Chapter 9 - The Father at the Vault Door

The first shot echoed before Emma reached the lower landing.

The second shattered a light above her.

Leila’s agents returned fire from the corridor. Emergency shutters slammed down throughout the building, dividing the archive level into steel compartments.

Emma slipped through one just before it closed.

She was alone on the wrong side.

Ahead, the archive door stood open.

Inside, Daniel lay beside the glass pedestal, one hand pressed to his side. Austin was behind a row of cases. Victor and Emma’s father had dragged Noah and Sophie toward the inner testimony door.

"Stop!" Emma shouted.

Every head turned.

Sophie’s cheek was red where Austin had hit her.

Emma’s vision narrowed.

Her father held Noah by the collar. "Bring me the key."

"It’s gone."

"Then retrieve it."

"Let the children go first."

Victor laughed softly. "You are not negotiating from strength."

Emma stepped into the vault with empty hands raised. "You need their consent. Terrified children will not cooperate."

"Consent is a generous interpretation," Victor said.

The inner door had two glass panels at child height. Each displayed a pulsing white handprint.

Mrs. Calder had said the children had to choose. But Emma doubted the system could distinguish free choice from a forced hand.

Her father shoved Noah closer to the panel.

"Do as you’re told."

Noah looked at Emma.

She gave the smallest shake of her head.

Her father saw it.

He struck her with the back of his hand.

Emma fell against a document case.

"You have embarrassed this family for the last time," he said.

Blood filled her mouth. She pushed herself upright.

"This family embarrasses itself."

"You think raising two fatherless children makes you strong? You have lived on the edge of everything I built."

"I paid for Austin’s wedding."

"Six thousand dollars? You expect gratitude for crumbs?"

"No. I expected nothing. That was my mistake."

Austin emerged from behind the cases, face bleeding where he had struck the pedestal. He pointed his gun toward Daniel.

"Open the door, Emma."

"I can’t."

"Make them."

Emma looked at him. "Are you Lydia Cross’s son?"

The question changed the room.

Her father’s face went blank.

Victor turned sharply toward Austin.

Austin laughed, but the sound broke in the middle. "What are you talking about?"

"Celeste said your blood opens an inheritance review. Dad has spent your whole life preparing you to take something from the Cross family. Why you?"

"Because I’m his son."

"Are you?"

Her father raised his gun toward Emma. "Enough."

Daniel spoke from the floor. "Tell him, Richard."

Austin looked at their father. "Tell me what?"

Richard Rowan’s hand trembled.

Emma had never seen that before.

"Lydia was unstable," he said.

Austin stopped breathing.

"Who is Lydia?"

"Your biological mother," Daniel answered.

Austin’s gun lowered by an inch.

Richard’s voice sharpened. "She abandoned you. Margaret raised you. I gave you my name. I gave you everything."

"You said Mom nearly died having me."

"Margaret agreed to protect you."

"Does she know?"

"She always knew."

Austin stared at him as though the vault had emptied of air.

Emma saw the boy beneath the tailored suit. The five-year-old hiding beneath the desk. The teenager desperate for their father’s approval. The man who turned desperation into cruelty because cruelty made him feel chosen.

For one second, she felt pity.

Then Sophie touched her bruised cheek.

Pity did not erase accountability.

Victor moved toward Austin. "Give me your hand."

Austin backed away. "Why?"

"The review clause may grant you access."

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"Celeste knew?"

Victor did not answer.

Austin looked from Victor to Richard. "The wedding. Was it ever real?"

Emma’s father said, "This is not the time."

Austin laughed again, louder now. "Of course it’s the time. My wedding is tomorrow. My wife is upstairs. Four hundred people are coming."

"Celeste married you six weeks ago," Emma said. "The ceremony was a transfer event."

Austin stared at her.

She watched understanding arrive piece by piece.

Everyone had used him.

And he had used everyone weaker than himself.

Victor seized Austin’s wrist and sliced his palm with a small knife.

Austin shouted and fired.

The bullet struck Victor high in the shoulder.

Richard grabbed Noah and pulled him in front of his body.

Emma lunged.

Daniel rose from the floor and struck Richard from behind.

Noah dropped free. Sophie ran toward Emma.

Victor slammed Austin’s bleeding hand against a black panel beside the testimony door.

The vault lights turned red.

A mechanical voice filled the chamber.

BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANT CONFIRMED.

COERCIVE CLAIM DETECTED.

INHERITANCE REVERSAL INITIATED.

Austin looked at his blood on the glass.

"What did you do?"

The inner door opened.

Not into a room of money.

Into a courtroom.

Rows of empty wooden seats faced a raised screen. Cameras awakened along the walls. At the center stood two small white circles on the floor, sized for children.

A woman’s recorded voice began to speak.

"My name is Eleanor Cross. If this room has opened under coercive conditions, then the family I feared has reached my descendants."

Richard’s face collapsed.

May you like

He knew the voice.

He knew what came next.
