Chapter 6 - The First Crown

The camera feed ended.
Julian turned toward Cross.
“Is she telling the truth?”
Cross walked to one of the stone pillars.
“That is never a useful question when discussing Eleanor.”
“It’s the only question that matters.”
“No. The useful question is which part of the truth she selected.”
Elena moved between them.
“Did you kill my mother?”
“No.”
“Did you cause her death?”
Cross looked toward the glowing crown.
“Yes.”
Julian stepped forward, but Elena raised a hand.
“How?”
“Sofia discovered that Eleanor had secretly acquired five of the seven crowns. With four, Eleanor could control ordinary consortium decisions. With five, she could rewrite ownership structures, remove founders, and access the reserve.”
“My grandfather’s crown?”
“Hidden after his death.”
“You said Sofia was protecting me.”
“She realized Mateo had transferred his blood authorization to his descendants. You were the only living heir.”
Elena looked at the timer.
11:36:02
“What did Eleanor want from my mother?”
“The location of Mateo’s crown.”
“And you?”
“The same thing.”
The chamber became very quiet.
Julian’s voice was cold.
“So both of you hunted her.”
“Yes.”
Elena took the black key from the table.
“What does this open?”
“Your mother’s testimony.”
“Where is it?”
Cross pointed to the glowing pillar.
Elena inserted the key into a narrow opening beneath the metal crown.
A compartment opened.
Inside rested an old digital recorder and a sealed envelope with Elena’s name written across it.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Elena’s fingers trembled for the first time that night.
She pressed play.
Static filled the chamber.
Then Sofia spoke.
“My name is Sofia Elena Marquez. I am recording this statement on December fourteenth, eleven years ago. If Elena hears it, then the succession protocol has begun.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Sofia’s voice was calm but exhausted.
“Gabriel Cross believes the consortium can still be repaired. Eleanor Vale believes it should belong to the strongest family. Both are wrong.”
Cross looked down.
“The Seven Crowns system was corrupt from the beginning. The founders collected secrets and called it protection. They manipulated markets and called it stability. They purchased judges and called it order.”
Julian looked at the network map.
Sofia continued.
“My father, Mateo, regretted what he built. Before his death, he attempted to dismantle the reserve. The other founders stopped him.”
Elena opened her eyes.
“Gabriel told me Eleanor controls five crowns. That is not true. She controls four. Gabriel controls two.”
Julian turned toward Cross.
The older man’s expression revealed nothing.
“The seventh crown belongs to the Marquez bloodline. Whoever controls it will control the consortium.”
The recording crackled.
“Elena, they will tell you that you inherited power. What you inherited is a trap.”
The message stopped.
Elena pressed play again.
Nothing happened.
“That can’t be all,” she said.
Cross indicated the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of seven people standing before the Vale mansion decades earlier.
Mateo Marquez stood at the center.
A younger Eleanor stood beside him.
Gabriel Cross stood on the far left.
Each person wore a ring marked with the crown and seven lines.
On the back, Sofia had written:
One of them was never a founder.
Elena examined the faces.
“Which one?”
“That,” Cross said, “is the first requirement.”
Julian took the photograph.
“My grandfather is here.”
Sebastian Vale stood beside Eleanor.
He had died before Julian was born.
“Elena’s grandfather founded the consortium,” Julian said. “Which person replaced an original member?”
Cross leaned against the table.
“The official story says all seven people in that photograph signed the founding agreement.”
“And the real story?”
“One founder was murdered the night before the signing.”
Elena looked at the six dark crowns.
“Someone took that person’s identity.”
“Yes.”
“Eleanor?”
“No.”
“You?”
“No.”
Julian studied the photograph again.
“Then why doesn’t the system know?”
“It does,” Cross said. “The system is waiting for Elena to discover it.”
The timer continued.
11:21:49
A warning tone sounded.
The map expanded.
Hundreds of Vale Meridian accounts turned red.
Julian’s phone began filling with notifications.
Credit suspended.
Trading halted.
Executive access revoked.
Board authority under review.
He read them in disbelief.
“My company is shutting down.”
“Not yet,” Cross said. “It is being isolated.”
“People will lose jobs.”
“If the system fully collapses, millions may lose more than jobs.”
Elena looked at him.
“You designed Protocol Seven to make it impossible to destroy the consortium without hurting innocent people.”
“I did not design it.”
“Who did?”
“Your mother.”
Before Elena could respond, another screen illuminated.
A live feed showed the mansion’s ballroom.
Guests were returning inside after the false alarm. Eleanor stood at the center of the room, speaking quietly to the chief of police.
Near the edge of the image, Thomas Kessler entered the ballroom.
He had recovered.
A thin line of blood ran from his forehead.
He handed Eleanor something taken from his pocket.
Elena zoomed in.
It was a silver ring.
A crown above seven lines.
Cross stared at it.
“That is not Kessler’s ring.”
“Whose is it?” Elena asked.
May you like
Cross looked genuinely frightened.
“The founder who was murdered.”
