Chapter 15 - The Fourth Package)

Thomas Reed disappeared from police protection at 6:20 the following morning.
No forced entry.
No struggle.
One guard had been drugged.
Another found unconscious in the stairwell.
Security cameras captured Thomas leaving through a service corridor beside a man wearing a hospital maintenance uniform.
Julian’s face never appeared.
At 7:03, Nora received a photograph.
Thomas sat tied to a chair.
A newspaper lay across his knees displaying that morning’s date.
Below the image was a message.
THE LEDGER FOR THOMAS.
Detective Cole immediately took Nora’s phone.
“No response.”
“He’ll kill him.”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“If Julian wanted Thomas dead, he wouldn’t need the ledger.”
Nora looked at him.
“Then what does he need Thomas for?”
Cole had no answer.
Victoria did.
When told Thomas had been taken, she went completely white.
“He found out.”
“Found out what?” Nora demanded.
Victoria looked toward Cole.
“Package Four.”
Nora stared.
“There’s another package?”
Victoria nodded.
“What’s in it?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know what Samuel called it.”
“What?”
Victoria whispered.
“The succession file.”
Benjamin Cross was summoned.
So was Evelyn Shaw.
Neither knew anything about a fourth package beyond references buried inside Section Fourteen.
Evelyn searched the trust server.
At 9:18, a previously locked directory appeared.
PACKAGE FOUR.
Status:
PENDING FINAL CONDITION.
Nora stared at the screen.
“What condition?”
Evelyn opened the metadata.
Her expression changed.
“This can’t be right.”
“What?”
“It requires three events.”
She read them.
Unauthorized occupation of the Mercer property.
Confirmed fraudulent transfer attempt.
Evidence of physical coercion against primary beneficiary.
Nora looked at her bruised arm.
“All three happened.”
“Yes.”
“Then why is it pending?”
Evelyn scrolled.
“There’s a fourth condition.”
“What?”
She turned the laptop.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT BY SUCCESSOR.
Nora frowned.
“Who is the successor?”
“No name.”
Cole looked at Thomas’s photograph.
“Maybe Thomas knows.”
That explained the kidnapping.
Julian was not merely trying to exchange Thomas for the ledger.
He wanted Thomas to open Package Four.
At 10:11, Julian called again.
Cole traced the call while Nora answered.
“You have one hour.”
“Let me hear Thomas.”
There was movement.
Then Thomas spoke.
“Nora, don’t give him anything.”
Julian struck him.
Nora heard the impact.
“Stop!”
Julian returned.
“One hour.”
“You already lost the inheritance.”
Silence.
Nora continued.
“We found the ledger.”
Julian’s breathing changed.
“You knew about the stolen transfers three years ago.”
“That proves nothing.”
“It proves you weren’t innocent.”
“My lawyers will destroy that.”
“Maybe.”
Nora looked at Cole.
“But Grandpa knew.”
Julian laughed.
“Samuel’s dead.”
“Yes.”
“And dead men don’t testify.”
Thomas suddenly shouted in the background.
“That’s why there’s Package Four!”
Silence.
Nora froze.
Julian swore.
Something crashed.
The connection ended.
Cole looked at the trace.
“Got him.”
Police moved within seconds.
An abandoned marina warehouse.
Four miles away.
Nora was ordered to remain behind.
This time she did.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she finally understood she did not have to walk into danger to prove she was strong.
Forty-three minutes later, Cole called.
Thomas was alive.
Julian was gone.
Again.
Inside the warehouse police found rope, burner phones, forged passports, cash, and architectural plans for the lake house.
But Julian had left one thing deliberately.
Samuel’s photograph.
On the back Julian had written:
HE OWED ME A LIFE.
Thomas returned under heavy protection.
His face was bruised.
His lip was split.
But he was alive.
Nora sat opposite him.
“What is Package Four?”
Thomas looked at Benjamin.
Then Evelyn.
“I was instructed never to say unless the first three packages released.”
“They have.”
Thomas nodded.
“Then Samuel’s final instruction applies.”
“What instruction?”
Thomas looked directly at Nora.
“The successor must acknowledge the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That Samuel’s estate was never intended to end with you.”
Nora frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas asked Evelyn to reopen the server.
She did.
Package Four remained locked.
Thomas approached.
He entered a code.
The screen changed.
IDENTIFY SUCCESSOR.
Thomas looked at Nora.
“Samuel told me there would come a day when you had to decide whether his family legacy deserved to continue.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You will.”
Thomas typed a name.
The screen paused.
Then accepted it.
Package Four unlocked.
Hundreds of files appeared.
At the top was a video.
SAMUEL VANCE.
FINAL STATEMENT.
Nora clicked it.
Her grandfather appeared on screen.
Older.
Thin.
Clearly ill.
But smiling.
“Nora.”
Hearing his voice broke something inside her.
“If you are watching this, then Section Fourteen worked.”
Samuel coughed.
“I wish that meant I was clever. Mostly it means people behaved exactly as I feared.”
Nora covered her mouth.
Samuel continued.
“You know about Julian now.”
She closed her eyes.
“You know he is my son.”
Samuel paused.
“But you do not yet know why that matters.”
Nora opened her eyes.
Thomas became very still.
Samuel looked directly into the camera.
“Julian was not my only child.”
Nobody moved.
Nora stared at the screen.
Samuel continued.
“There is another.”
Benjamin whispered, “Jesus.”
Victoria, watching remotely from the secure interview room, stood so abruptly her chair fell backward.
Samuel continued speaking.
“The evidence is contained in this package. So is the identity of the person who has the strongest lawful claim to the remaining Vance estate after Nora.”
Nora looked at Thomas.
“Who?”
Thomas did not answer.
On screen Samuel picked up a photograph.
Before he could show it to the camera, the video froze.
The laptop screen went black.
“What happened?” Cole demanded.
Evelyn typed rapidly.
“The server connection dropped.”
“Reconnect.”
“I’m trying.”
Thomas stared at the blank screen.
Then Nora’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Julian standing beside a black SUV.
Behind him was the lake house.
He had returned.
But Julian was not alone.
A woman stood beside him.
Approximately forty.
Blonde.
Nora had never seen her before.
The woman held the missing photograph from Samuel’s video.
Beneath the image was a message.
Nora read it.
Then read it again.
Cole stepped beside her.
“What does it say?”
Nora slowly raised her eyes toward Thomas.
Thomas looked terrified.
Nora turned the phone around.
The message contained seven words.
ASK THOMAS WHO SAMUEL’S DAUGHTER REALLY IS.
Thomas backed away.
“Thomas?”
He shook his head.
“Not here.”
Nora’s voice hardened.
“You knew.”
“Nora…”
“You knew she existed.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Before Thomas could answer, every phone in the room began ringing.
Cole’s.
Benjamin’s.
Evelyn’s.
Then Nora’s.
A police dispatcher shouted through Cole’s speaker.
“Detective, units at Mercer property report an explosion.”
Nora’s blood turned cold.
“The lake house?”
Cole grabbed his coat.
The dispatcher continued.
“Fire throughout the east wing. Possible occupants inside.”
Nora looked at the photograph Julian had sent only seconds earlier.
Julian.
The unknown woman.
Samuel’s missing photograph.
All standing outside the house that was now burning.
Then another message appeared on Nora’s phone.
This one was not from Julian.
The sender identification contained a name.
MARGARET CALDWELL.
Nora opened it.
Three sentences appeared.
JULIAN IS NOT YOUR ENEMY ANYMORE.
THE WOMAN BESIDE HIM IS.
AND IF SHE OPENS SAMUEL’S FINAL FILE BEFORE YOU DO, YOU WILL LOSE FAR MORE THAN THE HOUSE.
Nora looked up.
Outside the hospital windows, dark smoke was already beginning to rise beyond the distant line of trees toward Lake Mercer.
Detective Cole reached the door.
“Nora, stay here.”
Nora looked at Thomas.
He would not meet her eyes.
She looked at Victoria through the observation monitor.
For the first time, Victoria was pounding desperately on the glass, screaming something no microphone was transmitting.
Then Nora looked at Samuel’s frozen video.
Another child.
Another heir.
Another secret.
The lake house had never been the inheritance.
It had been the lock.
And somewhere inside the burning house, someone had just found the final key.
Nora tightened her hand around Samuel’s brass key.
Then Thomas finally spoke.
His voice was barely audible.
“There’s something Samuel never told you about your mother.”
Nora slowly turned toward him.
“What?”
Thomas’s face had gone gray.
“The woman with Julian…”
He swallowed.
“…is the reason your parents died.”
Nora stopped breathing.
May you like
Outside, sirens screamed toward Lake Mercer.
And before Thomas could say another word, the lights went out.
