THAT GIRL KILLED YOUR FATHER / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Room Behind the Library Wall

Adrian took Evelyn home the following afternoon.

Celeste was no longer staying at the villa.

Adrian had ordered security guards to deny her entry.

She sent twenty-three messages.

He answered none.

Evelyn looked stronger after the sedatives were stopped.

Within twenty-four hours, her speech became sharper.

Her memory improved.

By evening, she was correcting Mara about dates and reminding Adrian that he had forgotten his father's birthday when he was eleven.

Adrian nearly cried.

Someone had not simply tried to discredit his mother.

They had been slowly erasing her.

During dinner, Adrian placed the brass key on the table.

"Mom."

Evelyn looked at it.

"We need to know what this opens."

She nodded.

"Thomas never told me."

"What did he keep locked?"

"Everything."

"Specific rooms?"

"The wine cellar. His desk. The old gun cabinet."

"Those keys are different."

Mara entered carrying tea.

Then stopped.

"There's one place."

Adrian looked at her.

"What?"

"The library wall."

Evelyn frowned.

Mara explained.

"When your father renovated the west wing twenty years ago, he had carpenters working behind the library."

"A hidden room?"

"I don't know. He dismissed the workers before the project was finished and completed it himself."

Adrian remembered the library.

One wall contained floor-to-ceiling walnut bookshelves.

He had spent thousands of hours there as a child.

After dinner, the three of them searched it.

Nothing.

Then Evelyn noticed a small brass plate beneath a shelf.

Adrian cleared the books away.

There was a keyhole.

The brass key fit.

A section of shelving released with a quiet click.

Behind it was a narrow doorway.

Evelyn whispered.

"Thomas."

Adrian turned on his phone flashlight.

The hidden room was small.

A desk.

Two filing cabinets.

A safe.

And dozens of photographs covering the walls.

Adrian stepped inside.

Nearly every photograph showed the same man.

Roman Vale.

At airports.

Hotels.

Restaurants.

Different countries.

Different years.

Some images were blurry.

Others unmistakable.

Roman had aged.

His hair was gray now.

But he was alive.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"Thomas knew."

Adrian studied the dates.

The earliest photograph was taken nine years after Roman supposedly died.

Three years ago.

The same year Thomas opened the coffin.

There were maps marked with red circles.

Zurich.

Monaco.

Dubai.

Boston.

New York.

At the center of the desk sat a folder labeled ORCHARD.

Adrian opened it.

Inside were financial records tracing hundreds of millions of dollars through shell companies.

RVA Holdings appeared repeatedly.

So did Vale Meridian.

Adrian felt sick.

Someone had been using his father's company.

Possibly for years.

A note in Thomas's handwriting was clipped to the first page.

Roman never wanted the company.

He wanted the routes.

"What routes?" Evelyn asked.

Adrian continued reading.

Shipping routes.

Private aviation contracts.

Security contractors.

Data centers.

Vale Meridian owned infrastructure across four continents.

Roman had been using those networks to move money and information.

Maybe more.

Then Adrian found Celeste's name.

CELESTE ROWAN - RECRUITED 2019.

Adrian stared at it.

He had met her in 2021.

Two years later.

Their meeting had not been accidental.

Beneath her name was a handwritten note.

Primary objective: Adrian.

His chest tightened.

Evelyn touched his shoulder.

"Oh, sweetheart."

Adrian turned away.

Every memory became contaminated.

Their first date.

The proposal.

Her tears when he gave her his grandmother's ring.

Had any of it been real?

Mara called from the doorway.

"There's another file."

She held a black folder.

Written across it were two words.

SAFE LOCATION.

Inside was a sketch of Vale House.

A red X marked the old music room.

They hurried there.

Behind a portrait of Adrian's grandfather was another recessed safe.

The brass key did not fit.

A digital keypad required six digits.

Evelyn stared at it.

"That's what she wanted."

Adrian nodded.

The safe code.

Celeste must have known about the safe but not how to open it.

Thomas had hidden something inside that mattered enough for her to threaten Evelyn.

"Any idea what the code is?"

Evelyn shook her head.

Adrian tried birthdays.

Thomas's.

Evelyn's.

His own.

Wrong.

He tried the date Vale Meridian was founded.

Wrong.

Then Evelyn whispered.

"Roman's birthday."

Adrian entered it.

Wrong.

He looked at the keypad.

"What would Dad use?"

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"Something no thief would understand."

Adrian thought about his father.

Thomas loved puzzles.

He also loved repeating one phrase whenever Adrian made mistakes as a child.

Never remember the victory. Remember the day you learned why you lost.

Adrian suddenly knew.

He entered the date of Roman's disappearance.

The lock clicked.

Inside were three objects.

A black ledger.

A small voice recorder.

And a sealed envelope addressed to Adrian.

He opened the envelope first.

Son,

If you are reading this, Roman has probably reached the house.

Do not give this ledger to the police until you know who among them belongs to him.

Do not trust anyone solely because I trusted them.

And whatever you discover about me, remember that I spent the last years of my life trying to undo what I once helped build.

Adrian stopped.

Helped build?

Evelyn read over his shoulder.

"What did Thomas mean?"

Adrian continued.

There is one truth I kept from you because I was ashamed.

Roman did not build Orchard alone.

I did.

Evelyn sat down.

Adrian felt as though his father's voice had reached through time and struck him.

The letter continued.

We created it thirty-one years ago.

At first it was only a network for moving confidential corporate information.

Then Roman changed it.

Money.

Weapons.

People.

By the time I understood what he had turned us into, leaving was no longer simple.

Adrian's hands shook.

I tried to stop him.

The night he disappeared, I believed I had succeeded.

I was wrong.

The final sentence was underlined.

And if Roman has returned, there is only one reason.

He believes the ledger belongs to him.

Adrian looked at the black book.

Mara suddenly whispered.

"Mr. Adrian."

She was staring at the doorway.

"What?"

"The shelf."

Adrian turned.

The hidden library door they had left open was now closed.

May you like

Someone had been inside the house with them.

Then they heard footsteps running down the corridor.
