THAT GIRL KILLED YOUR FATHER / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Door Thomas Never Wanted Adrian to Open

Three weeks after the shooting at Vale House, Adrian believed the worst was finally behind them.

Celeste was imprisoned.

Reed had confessed.

Federal investigators had seized dozens of Orchard-linked accounts.

Evelyn was recovering.

David had agreed to spend Christmas at Vale House.

For the first time since Thomas died, the mansion no longer felt like a grave.

Then Helena Cross walked through the front door.

No guards stopped her.

No alarms sounded.

She simply appeared in the hallway at 7:14 one morning wearing a gray coat and carrying Thomas Vale's missing voice recorder.

Adrian came downstairs and stopped.

Helena smiled.

"Good morning."

Security rushed from two directions.

Adrian raised his hand.

"Wait."

Helena placed the recorder on the foyer table.

"I'm unarmed."

"That doesn't make you safe."

"I didn't come to hurt anyone."

Evelyn appeared at the top of the stairs.

When she saw Helena, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Old anger.

"You."

Helena looked up.

"Hello, Evelyn."

"You ruined this family."

"No."

Helena's voice remained calm.

"Thomas and Roman did that before I arrived."

Adrian walked toward her.

"Why are you here?"

"Because Roman disappeared yesterday."

"Where?"

"No one knows."

"Convenient."

"Very."

"Did you help him?"

"No."

"Do you work for Gardener?"

Helena laughed.

"Adrian, people keep asking the wrong question."

"What question should I ask?"

"Not who Gardener is."

She looked toward Evelyn.

"Ask why Thomas named the organization Orchard."

Adrian frowned.

"Because of the Gardener?"

"Close."

Helena picked up the recorder.

"Thomas left three recordings."

"I heard one."

"You heard the recording Mercer kept."

"And someone stole the one from the safe."

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because Thomas ordered me to."

Adrian stared.

"You were in the study when he died."

"Yes."

"You let my mother think Celeste murdered him."

"Celeste helped."

"You let Mercer lie."

"To keep him alive."

"You let me chase Roman."

"You needed to."

Adrian's anger rose.

"Stop deciding what I need."

Helena nodded.

"Fair."

She placed the recorder in his hand.

"Then decide for yourself."

Adrian looked at it.

"What's on this?"

"The reason Thomas created the shutdown protocol."

Evelyn descended the stairs.

"Don't play it."

Adrian looked at her.

"Why?"

Evelyn's face was pale.

"Because I know what he'll say."

Helena's expression sharpened.

"You knew?"

Evelyn whispered.

"Not everything."

"Mom."

Evelyn came closer.

"Adrian, your father made terrible choices before you were born."

"I already know."

"No."

She looked at the recorder.

"You know about Orchard."

"What else is there?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"The children."

Adrian became still.

"What children?"

Helena looked away.

For the first time, the calm woman appeared uncomfortable.

Evelyn continued.

"Orchard wasn't originally a financial network."

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"Then what was it?"

"An intelligence program."

"What kind?"

"Thomas and Roman gathered information about wealthy families."

"Why?"

"Leverage."

"Blackmail?"

"Sometimes."

"What do children have to do with it?"

Evelyn struggled to speak.

Helena answered.

"They tracked heirs."

Adrian looked at her.

"Tracked?"

"Which children would inherit companies. Political influence. Trusts. Voting power."

"That's disgusting, but not..."

He stopped.

Something in Helena's face told him there was more.

"What did they do?"

"At first, nothing."

"And later?"

"Roman started shaping outcomes."

Adrian's voice became quiet.

"What does that mean?"

"Removing one heir so another inherited."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Adrian felt cold.

"Murder?"

"Sometimes accidents," Helena said.

"Sometimes scandals. Addictions. Financial ruin."

Adrian could barely breathe.

"Children?"

"Not always children by the time action was taken."

Adrian looked at the recorder.

"My father participated?"

"At the beginning," Helena said.

Evelyn shook her head.

"He said he never knew how far Roman went."

Helena gave her a hard look.

"Thomas always knew more than he admitted."

Adrian pressed play.

Static.

Then Thomas's voice.

"Adrian."

His father's voice sounded weaker than on the first recording.

"If Helena has given you this, then either Roman has lost control or I have lost the ability to contain what we created."

A pause.

"Orchard began with names."

Adrian looked at Helena.

Thomas continued.

"Families. Children. Successors."

Another pause.

"We believed information could prevent wars between powerful men."

A humorless breath.

"We were arrogant."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Roman learned that controlling succession was more valuable than controlling money."

The recorder crackled.

"Every important family has a tree."

Thomas coughed.

"Roman believed every tree could be pruned."

Evelyn began crying silently.

"That's why we called it Orchard."

Adrian's grip tightened.

Then Thomas said.

"But Roman was never the Gardener."

Helena looked sharply at the recorder.

Adrian stared at her.

Even she had not expected that.

Thomas continued.

"The Gardener existed before Roman and me."

Adrian's heartbeat quickened.

"Roman thought he found Orchard."

A pause.

"He didn't."

Static interrupted the recording.

Then Thomas returned.

"He inherited it."

Adrian looked at Helena.

"From whom?"

She whispered.

"I don't know."

Thomas continued.

"If you are hearing this, you will eventually discover the shutdown protocol."

Adrian held his breath.

"The biometric key is yours."

He already knew that.

"The activation phrase is something I said to you every time you failed."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Never remember the victory. Remember the day you learned why you lost.

Thomas's voice continued.

"But do not activate it."

Adrian frowned.

"Not until you understand what it actually does."

Static.

Then a final sentence.

"Because Orchard has been watching you since the day you were born."

The recording ended.

Silence filled the foyer.

Adrian looked at Helena.

"What happens if I activate it?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Celeste said it exposes everyone."

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"Thomas never gave me access."

David arrived from Boston that afternoon.

Together they examined the black ledger and Thomas's data card.

David placed the card into an isolated computer.

Adrian used biometric authentication.

A password field appeared.

Adrian entered the phrase.

NEVER REMEMBER THE VICTORY. REMEMBER THE DAY YOU LEARNED WHY YOU LOST.

The screen changed.

ORCHARD MASTER ARCHIVE

STATUS: DORMANT

AUTHORIZED HEIR: ADRIAN VALE

Adrian stared.

"Authorized heir?"

David frowned.

"Why heir?"

Helena stood behind them.

"Don't activate anything."

Adrian scrolled.

There were thousands of encrypted directories.

Political families.

Corporate dynasties.

Royal households.

Judges.

Military officers.

Media owners.

Names from almost every continent.

Then Adrian found the Vale directory.

He opened it.

THOMAS VALE - DECEASED

ROMAN VALE - STATUS UNKNOWN

DANIEL VALE - ACTIVE

ADRIAN VALE - ACTIVE

EVELYN VALE - ACTIVE

Then another name appeared.

Adrian froze.

DAVID VALE - ACTIVE

Daniel and David were listed separately.

David leaned closer.

"What?"

Adrian scrolled.

There were five children listed beneath Thomas Vale.

Five.

Not two.

"That's impossible."

Helena came closer.

Her face changed.

Evelyn whispered.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"You knew?"

"No."

She stepped backward.

"I swear."

The remaining names were hidden behind encryption.

Adrian clicked the first.

ACCESS DENIED.

The second.

ACCESS DENIED.

Then the computer displayed a new message.

LIVE ORCHARD CONNECTION DETECTED.

Helena shouted.

"Disconnect it."

David reached for the cable.

Too late.

A video window opened automatically.

Black screen.

Then an image appeared.

A man sat in darkness.

Only part of his face was visible.

Gray hair.

Older.

Adrian's heart stopped.

Roman Vale.

Alive.

Roman smiled.

"Hello, nephew."

Evelyn gripped the back of a chair.

David moved closer to the screen.

Roman looked at him.

"And hello, Daniel."

David's jaw tightened.

"Where are you?"

Roman ignored the question.

Instead, he looked directly toward Adrian.

"I wondered how long Thomas's little puzzle would keep you busy."

Adrian's voice was cold.

"You killed him."

Roman smiled.

"No."

"Then who did?"

"Still asking the easy question."

"Give me a name."

"I could."

Roman leaned closer to the camera.

"But then you would stop looking."

Adrian stared.

"Looking for what?"

"Your family."

Adrian glanced at the five names.

Roman saw him do it.

His smile widened.

"You opened the Vale file."

"Who are the other children?"

Evelyn whispered.

"Adrian, don't."

Roman laughed softly.

"Poor Evelyn."

He looked toward her.

"You truly never knew."

Evelyn's face collapsed.

"Roman."

"Thomas was always better at secrets than marriage."

Adrian slammed his hand against the desk.

"Who are they?"

Roman became serious.

"One of them already found you."

Adrian stopped.

"What?"

Roman looked away from the camera as though someone had entered the room beside him.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Celeste had said she had seen Roman afraid only once.

Now Adrian saw it himself.

A voice came from somewhere off-screen.

Calm.

Older.

"Enough."

Roman immediately stopped speaking.

Helena's face drained of color.

Adrian looked at her.

"Who is that?"

She whispered.

"I don't know."

The unseen person spoke again.

"Roman."

Roman lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

"End the connection."

Adrian moved toward the screen.

"Wait."

Roman looked back at him.

For one instant, the arrogance disappeared.

He looked almost apologetic.

"Adrian."

"What?"

Roman swallowed.

"When they ask you to activate Orchard..."

The unseen voice interrupted.

"Roman."

Roman rushed the final words.

"...don't trust the one who calls you brother."

The screen went black.

David stepped backward.

Adrian slowly turned toward him.

Neither spoke.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

The front doorbell.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

One of Adrian's security guards entered.

"Mr. Vale?"

Adrian looked toward him.

"There's someone outside asking for you."

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

"He says his name is Michael Wren."

David went completely still.

Adrian frowned.

"Do you know him?"

David's face had turned white.

"No."

The doorbell rang again.

The guard continued.

"He says he has proof he's Thomas Vale's son."

Silence.

Then the guard added the sentence that made Evelyn grab Adrian's arm.

"And he says Roman sent him here to kill you."

Adrian looked toward the front door.

On the computer behind him, the Vale family file refreshed by itself.

One of the encrypted names unlocked.

MICHAEL VALE - ACTIVE

Then a second message appeared beneath it.

GARDENER AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

The front door began to open.

And somewhere deep inside the walls of Vale House, a lock Thomas had hidden for decades released with a single metallic click.
