Chapter 12 - The Price of Trust

The ballroom screen displayed the third requirement.

VALE BLOODLINE JUDGMENT PENDING.

ONE ELIGIBLE HEIR REMAINS.

Elena looked at Julian.

“You said he wasn’t biologically a Vale.”

Cross stared at the screen.

“We only proved he was not related to the Marquez bloodline.”

Sofia understood first.

“Adrian.”

Julian looked at the ring in Elena’s hand.

“The murdered founder?”

Sofia nodded.

“Sebastian was sterile. Eleanor needed a child carrying authentic Vale blood to secure the crown permanently.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“Who was my mother?”

Eleanor answered.

“Your mother was Adrian’s daughter.”

Silence followed.

Julian looked sick.

“You took in your murdered brother’s daughter?”

“She was fourteen when Adrian died. I raised her.”

“And then?”

Eleanor’s composure faltered.

Only slightly.

“She became pregnant at twenty.”

“With me.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“Dead.”

Julian stepped toward Eleanor.

“How?”

“She took her own life.”

“Because of you?”

“Because she was weak.”

Elena saw Julian’s hand close into a fist.

Eleanor did not step back.

“You wanted authentic Vale blood under your control,” Sofia said. “So you raised Julian as Sebastian’s grandson.”

“I raised him as my heir.”

“You raised him as a key.”

The screen displayed another message.

THIRD REQUIREMENT: DETERMINE WHETHER THE VALE CROWN WILL BE PRESERVED OR TERMINATED.

Julian looked at Elena.

“There’s the choice.”

Eleanor said, “Preserving it leaves Julian alive and restores his crown. Terminating it removes the bloodline from the consortium.”

“What happens to him?” Elena asked.

Sofia’s face became pale.

“The crown is biologically linked.”

Julian understood.

“It kills me.”

Cross nodded.

Eleanor looked at Elena.

“Now you understand power. It is not exposure. It is not speeches. It is deciding which innocent person pays for everyone else’s freedom.”

Elena turned toward the screen.

“What happens if I preserve the crown?”

The system answered.

VALE BLOODLINE RETAINS OWNERSHIP SHARE.

JULIAN VALE RECEIVES SUCCESSION AUTHORITY.

“What happens if I terminate it?”

VALE CROWN AND BIOLOGICAL AUTHORIZATION WILL BE PERMANENTLY REMOVED.

Julian said, “Do it.”

Elena turned.

“No.”

“You heard what the company has done.”

“You didn’t do it.”

“I benefited from it.”

“So did thousands of people in this room.”

“That doesn’t make me innocent.”

“It doesn’t make your death justice.”

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“Then preserve him. Give the Vale family back its crown. Give Julian access to everything.”

Julian looked at Elena.

“She thinks I’ll become her.”

“I don’t.”

“You don’t know me anymore.”

“I know you resigned when keeping your position would have protected you.”

“That was one decision.”

“It was the first honest decision you made in eleven years.”

He stepped closer.

“You cannot gamble millions of lives on the hope that I’m better than my family.”

“I’m not.”

“What?”

“I’m gambling on the fact that you’re afraid you might not be.”

The timer reached four hours.

Elena approached the black control panel on the stage.

Two options appeared.

PRESERVE.

TERMINATE.

Guests watched.

Julian’s face was calm.

Eleanor’s was unreadable.

Elena pressed neither.

Instead, she asked, “Who defined the third requirement?”

Crown Zero answered.

SOFIA MARQUEZ.

Elena looked at her mother.

“You designed this choice.”

Sofia’s voice trembled.

“I needed to ensure Eleanor could never force a transfer through Julian.”

“You created a system that would murder him.”

“I believed there would never be another eligible Vale heir.”

“But there was.”

“I did not know.”

Elena stared at the two options.

“You built the trap.”

Sofia began crying.

“Yes.”

“Then you can dismantle it.”

“I tried.”

“Try again.”

“Elena, we have less than four hours.”

“Then work quickly.”

The screen flashed.

INVALID RESPONSE.

SELECT PRESERVE OR TERMINATE.

Elena looked up.

“No.”

INVALID RESPONSE.

“You were trained on human decisions,” Elena said. “That means you expect people to accept the options you present.”

SELECT PRESERVE OR TERMINATE.

“You predict behavior by limiting choice.”

Eleanor watched closely.

Sofia whispered, “Elena, what are you doing?”

“Creating a third option.”

NO THIRD OPTION EXISTS.

“Then why are you answering me?”

The screen flickered.

Cross stepped forward.

“She’s forcing it to process a contradiction.”

Elena addressed the intelligence.

“If Julian dies, the final Vale crown is terminated. If Julian lives, the crown remains. Correct?”

CORRECT.

“If Julian voluntarily transfers his crown without death, what happens?”

VOLUNTARY TRANSFER IS PROHIBITED DURING SUCCESSION LOCK.

“Prohibited by whom?”

No answer.

“By the founders?”

FOUNDING AUTHORITY.

“How many legitimate founding authorities remain?”

The screen flickered again.

ONE.

Elena held up Adrian’s ring.

“And I possess his crown.”

The ballroom lights dimmed.

Eleanor’s confidence vanished.

Elena continued.

“The Vale crown does not belong to Julian. It belongs to Adrian. Adrian sold it before the consortium was formed, and that transfer has now been ruled illegal.”

Cross smiled.

“The crown reverts to Adrian’s estate.”

Julian understood.

“And I am his direct descendant.”

Elena looked at him.

“You are not the crown. You inherited the right to decide what happens to it.”

The screen struggled.

OWNERSHIP CONFLICT.

Elena placed Adrian’s ring in Julian’s hand.

“Renounce it.”

Eleanor moved forward.

“Julian, don’t.”

He looked at her.

For years, he had obeyed that voice before it finished speaking.

This time, he closed his fingers around the ring.

“I, Julian Adrian Vale, reject all ownership, authority, assets, privileges, and succession rights connected to the Vale crown.”

The screen went black.

Every chandelier extinguished.

Then the system responded.

VOLUNTARY RENUNCIATION ACCEPTED.

VALE CROWN DISSOLVED.

BIOLOGICAL AUTHORIZATION PRESERVED.

THIRD REQUIREMENT SATISFIED.

Julian remained alive.

For the first time that night, the ballroom erupted into genuine applause.

Elena exhaled.

A crown had been destroyed without destroying the man carrying it.

Eleanor stood alone beside the stage.

Her empire was collapsing around her.

But instead of anger, she looked relieved.

Elena saw it.

“Why are you smiling?”

May you like

Eleanor answered quietly.

“Because Crown Zero wanted you to find the third option.”
