Chapter 7 - The Baby With Four Parents
The full genomic report forced Audrey to read every page twice.
Noah's DNA contained a conventional nuclear contribution from two people, but the identifiers did not match Julian or Sienna. His mitochondrial line matched Clara's family with near certainty. Additional synthetic markers indicated that embryonic repair had incorporated a reference sequence connected to AV-19.
In ordinary language, Noah had been created from stolen reproductive material, donor components, and a patented repair method derived from Adrian's work.
Clara was not Noah's mother in the traditional legal sense, yet a portion of her biological material had been used without consent. The child carried her maternal line. Whoever created him intended him to unlock the Mercer repository.
The nuclear parents remained unknown.
Julian refused to believe the result. He accused the government laboratories of corruption and demanded private retesting through Vale-controlled facilities. Sienna stopped appearing in public. Evelyn convened an emergency meeting of the Mercer trust.
Clara did something none of them expected.
She petitioned the family court for appointment of an independent guardian for Noah.
Her filing did not seek custody. It argued that the child had been subjected to identity fraud, unauthorized genetic manipulation, and possible medical risk. The petition included enough sealed evidence to persuade Judge Miriam Cole to order a confidential hearing.
Julian arrived furious.
"She is trying to steal my son," he told the judge.
Clara looked at Noah sleeping in the guardian's arms. "I am trying to make sure no one else uses him."
The judge ordered temporary medical oversight and prohibited removal of the child from the jurisdiction. Julian and Sienna retained physical custody under supervision. All genetic testing had to occur through court-approved laboratories.
Outside the courtroom, Julian cornered Clara near the elevators.
"You planned this," he said. "You could not have a child, so you decided to destroy mine."
Clara held his gaze. "You still think this is about whether I can give you something."
"It always was."
"That is why you never noticed what they took from you."
She handed him a copy of his own suppressed fertility report.
The report had been recovered from the hospital server. Julian's sample had not been compromised. It showed complete infertility caused by a rare chromosomal deletion. Someone deleted the result and replaced it with a transport-error notice.
Julian read the document in silence.
For years, he had blamed Clara for a condition that belonged to him. The truth did not make him gentler. It made him dangerous.
He found Sienna in the courthouse parking garage and demanded to know whether she had known. Clara and Cross watched from a distance while the argument escalated.
Sienna admitted that Martin told her Julian could never father a child. He promised the pregnancy would be medically convincing and that Noah would secure the trust. She claimed she believed a donor embryo had been used with legal consent.
"Whose embryo?" Julian shouted.
"I do not know."
"You carried him."
Sienna's face twisted. "No, Julian. I did not."
The words stopped him.
She confessed that she had never been pregnant. Martin arranged hormone treatments, prosthetics, falsified scans, and a private delivery suite. The newborn was brought to her after a surrogate gave birth at an undisclosed location.
The public pregnancy had been theater.
The argument was captured by courthouse cameras and secured by Cross before Mercer attorneys could intervene.
That night, Sienna disappeared with Noah despite the travel restriction.
Her car was found near a private airfield. In the back seat lay the blue bracelet stamped AV-19 and a note written in her hand.

Priya refused invitations from the Mercer family, rejected private security chosen by Julian, and moved all records to a court-controlled system. During the first examination, she noticed tiny puncture scars beneath Noah's heel inconsistent with routine newborn screening. The marks suggested repeated collection beginning before his public birth date. Noah had been monitored as a laboratory subject while Sienna rehearsed motherhood for cameras. Priya documented every scar and told Clara that the child's future case would require adults to distinguish genetic interest from parental entitlement. Clara replied that she had learned the difference at great cost. Priya said that might be the only reason the court could trust her.
