Chapter 13 - The Son Who Learned Too Much)

Julian called Nora at 11:43 p.m.

She answered.

“Nora.”

His voice sounded different.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Just shock.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“Did you know?”

Nora knew immediately.

“Know what?”

“Don’t.”

His breathing trembled.

“Don’t fucking do that.”

Nora closed her eyes.

“Who told you?”

“Mom.”

Victoria was alive.

“Where is she?”

“She told me everything.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Julian laughed.

It sounded broken.

“Samuel was my father.”

Nora said nothing.

“My whole life was a lie.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re his granddaughter.”

“Yes.”

Julian went silent.

Then whispered, “Jesus Christ.”

Nora felt no sympathy.

Not yet.

Perhaps never.

“You assaulted me today.”

“I know.”

“You helped your mother take my house.”

“I know.”

“You tried to make me sign a false statement.”

“I know.”

“Learning your father’s name doesn’t erase any of that.”

Julian’s voice hardened slightly.

“You think this is about us?”

“It became about us when you put your hands on me.”

“Samuel left me nothing.”

“He specifically excluded you.”

Silence.

Nora immediately regretted saying it.

Julian whispered, “What?”

“He amended the trust.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“Why?”

Nora heard something in the background.

A door closing.

Then Victoria’s voice.

Faint.

Julian, hang up.

Nora sat straighter.

“You’re with her.”

Julian ignored the question.

“How much?”

“What?”

“How much would I have inherited?”

Nora understood.

Even now.

Money.

“Hundreds of millions.”

Julian stopped breathing.

Victoria shouted something.

Then the call disconnected.

Cole immediately began tracing it.

Nora looked at Thomas.

“You were right.”

Thomas nodded grimly.

“He knows.”

Cole received coordinates.

“Warehouse district near Mercer Marina.”

Police moved.

Nora was taken to a secure hotel with Benjamin and Evelyn.

At 1:12 a.m., Cole called.

“We found Victoria.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Julian?”

“Gone.”

“Margaret?”

“No sign.”

Nora gripped the phone.

“What happened?”

“Victoria claims Margaret kidnapped her.”

“Do you believe her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Victoria had two passports and four hundred thousand dollars in cash in the warehouse.”

Nora almost laughed.

“She was running.”

“Looks that way.”

“And Julian?”

“Security footage shows him leaving in Victoria’s SUV.”

“Alone?”

Cole paused.

“No.”

Nora’s stomach tightened.

“Who was with him?”

“A woman.”

“Margaret?”

“We think so.”

Nora looked toward the dark hotel window.

Julian had spent his entire life obeying Victoria.

Now, within hours of discovering Victoria had lied about his father, he had apparently left with Victoria’s missing sister.

Why?

The answer arrived the following morning.

Package Three.

A secure server automatically released thousands of documents.

Most concerned offshore assets.

One file concerned Samuel’s amended trust.

Benjamin read it.

Then sat down.

“Nora.”

“What?”

“There’s another condition.”

Nora hated that sentence now.

“What condition?”

“Samuel excluded Julian from inheritance.”

“I know.”

“But exclusion can be reversed.”

Nora stared.

“How?”

Benjamin looked sick.

“If Julian proves Victoria committed fraud against Samuel without Julian’s knowledge, Julian may petition for reinstatement.”

“How much?”

“Potentially half the estate.”

Nora stood as much as her injuries allowed, gripping the table.

“So Julian needs Victoria convicted.”

“Yes.”

“And Margaret has evidence against Victoria.”

“Probably.”

Nora finally understood why Julian left with her.

He was not running from the money.

He was running toward it.
