Chapter 7 - What the Messages Revealed
The investigation lasted eleven weeks.
Ryan initially claimed that Victor had manipulated him. He admitted copying the folder but insisted he believed the information was unclassified.
Digital evidence destroyed that defense.
Investigators recovered messages in which Ryan repeatedly asked whether the files could be traced.
Victor had replied:
Not if you follow instructions. Your wife will never know.
Ryan had written:
She’s too busy pretending to save the country.
Other messages revealed that Evelyn knew more than she had admitted.
She had sent photographs of Claire’s home office to Victor. She had also encouraged Ryan to use Claire’s pregnancy as an opportunity.
Once the baby comes, she’ll be distracted for months.
Claire read the messages in her attorney’s office.
She placed the printed pages down carefully.
Her divorce attorney, Naomi Brooks, waited in silence.
“There’s more,” Naomi said.
Claire looked at her.
“Show me.”
One message had been sent while Claire was in the delivery room.
Ryan had written to Evelyn:
She keeps calling. It’s embarrassing.
Evelyn answered:
Ignore her. Women have given birth without an audience for thousands of years.
Ryan replied with a laughing symbol.
Claire stared at it.
The laughter hurt more than the stolen files.
He had known she was frightened.
He had heard her pleading for him to return.
And he had turned her fear into entertainment for his mother.
Naomi reached across the desk.
“We can stop for today.”
“No.”
“You’ve already provided enough for the custody hearing.”
“I want to see everything.”
The final message was from Ryan to Victor.
Once the contract is signed, Claire won’t be able to leave me. I’ll control the money.
Claire sat back.
The marriage she thought she was losing had never existed in the form she believed.
Ryan had not made one terrible mistake.
He had built a private version of their relationship in which Claire’s success belonged to him, her boundaries were insults and her loyalty could be converted into money.
“What happens at the custody hearing?” Claire asked.
“Ryan will request visitation.”
“Will he receive it?”
“Possibly supervised visitation, depending on the security assessment and criminal charges.”
Claire looked through the office window.
“I don’t want Emma to grow up believing her father never wanted her.”
Naomi’s voice softened.
“You are not responsible for protecting Ryan from the truth of his choices.”
“I know.”
“But?”
“But one day Emma will ask why he wasn’t at her birth.”
Naomi waited.
Claire placed a hand over her heart.
“I’ll tell her that she arrived surrounded by people who protected her. I’ll tell her I was there. Maya was there. Dr. Patel was there. General Hale crossed the country to be there.”
“That’s the truth.”
“Yes.”
Ryan sent Claire seven letters from his attorney’s office.
The first blamed Victor.
The second blamed Evelyn.
The third blamed financial pressure.
The fourth claimed Claire had cared more about the Army than their marriage.
Claire did not answer any of them.
The seventh letter was different.
I left because I thought you would forgive me. You always fixed everything. I believed I could hurt you and still come home.
Claire read that sentence three times.
It was the closest Ryan had come to honesty.
She placed the letter inside the case file.
