SILENCE WAS NEVER WEAKNESS / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Trap Built for Evelyn

The power returned after forty-three seconds.

The station’s backup generator had not failed.

Someone had shut it down manually.

The control panel was located in a locked utility room accessible only with a supervisor’s key.

Captain Ross had one.

Lieutenant Marsh, who was off duty, had another.

A third key was stored in the evidence room.

It was missing.

Naomi ordered the building sealed.

Every officer, employee and visitor was searched. No one carried the missing key, and no one admitted entering Dana’s interview room.

Evelyn read the note again.

The widow was supposed to find the ledger.

The daughter was supposed to destroy it.

The sentence felt carefully designed.

Not simply to frighten her.

To divide her from Miriam.

She returned to the room where her mother waited.

Miriam saw the paper and did not ask what it said.

“You expected something like this,” Evelyn said.

“I expected them to move once the video survived.”

“They claim I was supposed to destroy the ledger.”

“Would you?”

“No.”

“Then it was written for someone who does not know you.”

“Or someone who wants you to doubt me.”

Miriam’s expression softened.

“I have never doubted you.”

“You doubted me enough to hide Father’s case for eighteen years.”

“I doubted the system around you.”

Evelyn placed the note on the table.

“What was Father investigating?”

“Evidence seizures connected to waterfront properties. Buildings were being declared part of criminal investigations, transferred into temporary government control and later purchased through private companies.”

“Voss Development.”

“Among others.”

“And Captain Ross protected the transfers?”

“Thomas believed Ross changed evidence logs and intimidated witnesses.”

“What about the initials H.W.?”

Miriam hesitated.

“You recognized them.”

“I recognized what they could mean.”

“Helena Ward.”

The Attorney General.

Evelyn’s mentor.

The woman who had recruited her from federal service and placed her in charge of special prosecutions.

Miriam did not confirm it.

She did not need to.

Evelyn stood and walked to the observation glass.

“You think Helena was involved in Father’s death.”

“I think Thomas wrote her initials beside stolen evidence.”

“Helena was a county prosecutor eighteen years ago.”

“Yes.”

“She helped reopen Father’s accident review when she became Attorney General.”

“She also closed it six weeks later.”

“There was no new evidence.”

“According to her office.”

Evelyn turned.

“My office.”

“That is why I stayed silent.”

The words landed harder than an accusation.

Miriam had not hidden the truth because she thought Evelyn was weak.

She had hidden it because Evelyn’s success had placed her inside the very institution Thomas distrusted.

Naomi entered with Jonah Reed.

Jonah held a printed server log.

“We recovered seventy-eight percent of the terminal recording,” he said. “Enough to show Michael, Dana and Ross moving the box.”

“What is missing?” Evelyn asked.

“The final two minutes.”

“What happened during those two minutes?”

Jonah looked at Miriam.

“She left the terminal.”

Miriam’s eyes narrowed.

“No. My phone continued recording in the car.”

Jonah nodded.

“That is why the missing section matters. The upload did not fail naturally. Someone with administrator access removed only the fragment recorded after you reached your vehicle.”

“Who has administrator access?”

Jonah handed Naomi the log.

His own name appeared at the top.

Below it was Captain Ross.

The third account belonged to the Attorney General’s Digital Evidence Office.

Evelyn stared at the entry.

The account had accessed the server twelve minutes after her mother’s upload.

It had used Evelyn’s personal authorization code.

“That is impossible,” she said.

Naomi looked at her carefully.

“Where was your secure credential card yesterday morning?”

“In my office.”

“Who could access it?”

“No one.”

Jonah pointed to the final line.

May you like

The access request had not come from the capital.

It had come from inside Evelyn’s apartment.
