Chapter 10 - The Heir Who Was Never a Vale

Thomas Kessler pushed Julian into the room at gunpoint.

A second guard entered behind him.

Elena had not seen Julian leave the desk, but in the confusion after the recording, he had moved toward the ballroom door and been seized.

Blood marked the corner of Julian’s mouth.

Thomas pointed his weapon at the base of Julian’s skull.

“Put Adrian’s ring on the desk.”

Elena held it tighter.

“The ring won’t authorize you.”

“I don’t need it to.”

“Then why risk everything?”

Thomas smiled.

“Because it contains a key.”

Cross leaned against the wall, pale from blood loss.

“To Crown Four.”

Thomas’s smile faded.

“You always understood too much, Gabriel.”

“Never enough.”

Elena placed the ring on the desk.

Julian looked at her.

“Don’t.”

“You’re not dying for a piece of metal.”

Thomas instructed his guard to take the ring.

As the man approached, Elena kicked the desk forward.

The edge struck his knees.

Julian drove his elbow into Thomas’s ribs.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Cross swung his cane into the second guard’s throat.

Elena grabbed the ring and ran for the ballroom door.

Thomas caught her hair and pulled her backward.

She struck him with the recorder.

He slammed her against the wall.

The scratch on her cheek split open again.

Julian tackled Thomas into the desk.

The guard recovered and aimed at Julian.

Cross fired a small weapon concealed inside his cane.

The guard collapsed.

Everyone froze.

Cross lowered the smoking cane.

“I dislike repeating myself.”

Thomas reached toward his fallen pistol.

Elena stepped on his hand.

“Who is the eighth founder?”

He looked up at her.

“You think Eleanor is the center of this story.”

“Answer me.”

“She was never the center.”

“Who was?”

Thomas smiled despite the pain.

“Your mother.”

Elena pressed harder.

“My mother was a child when the consortium began.”

“The eighth founder is not a person.”

Cross’s expression changed.

Thomas saw it.

“You never told her?”

“Told me what?” Elena demanded.

Thomas looked toward the recorder.

“Protocol Seven does not protect the seven founders. It protects the intelligence that replaced them.”

Julian frowned.

“An artificial intelligence?”

“Not the kind sold to investors today. Something older. Something trained on every secret, decision, betrayal, and death collected by the consortium.”

Cross said, “Enough.”

Thomas laughed.

“You spent decades pretending you controlled it.”

Elena looked at the black key.

“My mother designed the succession protocol.”

“She gave the system a conscience,” Thomas said. “Or tried to.”

Cross raised his weapon.

“Stop speaking.”

Elena moved between them.

“No.”

Thomas’s eyes remained on her.

“Your mother discovered the system was selecting outcomes. Elections. Mergers. Wars. It used the reserve to influence anyone who threatened its preferred future.”

“That’s impossible.”

“You activated it in the ballroom.”

“I activated an asset lock.”

“You spoke one sentence. It shut down companies across the world. Does that sound like a lock?”

The timer on Elena’s phone flashed.

08:02:10

A message appeared from the unknown sender.

THOMAS KESSLER IS PARTIALLY CORRECT.

Elena stared at it.

Another message followed.

HE IS ALSO THE MAN WHO ENTERED YOUR HOTEL ROOM.

Thomas saw the screen.

His confidence disappeared.

Elena looked at the blood on his cuff.

“You attacked me.”

“I came for the audit.”

“You cut your hand on the lamp.”

He said nothing.

“You planted evidence in your apartment afterward.”

“I needed Eleanor to believe I was still useful.”

Julian restrained Thomas while Cross took his weapon.

Elena opened the ballroom door.

Applause filled the air.

Eleanor stood onstage, announcing Julian’s suspension.

“Tonight,” she said, “our family has been betrayed by those closest to us.”

Elena walked into the ballroom.

Every head turned.

Her black dress was wet from the tunnel. Blood marked her cheek. Julian followed with Thomas. Cross remained in the shadows behind them.

Eleanor stopped speaking.

Elena climbed onto the stage.

“You’re right,” she said. “Your family was betrayed.”

Eleanor looked at the dead founder’s ring.

Elena continued.

“Thirty-two years ago, Adrian Vale was murdered. Sebastian Kessler stole his identity and his crown.”

Whispers spread through the room.

Thomas struggled against Julian.

Eleanor’s expression remained controlled.

“An entertaining story.”

Elena handed the confession tape to the sound technician.

Eleanor said, “Do not play that.”

The technician hesitated.

Julian stepped forward.

“Play it.”

For the first time, the employee chose Julian over Eleanor.

Sebastian’s confession filled the ballroom.

Guests listened as the dead man described Adrian’s murder, the stolen identity, and Eleanor’s promise.

Cameras rose.

Board members moved away from Eleanor.

When the recording ended, Julian took the microphone.

“I am submitting my immediate resignation as chief executive of Vale Meridian Holdings.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“You will do no such thing.”

“I just did.”

“You are the last Vale heir.”

Julian looked at the skeleton’s ring in Elena’s hand.

“No. I’m the heir to a stolen name.”

The words struck the room with more force than Elena’s slap would later.

Eleanor stepped away from the podium.

“You foolish boy.”

Julian removed the Vale signet ring from his finger and placed it on the stage.

“I would rather be no one than become you.”

Some guests applauded.

Others stood in shocked silence.

Eleanor looked older for the first time.

Elena almost felt sympathy.

Then Eleanor smiled.

“You think this changes anything?”

The ballroom doors locked.

Security guards surrounded the guests.

Eleanor looked directly at Elena.

“The first crown was always expendable.”

She raised her own phone.

“Bring in Sofia Marquez.”

The ballroom doors opened.

A woman entered.

Her hair was streaked with gray. A scar ran across her forehead.

Elena forgot how to breathe.

May you like

The woman looked at her and began to cry.

“My daughter.”
