Chapter 3 - The Plate That Changed Places

The seating arrangement became confused when one of the younger children spilled juice.

Patricia moved napkins and glasses. Tyler changed seats to sit closer to his cousins. Ethan complained that he could not see the television from his chair.

During the confusion, the plate with Daniel’s steak was placed in front of Ethan.

No one noticed immediately.

Patricia began carving the turkey while everyone passed casseroles around the table.

Daniel was answering a question about football when Cooper pushed his nose beneath Daniel’s elbow.

“Not now,” Daniel said.

The dog ignored him.

Cooper stared at Ethan’s plate and released a quiet whine.

Ethan looked down.

“Dad, why did I get steak?”

Daniel glanced toward the plate.

“You asked Grandma for a small piece.”

“But this is big.”

“It must be mine.”

Daniel reached for it, but Patricia handed him another plate.

“Take this one. It’s already here.”

Lauren looked from the steak in front of Ethan to Megan.

Megan had stopped eating.

Her fork remained suspended above her plate.

Then Ethan leaned toward the meat and frowned.

That was when he said it smelled strange.

Everything that followed happened in less than a minute.

Lauren screamed.

Tyler’s fork was stopped.

Daniel protected the dog.

The children were taken from the room.

Megan admitted she knew the steak had been intended for Daniel.

By the time the first police officer entered the house, no one was pretending Thanksgiving could be saved.

Two paramedics examined Ethan even though he had not eaten the food. They checked his hands and mouth and confirmed there was no sign he had touched or swallowed anything.

Daniel remained beside him throughout the examination.

“Am I in trouble?” Ethan asked.

“No.”

“I switched seats.”

“That helped us notice something was wrong.”

“Was the steak supposed to hurt you?”

Daniel looked toward the dining room, where officers were photographing the table.

“I don’t know yet.”

Detective Elena Ruiz arrived twenty minutes later.

She wore a dark coat and spoke in a calm voice that made even Patricia stop interrupting.

The steak and plate were sealed inside evidence containers. The serving platter, utensils, glasses, and remaining food were also collected.

Ruiz interviewed Lauren first.

Lauren described seeing Megan near the steaks and the bottle in her hand.

“Did you see the label?” Ruiz asked.

“No.”

“Did you see her pour the liquid?”

“I saw her tilt the bottle over Daniel’s steak. I couldn’t see whether anything came out, but when she walked past me, I smelled something medicinal.”

“Why didn’t you warn anyone immediately?”

Lauren’s eyes filled with guilt.

“I thought I might be wrong. I didn’t want to accuse my husband’s sister in front of the whole family.”

Ruiz nodded.

“People often hesitate when the truth is too disturbing to accept.”

Megan was questioned next.

She denied everything.

Then Ruiz asked why she had said she did not know Ethan would receive the plate.

Megan looked toward Chris.

“I was confused.”

“Confused about what?”

“I meant I didn’t know whose plate Lauren was talking about.”

Chris interrupted.

“My wife needs an attorney.”

Ruiz turned toward him.

“She has that right.”

Patricia began crying.

“This family has already lost enough.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Then tell Megan to explain what happened.”

May you like

Patricia looked away.

It was the first moment Daniel suspected his mother knew more than she was saying.
