Chapter 8 - The Photograph No Mother Should See

Emma enlarged the photograph until the pixels broke apart.

She remembered the day it was taken. Noah had been twelve hours old. Rain covered the hospital window, and she had sat alone because her father refused to visit. Her mother came for nine minutes. Austin sent flowers without a card.

Daniel was supposed to be dead.

Yet the angle of the photograph came from the roof of the parking garage across the street.

"He was there," Emma said.

Mrs. Calder nodded reluctantly. "Daniel watched from a distance."

"He let me leave that hospital alone."

"Your father had men inside the building. Daniel believed approaching you would lead them to Noah."

"Everyone keeps telling me what Daniel believed."

The anger surprised her with its heat. She wanted Daniel alive. She wanted him rescued. She also wanted to stand in front of him and demand why fear had been allowed to make every decision for eleven years.

Celeste sat on the floor with her hands restrained, watching Emma.

"That anger will keep you from becoming another person they move around a board," she said.

Emma turned on her. "You do not get to advise me."

"Probably not. But I know what it means to be raised as a transaction."

Leila handed the encrypted drives to an agent and ordered Celeste taken through the tunnel. Celeste resisted only long enough to speak one final sentence.

"Austin’s ring opens the files, but his blood opens the secondary lock. Victor lied to him about that."

"What secondary lock?" Mrs. Calder asked.

"The inheritance reversal."

Then Celeste was gone.

Mrs. Calder leaned against the vanity.

"Eleanor created a penalty clause," she said. "Any descendant who knowingly attempts to seize the trust through coercion is permanently excluded. If Austin has a qualifying biological connection to the Cross line, his blood could trigger the review."

Emma stared at her. "Austin is my brother."

"I know."

"You said qualifying biological connection."

Mrs. Calder met her eyes. "I do not know the truth. But Eleanor suspected your father had a second child with Daniel’s aunt, Lydia Cross."

The room seemed to tilt.

"Austin’s mother is my mother."

"Your mother raised him. That is not necessarily the same thing."

Emma thought of all the family photographs. Her mother recovering in a private clinic after Austin’s birth. The absence of pregnancy pictures. The strange age difference between Emma and Austin, explained as a surprise. Her father’s obsession with making Austin the heir.

"Why would Dad favor a child who could inherit from the Cross family?"

"Because controlling Austin gave him another route to the trust."

A memory surfaced.

When Emma was thirteen and Austin was five, she found him crying beneath their father’s desk. Their father had been shouting at their mother in the next room.

You promised Lydia’s people would never find out.

Emma had assumed Lydia was an employee.

Now the name struck differently.

Leila checked the time. "We have fifty-two minutes before Austin’s deadline and less than six hours before the offshore filing. We need the children, the key, and access to the testimony room."

"The children are already in the tunnel," Emma said.

An agent’s voice came through Leila’s earpiece.

The color drained from her face.

"What?" Emma demanded.

Leila removed the earpiece slowly. "The team at the greenhouse was attacked."

"Where are Noah and Sophie?"

"Missing."

Emma crossed the room and gripped Leila’s jacket. "You told me they were safe."

"I told you we were taking them to safety. I was wrong."

Mrs. Calder examined the live security feeds. Camera twelve showed movement near the archive corridor.

Two small figures stood beside Victor.

Noah held Sophie’s hand.

Austin knelt in front of them, speaking gently as if the afternoon at brunch had never happened.

"You want to meet your father, don’t you?" he asked.

Noah looked past him at Daniel.

Daniel strained against the men holding him. "Do not touch them."

Victor gestured to the glass pedestal. "We only need a handprint. Then everyone goes home."

Sophie began to cry.

Emma reached for the intercom channel, but Mrs. Calder stopped her.

"They do not know you are watching. That is our advantage."

"My children are standing in front of armed men."

"And Noah is looking at the floor."

Emma focused on the screen.

Noah’s eyes were lowered, but his lips moved.

He was counting.

Four seconds in. Four held. Four out.

The breathing exercise.

He was not frozen. He was thinking.

Sophie reached into the pocket of her yellow dress.

She pulled out something silver.

Emma touched her empty throat.

The necklace was gone.

Sophie had taken the key before leaving the storage room.

"Smart girl," Mrs. Calder whispered.

Sophie held it out.

Austin grabbed for it.

She opened her fingers.

The key fell through a narrow drainage grate in the floor.

Victor’s calm expression shattered.

Austin struck Sophie across the face.

Emma screamed.

Daniel broke free with a force that seemed impossible. He drove his shoulder into Austin, knocking him against the glass pedestal. The armed men lunged.

Noah pulled Sophie behind the document cases.

Mrs. Calder changed cameras, tracking them through the archive.

"There is a service conduit beneath the grate," she said. "The key will drop into the old water channel."

"Where does it lead?"

"The river."

On-screen, Victor raised his gun toward Daniel.

May you like

Emma did not wait for another plan.

She ran for the archive stairs.
