Chapter 10 - The Second Time Chloe Vanished

Maya ran before thought could catch her.

The hospital was twelve miles away. Alexander’s car was parked beyond the gunmen’s vehicles, but Daniel led them to an abandoned pickup hidden on a farm road. He drove while Alexander called Ruiz and hospital security.

No one answered quickly enough.

The live video continued on Maya’s phone.

The fake nurse entered a service elevator with Chloe. The camera angle changed, proving the footage came from the hospital’s security system itself. Someone had control of the feeds.

Then the screen displayed a message.

BRING THE DRIVE TO STERLING TOWER. COME ALONE, MAYA.

Daniel slammed his hand against the wheel. “They knew about the drive.”

Alexander looked at him. “Someone at the house heard us.”

“Or someone was already inside.”

Maya clutched the phone. “Nothing matters except Chloe.”

“They will not release her,” Daniel said.

“You do not know that.”

“I know them.”

“You knew them when you abandoned us.”

Daniel flinched, but she felt no regret.

At the hospital, Ruiz met them in the loading area with armed officers. Mrs. Alvarez was alive, drugged but stable. The fake nurse had used stolen credentials to access a private parking level. A black ambulance left the building seven minutes earlier.

Traffic cameras lost it near the financial district.

Sterling Tower rose there, sixty floors of glass bearing Alexander’s name.

Ruiz wanted a tactical operation. Maya refused to wait.

“They asked for me. I will go.”

Daniel said, “You will die.”

“Then help me prevent it.”

Alexander studied the drive in her hand. “We can duplicate it.”

Daniel shook his head. “It has a destruction protocol. Copying it incorrectly wipes the account keys.”

“Can you disable it?”

“With time.”

“We have less than an hour.”

Maya looked between them. “Then make them believe I am alone.”

The plan was desperate.

Maya entered Sterling Tower through the public lobby carrying the drive in a clear evidence pouch. Her phone remained connected to Ruiz through a hidden earpiece. Daniel accessed an old maintenance tunnel beneath the parking garage. Alexander used executive credentials to enter through the rooftop helipad.

The tower had been evacuated after an anonymous bomb threat. Only emergency lights remained.

An elevator opened for Maya without her pressing a button.

It carried her to the fifty-eighth floor.

The doors opened onto Richard Sterling’s preserved executive suite, a place Alexander had kept locked since his father’s death.

Chloe sat in the center of the office inside a portable crib.

She was awake.

She saw Maya and began to cry.

Maya stepped forward.

A voice came through the ceiling speakers. This time it was not distorted.

“Stop there.”

Maya recognized the voice.

Lionel Reed, head of security at Crystal Hall.

He emerged from behind Richard Sterling’s desk holding a pistol.

“You,” Maya whispered.

Lionel smiled faintly. “Veronica was always too emotional. Daniel was always too proud. Alexander was always too willing not to see.”

“You are the Custodian.”

“I am one of them.”

The phrase chilled her.

One of them.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

“Give me my daughter.”

“Place the drive on the desk.”

Maya moved slowly. “Why is Chloe necessary?”

“The trust controls more than money. It owns voting rights in companies, land beneath government facilities, and access agreements built into the earliest Sterling contracts. Richard designed it as protection. Gideon redesigned it as continuity.”

“And Chloe?”

“Your blood opened the first vault. Hers opens the final archive.”

Maya placed the drive on the desk.

Lionel picked it up.

“Now let her go.”

He inserted the drive into a terminal. A green light appeared.

“Walk to the crib.”

Maya moved, fighting the urge to run. She reached Chloe and lifted her. The baby clung to her neck.

For one second, hope entered the room.

Then steel shutters dropped over the windows and doors.

Lionel aimed the pistol at them.

“I am sorry. The beneficiary clause requires your death before authority passes fully to the child.”

The ceiling panel above him crashed open.

Alexander dropped through, striking Lionel before the shot fired. The bullet shattered a lamp. Maya fell behind a sofa with Chloe protected beneath her body.

Daniel emerged from a concealed wall passage and joined the fight. Lionel triggered an alarm. Two armed guards entered from the private stairwell.

Gunfire erupted.

Alexander was hit in the shoulder.

Daniel shot one guard and disarmed the second. Ruiz’s tactical team breached the floor seconds later.

Lionel crawled toward the drive.

Maya reached it first.

He grabbed her ankle.

“You do not understand what you are holding.”

She kicked free. “Neither did you.”

Ruiz arrested him.

The shutters lifted.

Alexander sat against the desk, blood spreading across his shirt. Daniel pressed fabric to the wound while paramedics approached.

Maya held Chloe and finally allowed herself to believe she had her back.

Then the terminal chimed.

The drive had completed its connection.

A list of names appeared across the giant office screen.

At the top was Lionel Reed.

Beneath him were judges, officers, executives, and politicians.

Then one name appeared that made Daniel step backward.

May you like

Lillian Brooks.

Status: ACTIVE CUSTODIAN.
