Chapter 6 - The Colonel No One Recognized
Thomas Reed first met Claire at the Harbor Point veterans’ center.
She had gone there to return a ceremonial flag that once belonged to Margaret’s older brother.
Thomas noticed her standing near the memorial wall.
“You served?” he asked.
Claire nodded.
“What branch?”
“Army.”
“Rank?”
Claire hesitated.
“Colonel.”
Thomas studied her face.
Then recognition struck him.
Eight years earlier, Thomas’s grandson had served in a medical support unit trapped during a severe overseas storm. Communications had failed. Roads were blocked. Supplies were almost gone.
Colonel Claire Blake had organized the extraction.
Thomas’s grandson came home because of her decisions.
“I’ve heard your name for years,” Thomas said.
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“I was doing my job.”
“My grandson has two daughters because you did your job.”
Thomas offered his hand.
She shook it.
Over coffee, Claire finally told him why she had returned.
Thomas listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he said, “Your father told this town you deserted your mother.”
“I know.”
“He said you were dismissed from service.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you correct him?”
Claire watched rain slide down the window.
“When people are committed to a lie, shouting the truth usually makes them defend the lie harder.”
“So what changes their minds?”
“Evidence.”
Thomas leaned back.
“You sound like a commander.”
“I am not commanding anyone now.”
“That does not make you less of one.”
Thomas asked permission to speak with several veterans who knew Claire’s service record. Claire agreed on one condition.
“No exaggerations. No stories that are not public. No turning me into a symbol.”
Thomas smiled.
“You really don’t know small towns.”
By the following day, quiet conversations began spreading through Harbor Point.
A former Army medic confirmed Claire’s rank.
A retired logistics officer remembered an award ceremony where Claire had refused to take personal credit.
A military newspaper archive showed her leading a disaster response team.
Warren responded by announcing a neighborhood meeting at the cabin.
He told everyone Claire was attempting to steal Caleb’s inheritance.
He planned to display the transfer document publicly and force Claire to leave.
Rebecca advised Claire not to attend.
“It could become hostile,” she said.
