Chapter 8 - The First Door Opens)

“What the hell is Section Fourteen?”
Julian’s question hung in the room.
Nora held Samuel’s document.
Detective Cole kept one hand on Julian’s shoulder.
Victoria had gone pale.
Nora read the provision aloud.
“Unauthorized possession by a restricted individual shall constitute voluntary activation of the supplemental evidentiary trust.”
Julian stared.
“Restricted individual?”
Nora turned the page.
“Julian Vance. Victoria Vance.”
Victoria lunged toward her.
The officer blocked her.
“That’s fake!”
Benjamin Cross entered from the hallway.
“No, Mrs. Vance.”
Victoria froze.
Benjamin held up his identification.
“I drafted it.”
Julian looked from Benjamin to Nora.
“What evidentiary trust?”
Cole answered.
“The one that just gave my department records showing eleven point eight million dollars in suspicious transfers.”
Julian’s face changed.
Victoria recovered faster.
“I know nothing about that.”
Cole looked at her.
“VHC Holdings.”
No reaction.
“Does that name sound familiar?”
“No.”
“Interesting.”
Cole removed a photograph.
“Because your passport application lists Victoria Helen Caldwell as your birth name.”
Victoria’s eyes flicked toward Julian.
Tiny.
Instant.
But Nora saw it.
So did Cole.
Julian began struggling.
“I want a lawyer.”
“Good decision.”
Cole led him toward the door.
Victoria shouted, “Julian!”
He turned.
For one second, mother and son stared at each other.
Something passed between them.
Fear.
Warning.
Perhaps blame.
Then Julian was taken away.
Victoria remained.
“You think you won?”
Nora looked at her.
“I think your son was arrested.”
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“Neither did you.”
Victoria stepped closer until the officer stopped her.
“That old man hated Julian.”
“Grandpa understood him.”
“He poisoned you against us.”
“No.”
Nora’s voice remained calm.
“You did that yourselves.”
Victoria’s face twisted.
“You won’t keep that house.”
Nora smiled.
“I don’t think the house is your biggest problem anymore.”
Victoria left under escort.
Benjamin waited until the hallway became quiet.
Then he sat beside Nora.
“That could have gone better.”
Nora laughed despite the pain.
“Could it?”
Cole returned.
“Julian’s being booked for assault, witness intimidation, and suspected involvement in financial fraud. More charges may follow.”
“Victoria?”
“Not enough yet.”
Nora frowned.
“You heard her.”
“I heard plenty. But financial crimes require evidence.”
Benjamin tapped the trust.
“Package Two.”
Cole looked at him.
“When?”
Benjamin checked his watch.
“Activation plus twenty-four hours.”
Nora stared.
“Tomorrow.”
“Yes.”
“What’s inside?”
Benjamin shook his head.
“No idea.”
That night Nora could not sleep.
At 1:18 a.m., her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
This time the message contained a photograph.
Thomas Reed.
Alive.
Standing beside a motel door.
The photograph appeared recent.
Under it:
PACKAGE TWO IS NOT ABOUT MONEY.
Nora typed quickly.
Thomas?
Three dots appeared.
Then vanished.
Another message came.
YOUR GRANDFATHER DID NOT BUILD THE TRAP FOR JULIAN.
Nora’s heartbeat hammered.
May you like
Then:
HE BUILT IT FOR VICTORIA.
