Chapter 8 - The Cabin at Blackwater Lake

Daniel reached the cabin shortly before sunset.
He parked the sedan behind the building and entered through a side door.
Inside, he found clothing, cash, a prepaid phone, and a passport under another man’s name. Paul had delivered the escape package two days earlier.
Daniel filled a bag.
His plan had changed, but he still believed he could recover.
Eric might remain silent in exchange for legal support. Rachel had no access to Daniel’s hidden accounts. If he crossed into Canada before midnight, he could reach an international flight by morning.
Then the prepaid phone rang.
Only one person had the number.
Daniel answered.
Paul spoke without greeting.
“You were followed.”
Daniel moved to the window.
The road appeared empty.
“By whom?”
“I gave the police your location.”
Daniel’s face went cold.
“You’ll destroy yourself too.”
“I told them what I did. I’m cooperating.”
“You moved money for me.”
“I moved money. I didn’t agree to kill a woman and child.”
Daniel ended the call and grabbed the bag.
Outside, a branch cracked.
He stopped.
A voice came from the darkness.
“Daniel Carter, come outside with your hands visible.”
Detective Hale.
Daniel looked toward the rear door.
Another voice called from that direction.
The cabin was surrounded.
Daniel searched for an escape route. The lake lay behind the property, but the water was deep and cold. The road was blocked.
He considered hiding in the attic, then rejected it.
He was not a frightened criminal, he told himself.
He was an executive.
A husband.
A father.
He could explain.
Daniel opened the front door and raised his hands.
“You’re making a mistake,” he said.
Marcus stood near an unmarked vehicle with two uniformed officers.
“Walk toward us.”
“My wife has been unstable for months. She misunderstood a security repair and frightened our daughter.”
“Keep walking.”
“She probably showed you private messages without context.”
Marcus waited until Daniel reached the bottom step.
Then he placed him under arrest.
Daniel did not resist until an officer reached for the bag.
“That contains legal documents.”
The officer opened it.
Inside were twenty thousand dollars, three phones, false identification, and one-way travel information.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Going somewhere?”
Daniel’s expression shifted.
The confident mask disappeared.
“Rachel put you up to this.”
Marcus secured the handcuffs.
“Rachel is alive because your daughter heard you.”
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
Not sorry.
Afraid.
“What did Lily hear?”
“Enough.”
Daniel lowered his head as officers placed him in the vehicle.
At the protected hotel, Rachel received the call shortly after midnight.
“He’s in custody,” Marcus said.
Rachel sat on the edge of the bed while Lily slept beside her.
“Did he confess?”
“No. He’s blaming everyone else.”
“That sounds like Daniel.”
“We recovered financial records from the cabin. The prosecutor believes the evidence supports attempted murder, conspiracy, insurance fraud, forgery, and several financial charges.”
Rachel looked at her sleeping daughter.
“What happens to us now?”
“You remain protected until the court determines whether he can be released.”
“Could they release him?”
“The prosecution will oppose bail.”
Rachel understood that Marcus could not promise absolute safety.
But for the first time that day, she felt she could breathe.
She reached over and adjusted Lily’s blanket.
Her daughter opened her eyes.
“Did they find Daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Can he hurt us?”
Rachel took Lily’s hand.
“No,” she said. “Not anymore.”

This time, she believed it.
