Chapter 13 - the doors opened from the inside

Adrian Vale’s arrest did not repair everything immediately.

For three days, Vale Meridian remained closed while investigators searched its hangars, tunnels, offices, and private terminals.

They found seventeen hidden rooms.

Nine contained flight records.

Four held surveillance equipment.

Two had been used to keep witnesses from reaching public areas before unauthorized departures.

One was empty except for a chair, a camera, and a wall covered with photographs of Mara.

The final room could not be opened.

Its lock belonged to the Orion system.

Mara refused to enter it until the rescued pilots had been reunited with their families.

She stood at the family terminal when Captain Ortiz met the son who had been told she died in an ocean accident. Lieutenant Pierce’s parents arrived several hours later. Rowan’s daughter slept in his arms while he gave investigators every message Adrian’s people had sent him.

Mara’s mother remained close but quiet.

Their reunion was not simple.

Relief existed beside anger.

Her mother had known Daniel survived the crash, yet she had allowed Mara to mourn him for years.

They sat together in an empty departure lounge after midnight.

“Why did you let me work for Adrian?” Mara asked.

Her mother’s eyes lowered.

“I begged you not to accept the job.”

“You never told me why.”

“Your father’s message said Adrian would become suspicious if we suddenly avoided the company. Daniel believed you would be safer if you appeared unaware.”

“Was I?”

“No.”

The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

Mara looked through the windows at the silent runway.

“Did Dad contact you again?”

“Once each year. Always through a different person.”

“What did he say?”

“That he was trying to identify the fourth founder.”

“The traitor.”

Her mother nodded.

“Did he tell you a name?”

“No. His final message arrived six months ago. He said the traitor had learned how to control Orion.”

Mara thought of the identity transfer that had saved Adrian’s jet. Her father’s authorization had become active for less than a minute.

“Where did the message come from?”

Her mother removed a small brass token from her bag.

It carried the Orion symbol on one side and a set of coordinates on the other.

“I was told to give this to you only after Adrian lost control of Vale Meridian.”

Mara took it.

The coordinates identified a location in the northern mountains.

Elias entered the lounge before she could ask another question.

He no longer wore his decorated jacket. Investigators had taken it as evidence after the archive fire. In a plain uniform shirt, he looked less like the distant commander employees saw at ceremonies.

He placed a document on the table.

“Military legal command has withdrawn the arrest order.”

“For you?”

“For all of us. Cross has been reinstated. Soren is being held without release.”

Mara waited.

“And Adrian?”

“Charged under federal aviation and unlawful detention statutes. His attorneys are requesting a closed proceeding because of the classified records.”

“Will they get one?”

“Part of the hearing may be restricted, but the employment fraud cannot be hidden. Neither can the rescued crews.”

Mara looked down at the brass token.

“He said his arrest would not end it.”

“He was telling the truth.”

“You believe him?”

“I believe the second aircraft.”

The unknown plane had landed at a military base after the interceptors surrounded it.

When officers opened it, they found no pilot.

The cockpit had been operated remotely.

The passenger cabin contained hundreds of blank passports and a list of coordinates matching several Orion routes.

Someone had erased the aircraft’s internal memory before investigators boarded.

Mara showed Elias the token.

“My father sent this.”

He examined the coordinates.

“Restricted mountain airspace.”

“Do you know what is there?”

“No official facility.”

“That does not answer my question.”

A faint smile touched his face, then disappeared.

“My brother may know.”

Gabriel was being treated at a military hospital under protection. Unlike the false Gabriel, he had passed every identity test Elias requested.

Yet he remembered very little about the years after his disappearance.

His captors had moved him between facilities and forced him to verify aviation codes without revealing their purpose.

He remembered one symbol repeatedly displayed on the walls.

A mountain divided by a vertical line.

Mara turned the brass token over.

The same symbol appeared beneath the coordinates.

Before they could leave, Investigator Cross entered.

“The board has reached a temporary decision regarding Vale Meridian.”

Mara stood.

“What decision?”

“Adrian’s voting authority is suspended. Soren’s assets connected to the company are frozen. The remaining board members want to reopen under independent supervision.”

“They will choose another executive and pretend the system is fixed.”

“That was their original proposal.”

“Original?”

Cross handed her a sealed letter.

The Vale family crest appeared at the top, but the letter had been written by Malcolm Vale years before his death.

If Adrian is removed for misconduct involving Daniel Ellison’s program, operational control shall transfer to the protected employee named in the original Orion agreement.

Mara read the final line.

The protected employee was her.

“I don’t want his company.”

Cross nodded.

“You are not required to keep it.”

Mara looked through the terminal at the employees waiting for news.

Pilots who had refused Adrian.

Mechanics who had locked the runways.

Schedulers whose names had been used to hide illegal flights.

Vale Meridian did not belong only to the man whose name was on the building.

“Can it be transferred into an employee trust?”

“It can.”

“Can the rescued crews receive compensation before the board receives anything?”

“Yes.”

“Can every false employment debt be canceled?”

Cross smiled.

“That may be your first official decision.”

Mara signed only one page.

Not a contract giving Adrian control.

An order removing it.

Across the Vale Meridian system, locked employee accounts reopened. False debts disappeared. Travel restrictions were canceled. Security permissions assigned through forged agreements were revoked.

The doors Adrian had controlled opened from the inside.

For the first time in years, employees walked out without asking his permission.
