Chapter 1 - The Call He Chose

Forty-eight hours earlier, Claire woke just after five in the morning with a deep pressure across her lower back.
She remained still for several seconds, listening to Ryan breathe beside her.
Their bedroom was dark except for the pale light coming through the curtains. On the nightstand sat a glass of water, Claire’s military-issued phone and the small wooden music box Ryan had bought when they learned they were having a daughter.
The pressure faded.
Claire exhaled.
Her due date was still nine days away, but her doctor had warned her not to ignore unusual symptoms. The pregnancy had been carefully monitored because of complications discovered during the second trimester.
She turned toward Ryan.
“Ryan.”
He groaned without opening his eyes.
“I think something’s happening.”
“What time is it?”
“Five twelve.”
Ryan pulled the blanket over his shoulder.
“You had contractions last week.”
“These feel different.”
He finally looked at her. “Did your water break?”
“No.”
“Then it’s probably another false alarm.”
Claire sat up slowly.
She had commanded emergency response teams during cyberattacks. She had briefed generals, senators and agency directors without allowing fear to enter her voice.
But that morning, she wanted only for her husband to take her hand and tell her she was not alone.
Another wave of pressure came.
Claire closed her eyes.
Ryan’s phone began ringing.
The name on the screen was Evelyn.
He answered immediately.
“Happy birthday, Mom.”
Claire looked at him.
Evelyn’s voice was loud enough to hear from the other side of the bed.
“You haven’t forgotten breakfast, have you? The florist is arriving at eight, and Victor’s flying in early.”
Ryan glanced at Claire.
“We might have a situation here.”
“A situation?”
“Claire thinks she’s in labor.”
There was a pause.
Then Evelyn laughed.
“She has been saying that for days. Tell her not to create another emergency today. I have planned this birthday for six months.”
Claire stared at the floor.
Ryan lowered his voice. “I’ll handle it.”
He ended the call and climbed out of bed.
“Handle it?” Claire repeated.
“I’ll drive you to the hospital. Once they confirm everything is fine, I’ll go to Mom’s.”
“And when they confirm it isn’t fine?”
Ryan opened the closet and removed his dark suit.
“Then you call me.”
Claire watched him dress.
“Ryan, I need you there.”
“You’ll have doctors and nurses.”
“I need my husband.”
He adjusted his tie in the mirror.
“And my mother needs me today. She’s turning sixty-five. Victor Voss is coming to discuss the Northstar contract, and this meeting could change everything for my company.”
Claire knew Victor Voss only by reputation. He was an investor whose consulting businesses competed for government technology contracts.
She had told Ryan months earlier not to discuss her work around him.
Ryan had called her paranoid.
Another contraction tightened across Claire’s abdomen.
This time she had to grip the edge of the bed.
Ryan noticed.
For one second, concern crossed his face.
Then his phone rang again.
Evelyn.
He rejected the call and picked up Claire’s hospital bag.
“Come on,” he said. “Let’s get this checked.”
At the hospital, the nurses moved Claire into an examination room. Her contractions were becoming more regular, and the monitor showed signs that concerned the obstetrician.
Dr. Patel entered twenty minutes later.
“You’re in early labor,” she said. “Because of your previous complications, we’re admitting you.”
Claire looked at Ryan.
He was already checking his watch.
Dr. Patel continued. “Your husband should stay close. Things could progress quickly.”
Ryan forced a smile.
“Of course.”
The doctor left.
Claire reached for his hand.
Ryan’s phone vibrated.
He read the message, and his expression changed.
“What is it?” Claire asked.
“Mom says Victor will only be there until tonight.”
“Ryan.”
“I’ll go for two hours.”
“No.”
“I’ll keep my phone on.”
“You heard the doctor.”
“And she said you’re being monitored.”
Claire searched his face.
“This is your daughter.”
“I know that.”
“Then stay.”
His jaw tightened.
“Not everything can stop because you’re having a baby, Claire.”
The words seemed to surprise even him.
But he did not take them back.
He picked up his coat and walked toward the door.
Claire’s voice followed him.
“If you leave now, something between us will change forever.”
Ryan paused.
For a moment, she believed he would turn around.
Instead, he said, “You’re being dramatic.”
May you like
Then he left.
