Chapter 4 - The Coward of Harbor Point
Warren controlled Harbor Point through stories.
For years, he had told neighbors that Claire had abandoned Margaret during her illness.
He claimed Claire refused to return for the funeral.
He said she had failed in the military and remained away because she was too ashamed to come home.
By the time Claire returned, these lies had become accepted facts.
At the local grocery store, people stared at her.
At the diner, conversations stopped when she entered.
Claire did not defend herself.
Not yet.
She returned to the shed each night and organized her evidence. She recorded every conversation with Warren after informing him that future property discussions would be documented.
Warren responded by becoming more aggressive.
“You think those papers make you important?” he asked from the shed doorway.
“No.”
“You were always selfish.”
Claire continued placing records into folders.
“I paid your mortgage for fifteen years.”
“You paid because you owed us.”
“For what?”
“For raising you.”
Claire looked up.
“Did Caleb owe you the same amount?”
Warren’s jaw tightened.
“Caleb stayed.”
“Caleb lived here without paying rent while I covered the house.”
“He gave me a grandson.”
Caleb did not have children.
The lie came so naturally that Warren did not even appear embarrassed.
“You mean he might give you one,” Claire said.
“Don’t correct me in my own house.”
“It is not your house alone.”
Warren stepped closer.
“It will never be yours.”
Claire noticed his hand shaking.
He was not only angry. He was afraid.
“Why did you forge my signature?”
Warren froze.
Then he laughed.
“You’ve been overseas too long. You see enemies everywhere.”
“I have a certified copy.”
“Then take it to court.”
“I will.”
Warren’s expression changed.
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
“You would destroy this family over a building?”
Claire closed the folder.
“No. You destroyed the family. The building is simply where you left the evidence.”
Warren walked away, but not before Claire saw him reach for his phone.
That night, someone entered the shed while Claire was at dinner.
The mattress was overturned. Her boxes were opened. Her papers had been scattered.
Nothing important was stolen.
Claire had already placed the originals in Rebecca’s office.
