Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The silver suitcase nearly toppled onto the marble floor when Garrett Sullivan released its handle.
He stood frozen beneath the crystal chandelier, his black overcoat still dusted with the cold February air. Behind him, his mother, Brenda, stopped so abruptly that Tiffany walked into her shoulder.
Across the enormous living room, Manhattan shimmered behind the floor-to-ceiling windows. The Empire State Building rose above the skyline, glowing in the pale afternoon light.
But Garrett saw none of it.
He could only stare at the woman kneeling beside an open black evidence case.
Elena Sullivan wore the champagne-gold gown she had worn at their anniversary gala the previous year. Her dark hair was arranged in a loose formal updo. Large silver earrings caught the light whenever she moved.
She looked healthy.
She looked calm.
Most terrifying of all, she looked prepared.
“You’re alive?” Garrett whispered.
Elena picked up an empty prescription bottle from the case. Around her lay sealed evidence bags, bank records, receipts, insurance papers and printed account transfers.
“You locked my medication away and left me here,” she said.
Brenda’s fingers tightened around the fur collar of her beige coat.
Tiffany glanced toward the open penthouse doors, but a tall man in a gray jacket was already standing near them.
Garrett forced a laugh.
“We came back because we were worried.”
Elena’s gaze shifted to the silver suitcase.
Then she looked at the bank documents beside her.
“You came back for the inheritance.”
Garrett’s expression hardened.
“What have you done?”
A plainclothes detective stepped from behind a cream curtain, holding a thick folder of photographs.
Garrett’s hand moved instinctively toward the suitcase.
The detective raised one palm.
“Mr. Sullivan, don’t touch it.”
A second detective closed the penthouse doors.
The click of the lock sounded louder than a gunshot.
Brenda covered her mouth.
Tiffany backed toward the wall.
Elena opened the evidence case farther, revealing a small digital recorder taped beneath the lining. Beside it were signed transfer documents bearing Garrett’s name.
“They recorded everything,” she said.
Garrett’s face lost all color.
“You planned this.”
“No,” Elena replied. “You did.”
The first detective opened his folder.
Inside were photographs of Garrett meeting a private banker in Switzerland, Brenda entering Elena’s physician’s office and Tiffany purchasing medication under a false name.
Garrett stared at the images.
For the first time in his life, he had no immediate lie.

The detective reached inside his coat.
Before he could reveal the charges, Elena looked toward the skyline and remembered the morning, seventy-four days earlier, when her husband had first tried to make her disappear.
