Chapter 11 - The Warehouse of Borrowed Names

The state records warehouse stood at the edge of Grayhaven’s industrial district.

From the outside, it appeared abandoned.

Inside, climate-controlled rooms held thousands of sealed files, archived court exhibits and witness-protection records.

The security system accepted Celeste Vale’s authorization immediately.

Naomi entered with a tactical evidence team. Evelyn and Miriam waited in the command vehicle outside.

The first rooms contained nothing unusual.

The lower level was different.

Behind an unmarked steel door, investigators found office furniture, active computers and surveillance equipment connected to police stations across the state.

Grayhaven was only one screen among dozens.

Another screen showed Evelyn’s apartment.

A third displayed a live view of Helena Ward’s office.

Meridian was not simply stealing property.

It was watching the people responsible for stopping it.

Naomi’s team recovered identity documents belonging to judges, officers, prosecutors, witnesses and deceased government employees. Some appeared authentic. Others had been manufactured.

One file was labeled Thomas Hart.

Inside was a photograph of Evelyn’s father taken seven years after his supposed death.

He appeared older and thinner, but unmistakably alive.

Miriam held the photograph with both hands.

“Where was this taken?”

Naomi examined the background.

“A medical facility, possibly private.”

Evelyn looked at the date.

“If he was alive eleven years ago, why did he never contact us?”

Miriam answered before Naomi could.

“Because he believed contacting us would place us in danger.”

“You cannot know that.”

“No,” Miriam said. “But I know your father.”

A second item lay inside the file.

A letter addressed to Evelyn.

The envelope remained sealed.

Naomi photographed it and allowed Evelyn to open it under observation.

The handwriting belonged to Thomas.

Evelyn,

If this reaches you, then Meridian has lost control of one of its archives. That will mean you are already in danger.

Do not believe the first person who admits the truth. Confession is one of their tools.

The organization survives by giving every investigator a villain to arrest while the real authority remains untouched.

Ross is not the beginning.

Voss is not the beginning.

Helena is not the beginning.

The ledger is divided into three parts. I hid one. Paul Reed hid another. The third was placed where no one would search because everyone believed it had already been destroyed.

Trust your mother.

She knows what I could never place in writing.

The letter ended without a signature.

Evelyn looked at Miriam.

“What do you know?”

Miriam’s face had gone pale.

“Thomas left a message in our house.”

“You told me you had no proof.”

“I had no proof I understood.”

“What message?”

“He repaired the dining-room wall one week before the crash. He said the plaster was damaged.”

Evelyn remembered the house she had grown up in. Miriam still lived there.

“What is inside the wall?”

“I never opened it.”

“Why not?”

“Because he told me not to open it unless someone used the words borrowed names.”

Evelyn looked at the warehouse shelves filled with stolen identities.

Miriam folded Thomas’s letter.

“Those were the words he used.”

Naomi left the warehouse team to secure the computers. She drove Evelyn and Miriam directly to the Hart house.

The dining room had not changed in years.

Miriam pointed to a section of wall behind a wooden cabinet.

Jonah arrived with equipment and carefully removed a narrow piece of plaster.

Inside the wall was a small steel cylinder.

It contained a cassette tape.

The missing tape from Thomas’s evidence inventory had been a copy.

This was the original.

Jonah found an old player in the attic.

The tape began with static.

Then Thomas Hart’s voice filled the room.

“My name is Thomas Hart. If Miriam is hearing this, Meridian has returned.”

A door slammed somewhere outside the house.

The lights went out.

May you like

Thomas’s voice continued in the darkness.

“The person directing them is someone Evelyn will trust without question.”
