Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Needed Her Poor

Austin’s smile on the security screen was the same one he had worn at brunch.

It was not joy. It was relief.

For years, Emma had mistaken that expression for confidence. Now she understood it came from believing that someone else would always absorb the consequences of his choices.

Leila muted the security feed and crouched beside Noah and Sophie.

"There is a service exit behind this room," she said. "One of my agents will take you back through the tunnel."

Noah shook his head. "Grandpa has our dad."

Emma touched his cheek. "I know."

"Then we can’t leave."

"You can, because your job is not to rescue adults. Your job is to stay safe and let us do ours."

Sophie wrapped both arms around Emma’s neck. "Will you come back?"

Emma had promised too many things that depended on other people’s mercy. This time she chose her words carefully.

"I will fight with everything I have to come back."

Noah looked at her for a long moment, then took Sophie’s hand.

Before they left, he removed the cheap digital watch Daniel had given him in the storage room.

"Daddy said this was broken," he whispered. "But I think he wanted you to have it."

Emma turned the watch over. Scratched into the plastic back were three letters.

B-17.

Mrs. Calder recognized them. "Ballroom panel seventeen."

They waited until the children disappeared into the tunnel. Then Emma, Leila, Mrs. Calder, and two agents moved toward the main ballroom.

Panel seventeen stood behind the stage, disguised as decorative woodwork. Mrs. Calder pressed the center. A compartment opened, revealing a narrow drawer filled with old cassette tapes, memory cards, and one sealed envelope addressed to Emma.

Inside was a letter written recently.

Emma,

If you are reading this, Austin discovered more than I expected. You deserve the entire truth, not the version I chose because I thought protection could excuse silence.

I was alive after the river. Your father’s men pulled me from the car before it sank. They kept me in a private clinic owned by Victor Hart. For six months, I could not walk. For two years, I could not safely contact you.

After that, I could have tried harder.

I told myself I stayed away because your father watched you. The harder truth is that I was ashamed. I had failed to protect you, and each year made returning more impossible. Miriam helped me build the case. Leila helped me enter protected status. I saw photographs of Noah and Sophie. I watched from too far away.

Do not forgive me because I suffered. Judge me by what I do when I finally stand in front of you.

Austin found the trust because I made a mistake. I contacted him last year, believing he might help expose your father. He agreed, then sold the information to Victor.

He has spent his entire life needing you beneath him. Your independence proves he is not the heir he pretends to be.

The envelope also contained a memory card.

Leila inserted it into her phone.

A video opened.

Austin sat across from Daniel in a hotel room eight months earlier.

"Emma doesn’t need to know you’re alive," Austin said. "She’s finally stable. The kids are stable. You show up, you destroy them."

"I am their father."

"Biologically. That doesn’t make you useful."

Daniel leaned forward. "What do you want?"

Austin named a number.

Twenty million dollars.

In exchange, he promised to arrange a private meeting with Emma and help Daniel obtain corporate records from their father’s office.

Daniel refused.

Austin smiled. "Then I tell Victor the children control the trust."

The recording ended.

Emma lowered the phone.

Mrs. Calder looked away, giving her privacy she did not feel.

"He sold us," Emma said.

Leila nodded. "And when Victor learned the trust required descendants, he accelerated the wedding plan."

"Why use Austin at all?"

"Because Austin had access to you. To your signature. To your accounts. To the children. Victor needed the theft to look like a family dispute, not organized fraud."

Emma remembered every favor Austin had requested. Copies of school enrollment forms. A scanned birth certificate for a supposed family insurance policy. Sophie’s clinic records because he claimed their mother needed them for an ancestry project.

He had built the trap from pieces Emma handed him.

A voice boomed through the ballroom speakers.

"Emma," Austin said. "I know you’re in the building."

The chandeliers flickered on one by one.

The ballroom was empty except for a single dining table in the center.

Two small chairs stood beside it.

Noah’s and Sophie’s place cards rested on the plates.

"Bring the key to the conservatory," Austin continued. "Or Daniel loses one finger every five minutes."

Emma stepped toward the nearest camera.

"Austin," she said.

Her voice carried through the system because Mrs. Calder opened the channel.

Austin laughed. "There she is."

"You never needed twenty million dollars. You needed me to believe you were more important than I was."

Silence.

Then his voice sharpened. "Bring the key."

"You moved the chairs because you wanted my children to feel what you have always felt. Unwanted."

"Shut up."

"Dad made you his favorite because favorites are easier to control. He gave you applause instead of respect. He gave me contempt because he was afraid I could survive without him."

The speakers crackled.

"Five minutes," Austin said. "Then Daniel screams."

The channel closed.

Leila studied the building plans. "He expects us to approach the conservatory. We can use the ventilation corridor to reach the archive level."

Mrs. Calder pointed to a second route. "The testimony room is behind the vault. If Victor opens the outer door with Daniel’s biometric scan, he still needs the descendants for the inner release."

Emma touched the key at her throat.

"And the key?"

"It opens a manual override. Eleanor designed it so the trustee could seal everyone inside if the archive was attacked."

Emma understood the choice.

She could rescue Daniel by entering the archive.

May you like

Or she could seal her father, Austin, and Victor underground.

But only if she was willing to risk sealing Daniel with them.
