Chapter 13 - The Missing Two Hours

Memory returned in fragments.
A ballroom ceiling turning slowly above her.
Mara’s voice saying she needed air.
The silver coat sliding over someone else’s shoulders.
Thomas standing near a service door.
Evelyn pressing a cool hand against Meredith’s forehead and saying, “You are exhausted.”
Meredith had always believed grief distorted that night. Now she understood there was a gap before the grief began.
She called Evelyn and demanded a private meeting at Hale Strategic’s city office, where every corridor was recorded and every visitor logged.
Evelyn arrived alone.
Meredith placed Adrian’s phone on the table.
“Did you drug me?”
Evelyn sat very still.
“Answer.”
“Yes.”
The confession came with no defense.
“What did you give me?”
“A sedative Thomas kept for flights. He told me you were having a panic attack and needed rest.”
“I was not having a panic attack.”
“I know that now.”
“You put it in my champagne.”
“Yes.”
“Why did someone wear my coat?”
Evelyn looked toward the window. “Thomas wanted Adrian to believe you had left with another man.”
Meredith felt sick. “Who wore it?”
“Natalie.”
The room went silent.
“Natalie was twenty-four,” Evelyn continued. “Thomas promised to pay her debts if she helped. She walked through the parking area with Daniel’s assistant. Adrian saw them from a distance. Thomas hoped he would become angry and leave without meeting you.”
“But Adrian met him anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Did Natalie know about the brakes?”
“I don’t know.”
“You keep saying that as though ignorance absolves you.”
“It does not.”
Meredith stood. “Why tell me now?”
“Because Thomas is dead, Daniel is running, and every lie is already collapsing.”
“No. You tell me now because you need something.”
Evelyn’s eyes closed briefly.
“Walter has disappeared.”
Meredith stopped.
“He left the lodge before dawn,” Evelyn said. “His phone was found near the riverfront site.”
“Did you call police?”
“Yes. They believe he may have gone into the restricted construction zone.”
“Why?”
“He sent me a message. He said he was going to end what Father started.”
Meredith’s first instinct was suspicion. Walter had lied, accepted stolen money, and stood silent while Lily cried. But he was still her brother, and the riverfront site contained unstable ground, abandoned tunnels, and buried chemicals.
She called her security team and drove there with investigators.
The project had been frozen for years. Half-built towers stood beyond chain-link fencing, their concrete frames open to the sky. Warning signs marked contaminated sections.
Walter’s car sat near a service gate.
Inside, police found his wallet and wedding ring.
A trail of footprints led toward the old pumping station by the river.
Meredith followed wearing protective boots and a respirator. In the pumping station, a portable generator powered one work lamp.
Walter sat at a table surrounded by files.
He was alive.
He looked older than he had two days earlier.
“I knew you would come,” he said.
Meredith removed the respirator. “Everyone thinks you may be dead.”
“I needed time before Daniel found me.”
“What are these?”
“Original site maps. Dad hid disposal tunnels beneath the foundation. Daniel has been using them to store records and move money.”
“You knew?”
“I found the entrance last year.”
“And said nothing.”
Walter looked at the dark tunnel behind him. “I thought I could clean the site, repay the stolen funds, and make everything disappear.”
“With what money?”
He pushed a ledger toward her.
It documented payments from a network of shell companies into political campaigns, inspectors’ accounts, and foreign trusts.
At the center was Hale Strategic Holdings.
Meredith’s company.
Her name appeared on dozens of approvals.
All forged.
“Daniel has been laundering Vale money through subsidiaries your company acquired,” Walter said. “He used Samuel’s legal credentials and Dad’s old authorization codes.”
“Samuel?”
“I don’t know if Samuel helped or if Daniel framed him.”
A noise echoed from the tunnel.
Walter stood.
Daniel emerged from the darkness holding a gun.

Behind him walked Natalie.
Her hands were not tied.
