Chapter 6 - The Folder

Ryan entered first.

Evelyn followed, complaining about the government vehicles blocking the driveway.

Then both of them saw Claire.

The color drained from Ryan’s face.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

His eyes moved from Claire’s uniform to the newborn in her arms.

“You had the baby?”

Claire’s expression did not change.

“Two nights ago.”

Ryan looked down at Emma.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Maya, standing near the hallway, stared at him in disbelief.

Claire answered calmly.

“I called you nineteen times.”

“I was busy.”

“You switched off your phone.”

“My mother’s celebration was important.”

“And our daughter’s birth was not?”

“That isn’t what I said.”

“It’s what you showed me.”

Evelyn took a step forward.

“You could have sent Ryan a message after the birth. Keeping his child from him is cruel.”

Claire’s fingers tightened slightly around the blanket.

“I sent him three messages.”

Ryan looked at his phone as though expecting the evidence to disappear.

Evelyn turned toward General Hale.

“And who are you?”

“Brigadier General Marcus Hale.”

Evelyn’s eyes moved back to Claire’s uniform.

“Ryan told me she worked behind a desk.”

Hale’s voice was controlled.

“Colonel Bennett commands a national cyber-defense task force.”

Ryan stared at Claire.

“Colonel?”

Claire said nothing.

“You never told me you were in command.”

“I invited you to my promotion ceremony.”

“You said it was a formal work event.”

“You attended. You left before my name was announced because your mother wanted help choosing furniture.”

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“That has nothing to do with why armed people are standing inside my son’s home.”

No weapons were visible, but her accusation made several investigators straighten.

General Hale handed Ryan the sealed folder.

“This is formal notification of a federal investigation. It also contains a protective order temporarily restricting your access to Colonel Bennett, the child and this property while the security threat is evaluated.”

Ryan opened the folder.

His eyes moved rapidly across the pages.

“This is ridiculous. I accessed one folder.”

Evelyn gasped.

Ryan realized his mistake.

Claire looked at him.

“So you admit you accessed it.”

“No. I mean, if someone accessed something, it doesn’t make them a criminal.”

“The folder was inside a controlled decoy system,” Hale said. “Its purpose was to identify unauthorized activity.”

Ryan’s mouth opened.

Claire continued.

“The files were false.”

The room became silent.

“What?” Evelyn whispered.

“The schedule you gave Victor Voss was designed to be traced.”

Ryan grabbed the back of a chair.

“You set me up.”

“I activated the protocol after someone entered my secured account while I was in labor.”

“You suspected me?”

“I hoped it wasn’t you.”

For the first time, emotion entered Claire’s voice.

“I sat in a hospital room defending you in my own mind. I told General Hale your computer might have been compromised. I told myself you were selfish, but not disloyal.”

Ryan stepped toward her.

“Claire, listen to me. My company was failing. Victor said he only needed harmless information.”

“You installed a camera outside my secured office.”

“That was Victor’s idea.”

“You photographed my identification.”

“My mother said—”

Evelyn turned sharply.

“Do not involve me.”

Ryan stared at her.

“You introduced me to him.”

“I introduced you to an investor. I did not tell you to commit a crime.”

“You took two hundred thousand dollars.”

Evelyn’s face went still.

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

Even in collapse, Ryan and Evelyn were trying to sacrifice each other.

An investigator entered from upstairs with the black data drive sealed inside an evidence bag.

“We found this beneath the home office drawer.”

Ryan’s shoulders dropped.

The fight left his expression.

Claire looked at the man she had married.

She remembered his hand resting over hers during their wedding vows. She remembered painting the nursery together and the night he promised their daughter would never doubt that she was loved.

“How could you do this?” she asked.

Ryan’s voice became quiet.

“I was tired of being the least important person in this marriage.”

Claire looked down at Emma.

“You were never the least important person.”

“Then why did everyone respect you more?”

“Because respect is earned, Ryan. It is not stolen from someone else.”

The investigators instructed him to leave the property.

As he reached the doorway, Ryan looked back at the baby.

“Can I hold her once?”

Claire studied his face.

Part of her wanted to say yes.

But the protective order existed because investigators did not yet know how far the conspiracy reached.

“No,” she said. “Not today.”

Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.

Claire felt no victory.

Only grief.

He stepped outside.

Evelyn tried to follow, but an investigator blocked her.

“Mrs. Bennett, we need to ask you about the payment from Voss Strategic Holdings.”

Evelyn looked toward her son.

Ryan did not turn around.

May you like

For the first time in his life, he left his mother to face the consequences alone.
