Chapter 9 - Audrey's Betrayal
Audrey did not deny taking the file.
She sat in an interview room at the federal building while Clara watched through one-way glass. Cross asked the same question three times: Why remove evidence from an active crime scene?
Audrey answered only when Clara entered.
"Because H-Survivor is my son," she said.
At twenty-one, Audrey became pregnant during medical school. The father left before the birth. Her son, Ethan, appeared healthy until a rare mitochondrial disorder caused seizures and organ failure. Martin Vale approached Audrey at the hospital and offered an experimental treatment based on Adrian's research. Desperate, she agreed.
Ethan survived.
Martin then claimed ownership over every aspect of the treatment. He falsified Ethan's death, relocated the child, and forced Audrey into silence. For sixteen years, she received occasional photographs proving Ethan was alive. The messages ended when Clara's fertility treatment began.
"H-Survivor is not an embryo destination," Audrey said. "It is a designation for a living subject."
The missing file contained Ethan's current location and the details of the treatment that saved him. Audrey feared federal seizure would place him in immediate danger. She took the file intending to find him first.
Clara felt betrayed, but she also recognized the structure of Martin's power. He did not recruit loyalty. He manufactured cages from the people his victims loved.
The file showed Ethan had been placed in a private boarding program under the name Evan Hart. He was now seventeen and enrolled at an academy funded by the Mercer Foundation.
Cross organized protection before making contact.
Ethan was found alive in a school infirmary, intelligent, physically strong, and completely unaware of his true identity. He believed Audrey was dead. His medical care included monthly injections shipped from Mercer Biologics. Without them, Martin warned, his organs would fail.
Independent doctors discovered the injections were not life-saving medicine. They were suppressants designed to create dependence and symptoms if stopped suddenly. Ethan could be weaned safely under supervision.
Audrey saw her son through observation glass before he agreed to meet her. She pressed both hands to the window and sobbed without sound.
Clara turned away to give her privacy.
Later, Ethan described a man who visited the academy every year on his birthday. The visitor never gave his name but asked questions about memory, loyalty, and whether Ethan dreamed of fire. Ethan identified Martin from a photograph.
He also recognized Julian.
Julian had visited the academy six months earlier with Evelyn Mercer. They watched Ethan complete a neurological assessment and discussed whether "the older model" was stable enough to enter the vault.
Julian had lied when he claimed ignorance.
He may not have known he was infertile, and he may not have understood Noah's creation, but he knew the Mercer trust depended on human subjects connected to AV-19.
Cross confronted Julian with the academy records. Julian's attorneys negotiated immunity discussions, but Clara insisted on being present for no part of them. She had spent too long measuring her life against his excuses.
Then Julian requested a private meeting with her.
Against Cross's advice, she agreed under surveillance.
Julian appeared smaller without cameras or family counsel. He admitted Evelyn introduced him to Ethan as a potential medical heir. She said the boy carried Mercer blood through Ruth and could unlock the repository if Julian legally adopted him. Julian refused because an adopted teenager would not generate public sympathy. When Sienna announced the pregnancy plan, he chose the infant instead.
"I did not know they used you," he said.
"You knew they used someone."
"I thought it was donor material."
"You did not ask because the answer might cost you the company."
Julian lowered his eyes.
He offered the location where Evelyn had taken the Mercer vault codes: an abandoned family estate outside Briar Glen. In exchange, he wanted Clara to tell prosecutors he had cooperated voluntarily.
"No," Clara said.
"Then Noah may die."
Clara stopped at the door.
Julian looked up. "The vault does not only contain research. It contains the stabilizing treatment for every child created through AV-19. Martin designed a genetic timer. Noah will need the first dose before he is eight weeks old."

Noah was seven weeks and four days old.
Ethan's first conversation with Audrey lasted eleven minutes. He did not call her mother. He asked factual questions: her age when he was born, the color of the hospital room, whether she had held him after the seizures began. Audrey answered each one. Only when Ethan asked why she stopped looking did her composure fail. She told him she never stopped, but she allowed Martin to define what searching was possible. Ethan said that from a child's side, the difference between impossible and abandoned could feel very small. Audrey accepted that too. Later, Clara found her in the hallway and sat beside her without speaking. Both women understood that recovering a stolen relationship did not restore the years. It merely created a place where honesty could begin.
