Chapter 7 - Adrian Cross Did Not Die by Accident

The official story had always been simple.

Eight years and nine months earlier, Adrian Cross drove home from a Vale charity gala during a thunderstorm. His car left the road, broke through a barrier, and fell into the river. Investigators blamed speed and rain. His body was recovered two days later.

Meredith had been six weeks pregnant.

Only Adrian knew.

She had planned to tell her family after the gala. Instead, Thomas Vale found her in the hospital corridor before she could see Adrian’s body and told her that scandal would not bring him back. Adrian had been married, though separated. His wife came from another powerful family. Public knowledge of the affair and pregnancy, Thomas warned, would destroy multiple lives.

Meredith had been grieving, frightened, and still desperate to believe her father knew how to protect her.

She agreed to silence.

For years, she told herself it had been her choice.

Now Samuel’s discovery made every memory feel contaminated.

Meredith left Lily with Mara Chen, her closest friend and the only person outside the family who knew Adrian’s identity. Then she drove with Samuel to the address connected to Celeste Cross.

The house stood at the edge of a fading mill town, small and blue with white curtains and a neglected rose garden.

An elderly woman opened the door before they knocked.

Celeste was thinner than Meredith remembered, with Adrian’s gray eyes and the same habit of tilting her head when suspicious.

“You took your time,” she said.

Meredith could barely speak. “You knew I would come?”

“When the monthly payment failed this morning, I knew someone had finally opened the right account.”

Samuel glanced at Meredith.

Celeste stepped aside. “Come in.”

The living room held photographs of Adrian at every age. As a boy with a missing front tooth. As a teenager holding a trophy. As a man standing beside the sailboat in Meredith’s photograph.

On the mantel was a picture Meredith had never seen: Adrian touching her pregnant belly.

Her breath caught.

“That photograph was taken the week before he died,” Celeste said.

Meredith turned. “I didn’t know anyone was there.”

“I took it from across the garden. Adrian told me everything.”

“Then why did you never contact me?”

Celeste’s expression hardened. “Because Thomas Vale came to my home after the funeral with Daniel Crowe and a contract.”

Samuel opened his notebook.

“What contract?”

“A settlement. Six hundred thousand dollars placed in trust if I agreed never to contact Meredith or the child, never to dispute the accident finding, and never to release Adrian’s files.”

“Why did you sign?” Meredith asked.

Celeste looked toward the photographs. “Because Daniel showed me evidence that Adrian had been stealing from his employer. He said if I refused, Adrian’s name would be destroyed and I would lose the house.”

“Was the evidence real?”

“No. I learned that later.”

Meredith sat down.

Celeste continued, “Adrian was investigating Vale Development. He discovered chemicals buried beneath the riverfront site before Walter purchased it. The contamination came from a manufacturing company Thomas owned through a shell corporation in the 1990s.”

Samuel’s pen stopped.

“So Thomas was responsible for the original dumping.”

“Yes. Walter’s project would have exposed it.”

Meredith understood. Her father had not stolen Lily’s money merely to save Walter. He had used Walter’s failure to hide his own crime.

“Why was Adrian involved?” she asked.

“He worked for the environmental engineering firm that tested the soil. He copied the results when his supervisor tried to bury them.”

“Did he plan to report it?”

“He planned to give the evidence to Meredith after the gala.”

Celeste crossed to a cabinet and removed a small digital recorder sealed in plastic.

“He left this with me that afternoon. He said if anything happened, I should take it to a journalist.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because the night he died, someone broke into my house and searched every room. The recorder was hidden inside a flour tin. Two days later, Thomas arrived with the forged theft evidence.”

Meredith stared at the recorder.

“Does it still work?”

“I have never played it.”

Samuel connected it to his laptop.

Static filled the room, followed by Adrian’s voice.

“My name is Adrian Cross. The date is October seventeenth. The soil reports for Parcel Nine show benzene, lead, and chlorinated solvents at levels that require immediate disclosure. Daniel Crowe instructed the laboratory to alter the final summary. Walter Vale may not know the source, but Thomas Vale does. I have copied the original data.”

Meredith closed her eyes at the sound of him.

The recording continued.

“If I cannot deliver the files, they are stored in the one place Thomas will never search because he believes it belongs to him.”

A pause.

Then Adrian said, “Meredith will understand the phrase winter orchard.”

The recording ended.

Celeste looked at her. “Do you understand?”

Meredith did.

The winter orchard was a glass greenhouse behind the old Vale house. Adrian had proposed meeting her there the night he died. She never went because Thomas asked her to remain at the gala.

Samuel closed the laptop. “We need those files.”

A car door slammed outside.

Celeste moved to the curtain.

Her face drained of color.

A black sedan had stopped across the street.

Daniel Crowe stepped out.
