SHE IS NOT YOUR PROPERTY / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - the aircraft that called her by name

The mountain coordinates belonged to an airspace no civilian chart acknowledged.

Official maps showed forests, cliffs, and an abandoned weather station. Military maps displayed a restricted zone without explanation. Orion’s records showed more than thirty aircraft entering the region.

None had recorded a departure.

Cross wanted to send an unmanned surveillance system first.

Military command refused authorization.

The refusal arrived less than four minutes after her request, suggesting someone had been waiting for it.

Gabriel studied the map from his hospital room.

“The symbol belongs to Northwatch.”

Elias stood beside his bed.

“What is Northwatch?”

“I heard the name while they held me. They described it as a refuge.”

“For missing pilots?”

“For anyone the Custodian considered too important to remain visible.”

Mara looked at the routes.

“Important to whom?”

Gabriel’s expression darkened.

“That depended on the passenger.”

Some were witnesses.

Some were scientists.

Some were officials facing criminal charges.

Some were children transferred during international custody disputes.

Orion had not judged innocence or guilt. It had only recorded that people disappeared.

The Custodian decided who deserved to vanish.

Mara understood why her father had tried to expose the network without destroying the ledger. If Orion disappeared, no one would ever locate the passengers.

But if the Custodian controlled it, Flight 714 could continue under another name.

Cross entered the hospital room carrying a secure tablet.

“Adrian has escaped.”

Elias turned sharply.

“He was held in a military detention facility.”

“The transport order carried valid judicial signatures. The officers believed they were moving him to a closed hearing.”

“Who signed it?”

“One judge is dead. The other denies ever seeing the order.”

Mara already knew what the final name would show.

“The third signature belongs to my father.”

Cross placed the tablet on the table.

DANIEL ELLISON appeared beneath the transfer authorization.

The signature passed every digital verification test.

“Where was Adrian taken?” Mara asked.

“The transport vehicle stopped beneath a highway surveillance camera for eleven seconds. When it continued, Adrian was gone.”

Gabriel looked toward the mountain coordinates.

“The Custodian collected him.”

“Why rescue a man who failed?”

“To learn what he revealed.”

A nurse appeared in the doorway.

“Commander, an aviation officer is asking for Miss Ellison.”

Mara followed the others into the corridor.

Captain Lee waited beside the window.

His face was pale.

“You need to see the runway.”

They entered the hospital’s eastern observation room.

The military medical runway extended beyond the glass.

A black aircraft had landed without clearance.

No registration number marked its fuselage.

No ground crew approached it.

The control tower had received no request for landing and no response to warnings.

Its engines remained running.

A set of boarding stairs lowered.

No one emerged.

Then every phone in the observation room rang at once.

Mara answered the nearest one.

For several seconds, she heard only the low sound of an aircraft cabin.

Then Adrian spoke.

“Mara.”

Elias moved closer to the phone.

Cross began tracing the transmission.

“You should not have opened your father’s office,” Adrian continued.

Mara watched the black aircraft.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere your father believed you would never have to see.”

“Is he alive?”

Adrian laughed weakly.

“He asked me the same question about you.”

Mara’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Put him on.”

“I cannot.”

“Then why did you call?”

“To warn you.”

“You followed me, forged my contract, tried to put me on an invisible aircraft, and imprisoned people for years. You don’t get to warn me.”

“I did not imprison those pilots.”

“You operated the flights.”

“I operated the routes the Custodian gave me.”

“You expect me to believe you were only following orders?”

“No. I expect you to understand that my failure has made you the new target.”

The black aircraft’s cabin lights switched on one row at a time.

A figure appeared behind the first window.

Mara could not see the face.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“The Custodian needs an active Ellison witness to control Orion permanently.”

“My father is active.”

“Not anymore.”

The Orion tablet in Cross’s hands sounded an alert.

Daniel Ellison’s witness light had disappeared.

Mara stared at the empty space where his name had been.

“What did you do to him?”

“I never reached him.”

The figure inside the aircraft moved toward the open door.

Elias left the observation room and headed for the runway. Cross called security teams into position, but the black aircraft blocked their communication system.

Mara remained beside the phone.

“Who is on that plane?”

Adrian breathed slowly.

“The person who authorized the first Flight 714.”

“The fourth founder?”

“Yes.”

“Give me a name.”

A second figure appeared inside the cabin.

Adrian’s voice became urgent.

“Mara, listen carefully. When the door opens, do not believe the first person you see.”

The line went silent.

Mara ran after Elias and Cross.

They reached the runway as military vehicles surrounded the aircraft. Soldiers raised their weapons but received no command to advance.

The figure stepped into the doorway.

Mara stopped.

A man descended slowly.

His hair had turned gray, and one side of his face carried the pale marks of an old accident.

But she recognized the way he held the stair rail.

She recognized the watch on his wrist.

She recognized the eyes she had seen in the mirror every morning of her life.

“Dad?”

Daniel Ellison reached the bottom of the stairs.

Mara took one step toward him.

Elias caught her hand before she could take another.

Adrian’s warning repeated inside her mind.

Do not believe the first person you see.

Daniel looked at Elias, Cross, and Gabriel.

Then his eyes settled on Mara.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

The aircraft door remained open behind him.

Someone else stood in the darkness of the cabin.

Daniel slowly raised both hands.

“I did not come here alone.”

Mara saw a metal object secured around his wrist.

A control device.

Its screen displayed the Orion symbol and a countdown beginning at ten minutes.

“Who brought you?” she asked.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

The person inside the aircraft stepped closer to the light.

Commander Elias Voss became perfectly still.

Gabriel whispered a name Mara could not hear.

The hidden passenger wore an old military uniform.

On the jacket was the same authorization seal that had appeared on Flight 714 for six years.

The figure looked directly at Mara.

“Your father has told you only half the truth.”

Across the airfield, every aircraft engine started at once.

The Orion tablet displayed a new route.

Passenger: Mara Ellison.

Pilot: Commander Elias Voss.

Destination: Northwatch.

The countdown continued.

Nine minutes and forty-two seconds.

Mara looked at Elias.

He had not touched the tablet.

He had not authorized the flight.

But beneath his name, the system showed a green confirmation.

Someone had just used his identity again.

The figure inside the aircraft extended one hand toward Mara.

“Come aboard, and your father walks away.”

Daniel shook his head urgently.

“Mara, don’t.”

The runway gates closed behind them.

The aircraft waiting around the hospital began moving into formation.

Cross tried to contact military command.

Only one voice answered through every radio.

“The witness has arrived.”

Mara looked at the father she had mourned, the aircraft prepared in her name, and the stranger wearing the authority of a forgotten war.

Then the Orion system revealed one final line.

CUSTODIAN IDENTITY VERIFIED.

The name remained hidden.

The countdown reached nine minutes.

And the black aircraft opened its second door.
