Chapter 5 - What Caleb Knew

Claire found Caleb sitting alone on the beach the next morning.

His engagement party confidence was gone. His expensive shoes were covered in sand.

“You took Mother’s letter,” Claire said.

Caleb stared at the water.

“Dad told me to search the shed.”

“Where is it?”

He removed the folded letter from his jacket.

Claire took it but did not leave.

“What did he tell you to find?”

“The original deed. Bank statements. Anything you could use against us.”

“Against him or against you?”

Caleb rubbed his face.

“I didn’t know he forged your signature.”

“But you knew I paid.”

“I knew you sent money.”

“You told people you paid the mortgage.”

Caleb was silent.

Claire sat on a piece of driftwood several feet away.

“Why?”

“Because Dad said the family needed people to respect us.”

“And humiliating me helped?”

“He said you didn’t care.”

“Did you ever ask me?”

Caleb looked at her.

“No.”

The answer seemed to cost him something.

He admitted Warren had controlled every message between them. When Claire sent gifts, Warren said they came from him. When she called, Warren often told Caleb she was too busy to speak.

After Margaret became ill, she secretly asked Caleb to contact Claire.

Warren stopped him.

“He said seeing you would make Mom worse,” Caleb whispered.

Claire’s hands tightened around the letter.

“And the funeral?”

Caleb looked away.

“Dad changed the date in the message.”

Claire had suspected it. Hearing the truth still felt like the ground shifting beneath her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid of him.”

“You were thirty years old.”

“I know.”

Claire stood.

Fear explained silence. It did not erase responsibility.

“Rebecca will ask whether you knew about the loan.”

Caleb’s head snapped up.

“What loan?”

Claire showed him the document.

His face drained of color.

“He told my fiancée’s family the house had no debt.”

“The loan is due next week.”

Caleb stared at the amount.

“He planned to use money from the wedding trust.”

“Then your fiancée deserves to know.”

Caleb rose quickly.

“You can’t tell her.”

“I won’t have to. The court filing will be public.”

He grabbed Claire’s arm, then immediately released it when she looked at him.

“What am I supposed to do?”

“Tell the truth.”

“He’ll hate me.”

Claire placed Margaret’s letter into her jacket.

“He taught you that his approval was more important than your integrity. Decide whether you still believe him.”
