Chapter 8 - The Woman Beneath the Hospital
Saint Arden had been renovated so many times that its current blueprints contradicted one another. The oldest plans showed a sub-basement below the pathology wing, sealed after flood damage. Newer plans erased it completely.
Audrey remembered an elevator key marked B2 that administrators used during equipment failures. Cross obtained a warrant, but by the time federal agents reached the service corridor, the elevator controls had been removed.
Clara found the alternate entrance through a memory.
During her fertility treatment, a technician once led her through a storage room after the main corridor closed. She recalled cold air blowing from behind shelves and a painted number 314 near the floor.
Behind the shelving unit, agents discovered a steel door opened by Audrey's old key.
The stairwell descended beneath the hospital into a preserved clinic that did not exist on any active license. Examination rooms contained outdated equipment beside modern genetic sequencers. Cabinets held patient files identified by codes instead of names. A nursery contained six empty bassinets.
In the last room, they found a woman chained to a medical bed.
Her name was Lena Ortiz. She was thirty-two, a former nurse recruited by Larkspur for a high-paying surrogate program. She consented to carry a donor embryo but withdrew after learning the records were false. Martin threatened her family and kept her under medical control throughout the pregnancy.
She gave birth to Noah.
Sienna visited twice, both times accompanied by Martin. Julian never saw Lena. After the birth, Lena was moved beneath Saint Arden because Martin needed her testimony contained until the vault opened.
"Sienna came yesterday," Lena whispered. "She had the baby. She said she was taking him somewhere safe."
"Where?" Clara asked.
Lena looked toward Audrey. "To the woman who started the project."
Ruth Mercer was alive.
She had spent nineteen years in a private neurological facility owned through Vale foundations. Official records listed her under a false name and described her as nonverbal after a stroke. Lena said Ruth was alert and had secretly communicated through written notes. She believed Martin used her child, Adrian Mercer Vance, as the source for AV-19 after telling her the baby died.
The original child might also be alive.
In the hidden clinic, agents recovered cryogenic storage manifests, surgical logs, and payment records. One cabinet contained Clara's missing fertility file. The notes confirmed that viable cells had been taken during her procedure and transferred without consent. Martin selected her because Helen Hale's mitochondrial line stabilized the AV-19 repair sequence.
The records also contained proof that Clara was capable of conception.
Her so-called failed cycle had produced three viable embryos.
One became part of Noah's genetic construction.
The other two were listed as relocated.
Clara gripped the edge of the cabinet. "Relocated where?"
Audrey searched the manifest. Each entry ended with a destination code. One was marked M-Vault. The second was marked H-Survivor.
Before they could interpret the codes, the sub-basement lights went out.
Emergency lamps flashed red. A mechanical lock sealed the stairwell. Smoke entered through the ventilation system, echoing the method used in the original Larkspur fire.
Cross ordered everyone to the floor. Agents forced open a maintenance shaft and evacuated Lena first. Clara stayed beside Audrey while heat built in the corridor.
On the wall near the cryogenic room, a monitor flickered to life.
Martin Vale appeared on the screen.
"You always did inherit your mother's persistence," he told Clara. "Unfortunately, you also inherited her inability to understand sacrifice."
"Where is Noah?"
"Safe, for the moment."
"Where are my other embryos?"
Martin smiled. "One is waiting beneath the Mercer campus. The other learned to walk a long time ago."
The screen went dark.
Agents broke through the door minutes before the fire reached the storage room. Most records survived because Cross had already transferred them into evidence cases.
But one file disappeared during the evacuation.
H-Survivor.
Security footage showed the person who took it.

Lena's rescue transformed the investigation because she remembered voices, schedules, and the songs played during procedures. Martin believed music disrupted memory formation, so the hidden clinic used the same classical recording whenever patients were sedated. Cross matched the recording to audio captured during the old Larkspur fire investigation. A faint announcement beneath the music named a secure evacuation route, proving the fire had been planned rather than accidental. Lena also remembered Sienna sitting beside her after the birth, crying while holding Noah. For one minute, Sienna seemed ready to free them both. Then Martin entered, and she handed the baby back. Clara realized Sienna had possessed a choice, however dangerous, and had chosen comfort until fear finally threatened her personally.
