Chapter 4 - The Fall
Maya arranged help through Detective Marcus Hale, a financial crimes investigator who had previously worked with the Whitmore Foundation.
Hale insisted Elena needed medical care immediately.
Elena refused to leave without a stronger case.
“Recordings alone may not prove what they administered,” Maya warned through the emergency phone.
“I saved one of the tablets.”
“Good. We will test it.”
A maintenance worker entered the penthouse two days later to inspect the heating system.
He was actually working with Hale.
Elena slipped the hidden tablet into his equipment bag.
Laboratory results came back within forty-eight hours.
The tablet contained a powerful sedative that could cause confusion, memory loss and dangerous changes in heart rhythm when combined with Elena’s prescription.
Now they had evidence of poisoning.
But Garrett was becoming impatient.
One evening, Elena overheard him arguing with Brenda.
“The foundation board meets next month,” he said. “If she appears, the temporary authority ends.”
“Then make sure she cannot appear,” Brenda replied.
The following morning, Garrett gave Elena a glass of juice.
She pretended to drink it, pouring most of it into a plant when he looked away.
Minutes later, Garrett led her toward the marble staircase.
“You need fresh air,” he said.
Elena noticed his hand hovering near her back.
She understood.
He intended for her to fall.
Instead of resisting, Elena stumbled deliberately before they reached the top step.
She collapsed onto the carpeted landing, protecting her head with one arm.
Garrett shouted for help.
Paramedics arrived.
One of them had been alerted by Detective Hale.
At the hospital, Elena was taken through a private entrance. Garrett was told she had suffered a severe cardiac event.
Hours later, a doctor informed him that Elena had been transferred for specialized care.
The location was confidential.
Garrett pretended to be devastated.
By the following evening, news outlets reported that Elena Sullivan had experienced a life-threatening medical emergency.
Garrett released a statement requesting privacy.
Three days later, he told Brenda and Tiffany that Elena was unlikely to recover.
