Chapter 1 - Don’t Move

The restaurant had never been so quiet.

One moment earlier, Crystal Hall had been full of silverware, low conversation, and the polished rhythm of expensive service. The next, every sound died beneath Alexander Sterling’s voice.

“Don’t move.”

He stood at the bottom of the basement stairs with a sleeping baby tucked safely against his chest. Chloe’s small cheek rested against the dark fabric of his suit, her fingers curled around one of his buttons as if she had known him all her life.

Maya could not breathe.

For nearly four minutes, she had believed her daughter was gone.

Four minutes had been enough to destroy the world.

She had searched beneath tables, behind the service bar, inside the pantry, and through the crowded dining room while Veronica Hale followed her with a phone raised high, narrating every second of Maya’s panic for the staff and customers.

“She lost her own child,” Veronica had announced. “Someone call Child Protective Services.”

Then Alexander had appeared carrying Chloe.

Now the security technician froze the footage on the monitor mounted beside the wine office. The image was grainy but clear enough to make several employees gasp.

A woman in a server’s jacket was lifting Chloe from the staff break room.

The woman’s face was hidden by a cap.

But on her right wrist was a wide silver bracelet shaped like twisting leaves.

Veronica slowly lowered the hand that had been holding her phone.

Maya looked at her.

Veronica wore the same bracelet.

“No,” Veronica whispered. “That proves nothing.”

Alexander’s expression did not change. “I did not say it proved anything.”

Veronica swallowed.

He turned to the technician. “Play it.”

The recording moved forward. The disguised woman carried Chloe through the employee corridor, stopped near the stairs, and looked directly toward the camera. For half a second, the cap shifted.

Blond hair showed beneath it.

A few people turned toward Veronica.

Her face hardened. “Half the women in this city are blond.”

The video continued. The woman descended the stairs, entered the basement office, and came out alone thirty seconds later.

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

Maya stepped forward. “You found Chloe in that office?”

“Yes.”

“Why was she there?”

“I heard her crying when I arrived through the private entrance.”

Veronica laughed too loudly. “Then maybe Maya hid her there herself. Maybe this whole thing is some desperate stunt.”

Maya flinched as if struck.

Alexander handed Chloe carefully to her. Maya crushed the baby against her chest, whispering her name again and again.

Then Alexander faced Veronica.

“You removed Maya’s badge, shoved her in front of witnesses, accused her of neglect, and filmed her without helping search.”

“She is irresponsible,” Veronica snapped. “She brings a baby to work.”

“She brought Chloe because the emergency childcare room you approved was suddenly declared unavailable this morning.”

Veronica’s eyes flickered.

Maya noticed.

So did Alexander.

He turned to the head of security. “Lock the employee exits. No one leaves until police arrive.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Veronica stepped backward. “You cannot detain me.”

“I can preserve a crime scene.”

“This is not a crime scene.”

Alexander looked at the monitor again. “A child was taken and hidden in a locked basement office. It is a crime scene now.”

A siren sounded faintly outside.

Maya held Chloe tighter. Relief was beginning to give way to something colder.

The basement office belonged to Alexander Sterling.

Only three people had access.

Alexander.

The security director.

And Veronica.

The restaurant doors opened as two officers entered.

Veronica’s phone suddenly chimed.

Everyone heard it.

A message preview appeared across the screen still held in her hand.

The sender was listed as Unknown.

The message contained only six words.

YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO LOSE HER.

Alexander saw it.

May you like

Maya saw it.

And for the first time, Veronica looked genuinely terrified.
