expression tightened. “The office was searched. No incendiary device was found.”

“Because I removed it.”

“You were in my restaurant?”

“I have been inside every Sterling property that matters.”

Daniel lowered the gun and removed a small drive from his pocket. “This contains part of the ledger and a list of Circle accounts. Enough to expose them, not enough to destroy them.”

Maya reached for it.

Daniel pulled back. “There is a condition.”

“No.”

“You need to leave with Chloe tonight. New identities. No contact with Alexander, police, or me.”

“You lost the right to decide my life when you faked your death.”

“If you stay, they will use Chloe.”

“They already did.”

Alexander said, “Give us the drive.”

Daniel looked at him. “You are still thinking like an owner. This is not a company you can restructure.”

Headlights swept across the windows.

Several vehicles entered the driveway.

Daniel extinguished the lantern.

“Did you bring police?” he whispered.

Maya said no.

Alexander said, “I came alone.”

Red laser points appeared on the walls.

Daniel pulled Maya behind a support beam as gunfire tore through the windows. Alexander overturned a workbench and returned fire with a weapon drawn from an ankle holster.

Maya stared at him.

“You came armed?”

“My family taught me one useful lesson.”

Daniel kicked open a trapdoor hidden beneath loose boards. “Tunnel. Now.”

They descended as bullets struck the kitchen above. The tunnel led to an old drainage channel behind the property.

Daniel went first. Maya followed. Alexander covered them.

Halfway through, an explosion collapsed the entrance.

They emerged near the woods, choking on dust.

Daniel checked his pocket.

The drive was gone.

Maya opened her hand.

She had taken it while he shielded her.

Before she could speak, her phone lit up with a live video.

Chloe’s hospital crib was empty.

Mrs. Alvarez lay unconscious on the floor.

A figure in a nurse’s uniform carried the baby toward an elevator.
