Chapter 9 - What Mara Knew

Meredith crossed the greenhouse so quickly she knocked over an empty planter.

“What are you doing here?”

Lily ran into her arms. “Aunt Mara said you needed me.”

Meredith looked at Mara. “I never asked you to bring her.”

“I know.”

Mara’s face was gray with fear. Rain darkened her black hair, and she held a manila envelope against her coat.

“Then why is she here?”

“Because Daniel called me.”

Samuel moved closer. “What did he say?”

“That if I didn’t bring Lily to the old house, he would send Meredith a video.”

Meredith’s grip tightened around her daughter. “What video?”

Mara began crying harder. “The night Adrian died.”

The investigators led Lily to the mansion kitchen with an officer while Meredith remained in the greenhouse.

Mara placed the envelope on a stone bench.

“I have lied to you for nine years,” she said.

Meredith felt Adrian’s letter inside her pocket.

“He told me to trust you.”

“He trusted the person I was before that night.”

Mara opened the envelope and removed a memory card.

“The gala had security cameras. I was volunteering at the registration desk. After Adrian left, Daniel asked me to copy footage from the service entrance. I thought it was for insurance.”

“What was on it?”

“Your father meeting Adrian in the parking area. They argued. Thomas took Adrian’s car keys, then gave them back. Daniel arrived with a valet.”

“Which valet?”

“I never learned his name.”

“What happened next?”

Mara looked down. “The valet opened Adrian’s hood.”

Samuel asked, “Did the video show tampering?”

“Yes.”

The greenhouse went silent except for rain against glass.

Meredith’s voice sounded distant to her own ears. “You saw evidence that his car was sabotaged.”

“I didn’t understand until the next morning. By then Adrian was missing and Thomas had called me.”

“What did he want?”

“He knew my mother’s immigration case had problems. He knew my younger brother had been arrested. He said both could be fixed if I gave him the original recording and never mentioned it.”

“You gave it to him.”

“Yes.”

“For your family.”

Mara flinched at the bitterness in the words.

“I made a copy first. I told myself I was preserving the truth. But I was afraid to use it.”

“For nine years?”

“I checked on you. I stayed close. I helped with Lily.”

“You built a life beside us while knowing Adrian may have been murdered.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Meredith stepped back as though distance could stop the betrayal from touching her.

Samuel took the memory card. “Where is the video now?”

“On that card. Daniel found out I kept it. He said if I didn’t bring Lily, he would release an edited version making Meredith look involved.”

“Involved how?”

“The footage also shows Meredith leaving the parking area shortly before Adrian.”

Meredith frowned. “I never went to the parking area.”

Mara looked at her. “Someone wearing your coat did.”

Meredith remembered the silver evening coat Thomas had given her. She had left it in the cloakroom during dinner.

“Who wore it?”

“I couldn’t see the face.”

Samuel held the card carefully. “We will have it authenticated.”

Mara reached for Meredith’s hand. Meredith moved away.

“Please,” Mara said. “I know sorry is not enough.”

“No. It isn’t.”

Lily called from the mansion door. “Mom?”

Meredith turned immediately.

Lily held something in both hands: the navy family shirt Natalie had taken from her.

“Grandma gave me this.”

Evelyn stood several feet behind her.

Meredith crossed the lawn and took the shirt.

Inside the collar, beneath the printed Vale crest, someone had stitched a tiny pocket.

A brass key rested inside.

Evelyn spoke from the doorway. “Thomas hid it there before the weekend. He ordered the shirts himself months ago.”

“Natalie said she ordered them.”

“Natalie lies when she wants credit.”

“What does the key open?”

Evelyn looked toward the west wing of the mansion.

“Your father’s private archive.”

Samuel joined them. “Why put it in Lily’s shirt?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with a sorrow Meredith could not yet trust.

“Because Thomas knew that if everything failed, Lily would be the only person no one in this family considered important enough to search.”
