Chapter 6 - The Camera Above the Pantry
Detective Ruiz returned to Patricia’s house that afternoon with a warrant.
Investigators searched the kitchen, study, bathrooms, garage, and trash containers. They found the old medication cabinet open and several expired containers missing.
However, none matched the substance later detected on the steak.
The laboratory’s preliminary report arrived that evening.
The meat contained a powerful prescription sedative.
Ruiz did not describe the precise amount to the family, only that ingesting it could have caused a serious medical emergency, particularly for a child.
When Daniel heard those words, he had to sit down.
Ethan had been one forkful away from danger.
Megan was arrested the following morning.
Chris insisted he knew nothing about the substance. His attorney described Megan’s actions as an emotional mistake caused by stress.
Then investigators found the camera.
Patricia had forgotten it existed.
Months earlier, she installed a small security camera above the pantry after Cooper repeatedly opened the lower cabinet where dog treats were stored. The camera faced most of the kitchen.
Its footage had been automatically saved online.
The video showed Megan entering the kitchen alone.
She looked toward both doors, removed a small bottle from her purse, and leaned over the steak marked for Daniel.
After several seconds, she returned the bottle to her purse.
Then Chris entered.
There was no sound, but he pointed toward the steak, then toward his watch. Megan nodded.
Chris kissed her forehead before leaving.
The footage did not show what they said.
It did not need to.
Ruiz arrested Chris outside his office.
During the search of his vehicle, investigators found a folder containing the temporary board resolution, copies of Daniel’s medical insurance information, and instructions for accessing the company’s emergency leadership system.
His computer contained searches about what happened when a corporate executive became suddenly incapacitated.
Again, investigators did not reveal technical details.
The pattern was enough.
Chris had expected Daniel to become unable to lead the company.
Megan’s attorney contacted the prosecutor within twenty-four hours.
She wanted to cooperate.
Daniel agreed to hear her explanation only after Ruiz warned him that the meeting might be emotionally difficult.
They met in a secure interview room.
Megan wore a plain county uniform. Her hair was tied back, and she looked as though she had not slept.
“I never wanted Ethan to touch it,” she said immediately.
Daniel remained standing.
“You wanted me to.”
Megan began crying.
“Chris said it would only make you sick for a few days.”
“And you believed him?”
“He said we needed time before the audit.”
“To destroy evidence?”
“To fix things.”
“You stole nearly half a million dollars.”
“Chris handled the accounts.”
“You approved the invoices.”
“He told me the money would be returned.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew Dad protected your shares.”
Megan’s face changed.
“Mom told you about the letter.”
“You read it. You knew I used my inheritance to save the company.”
“Dad still chose you.”
“He gave you half of his remaining shares.”
“But he gave you control.”
“Because Chris was stealing from us.”
Megan struck the table with her palm.
“You always make everything sound so simple.”
“It became simple when you poured something onto my food.”
She looked away.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Why didn’t you stop Ethan?”
“I froze.”
“He said the steak smelled strange. Tyler reached for it. Lauren had to scream.”
“I was afraid.”
“For yourself.”
