Chapter 9 - The Truth Before the Court
The case lasted nearly a year.
Chris refused every reasonable agreement offered by prosecutors. He insisted that Megan invented the plan to reduce her own sentence.
At trial, his attorney portrayed him as an uninvolved husband trapped by his wife’s jealousy toward her successful brother.
Then the jury saw the kitchen footage.
They watched Megan approach the steak.
They watched Chris enter, point to the plate, and check his watch.
They read the messages about Daniel being unable to fight the board vote.
They saw the fraudulent invoices and hidden accounts.
They heard testimony from the auditor who discovered the missing funds.
Lauren testified about what she witnessed in the kitchen.
Her voice shook at first, but she did not look away from Chris.
“I hesitated because accusing a family member felt unthinkable,” she said. “Then my son leaned toward the plate. At that moment, protecting him mattered more than protecting anyone’s reputation.”
Daniel testified next.
Chris’s attorney tried to suggest that Daniel had used the criminal investigation to remove business rivals.
“Isn’t it true that you benefited when Chris and Megan were arrested?” the attorney asked.
“My family was destroyed, my son became afraid to eat food at relatives’ homes, and the company my father built was publicly connected to fraud,” Daniel replied. “I would not describe that as a benefit.”
The courtroom became silent.
Megan testified under an agreement requiring her to tell the complete truth.
She admitted approving false invoices.
She admitted obtaining the substance.
She admitted placing it onto Daniel’s steak.
She also admitted that, during the moment Ethan nearly ate it, she initially remained silent.
“I wish I could say I was protecting my son or Daniel,” she said through tears. “But I was protecting myself.”
The prosecutor placed Robert Reed’s final letter into evidence to explain the inheritance dispute Chris had used to fuel Megan’s resentment.
Megan was asked to read part of it aloud.
Her voice broke on the sentence:
Daniel did not steal your future.
For the first time, she looked directly at her brother.
Daniel did not smile.
He did not nod.
He simply listened.
The jury found Chris guilty of financial crimes, conspiracy, and offenses related to the tampered food.
Megan’s cooperation reduced her punishment, but it did not erase it. The judge imposed a substantial prison sentence followed by strict supervision and ordered restitution.
Before announcing the sentence, the judge addressed her.
“You were manipulated by someone you trusted. That explains part of your conduct. It does not excuse the moment you placed an innocent person in danger and remained silent when a child approached the plate.”
Megan lowered her head.
Chris received a much longer sentence.
As officers led him away, he turned toward Daniel.
“You think you won?”
